Katie Meyer’s Family Plans to “Push for Change” After Her Suicide

Watch: Stanford football star Katie Meyer’s parents speak out after suicide

Gina and Steve Meyer, parents of the late Stanford soccer star Katie Meyer, want to do whatever it takes to stop other students from taking their own lives.

On May 31, the Meyers and the parents of Arlana Miller, Morgan Rodgers and Tyler Hilinski — also gym students who died by suicide — appeared on Today to commemorate their children and deliver an important message on how to seek help.

“The easy thing would be to stay home and cry all day,” Steve said, referring to why speaking out on the NBC show is important to her. “It’s the easy way. We have to stand up and try to help where we can.”

On March 1, Katie committed suicide at her residence on campus in Stanford. Her parents believe she was “triggered” by an email she received about being punished by the university before her death for “defending a teammate on campus about an incident.”

Family, friends honor soccer star Katie Meyer at memorial

As a goalie, Katie Meyer threw her body in more than a thousand intrepid leaps to make game-winning saves. She helped lead Stanford University to a 2019 NCAA championship with multiple blocks in the late game, but before that she made numerous saves at Newbury Park High School in Ventura County.

On Saturday, in the last light of day, several hundred people gathered on the football field to commemorate Meyer, who died earlier in the month. she was 22

“She was just the life of the party, but in a good way,” Eileen Belanger, Meyer’s advisory teacher at Century Academy, said outside the memorial. Belanger’s voice cracked as she remembered writing a graduation speech about Meyer.

“I could have talked about Katie for hours,” Belanger said. “She was just so hard to sum up in one speech.”

Meyer’s booming voice and powerful kick on the field caught the eye of Pepperdine University head coach Tim Ward the moment he first saw her. He recalled the summer of 2020 coaching an impromptu girls’ soccer league at a local park alongside Meyer. Ward said she was committed to being a mentor to all girls. There were times when the girls tried to shoot them down by firing multiple salvos at them at once and they took so much pleasure in their presence.

“It was absolutely beautiful,” Ward said to the crowd at the memorial.

Meyer was found dead in her dormitory on March 1. Her parents, Gina and Steve Meyer, told NBC’s Today that their daughter committed suicide. They said they believe Katie may have received an email from Stanford University regarding a disciplinary action. Stanford University could not share information about “confidential student disciplinary matters,” a spokesman said in an emailed statement. In the weeks after Meyer’s death, Stanford promised to offer additional psychiatric services to students.

Katie Meyer was a bundle of energy, many said at the service, who was passionate about football but also taught young athletes the types of obstacles they could overcome. This passion was contagious to everyone who watched her play or was in her orbit.

Like most Generation Z students, Meyer shared her life on social media. Meyer has posted TikTok videos of herself in her Stanford dorm room getting ready to go out, sometimes putting on makeup and choosing her outfit. She shared videos from a hospital bed as she had knee surgery and her own recovery at the gym. Sharing her love of Lego bricks and Star Wars, she was a role model for younger athletes.

Thirteen-year-old Grace Ae stood in front of the memorial with her parents, Laura and Vince. Grace, who is also a goalkeeper, called Meyer a true inspiration.

“She’s just an incredible role model and a huge motivator,” Grace said.

Steve Meyer, Katie’s father, said his family felt “emotionally flushed” and that the support they’re receiving from friends and the community has been a huge help. She always had a bright smile, he said, and always asked her father to take her on wagon rides and collect flowers.

He recalled playing soccer with an 8-year-old Katie in the backyard and kicking the ball too hard and knocking her down. “Oh no,” said Steve Meyer. But then she got up and asked him, “Is that all you have?”

Over Christmas, Katie Meyer played with her younger sister, Siena, at a football game at Newbury Park High School. “It was beautiful,” said Steve Meyer.

He read her one of his last text messages after visiting her at Stanford: “I had the best time seeing you. And just being with you I hope you have a nice day. I love you dad.”

He added, “I am blessed to be her father.”

Gina Meyer, Katie’s mother, said: “She came into this world with a lot of energy.”

She recalled stroking her daughter’s hair as a child and then traveling together when Katie was older.

“It was pure mother-daughter love and joy,” said Gina Meyer. Looking out at the crowd at her daughter’s memorial, she said, “She would be absolutely in awe if she were to look at this.”

Her friends and family spoke in front of a large picture of Meyer and a No. 19 jersey she wore at Stanford.

Stanford University head coach Paul Ratcliffe said Meyer inspired the college community, leading “Go Stanford” chants at various sports games.

“Katie, thank you for bringing so much joy into our lives,” Ratcliffe said, his voice cracking.

Her former youth soccer league Camarillo Eagles teammates, ages 11–17, remember Meyer as a force of nature.

“She was so passionate about the sport,” said Sadie Lutz.

“She pushed everyone,” Carissa Dykes said.

“Everyone was so happy when she came to practice,” said Avery Smithson.

Newbury Park High School athletic director Jason Klein said, “She was an electrifying player and if something big had to happen, she was the one who would make it happen.”

Jonathan Deemer, who dated her at Stanford, called her a brilliant athlete with an attractive personality who “had a future as bright as the surface of the sun.”

“It’s not about what she did, it’s about who she was,” Deemer said. “Even in death, even in the worst circumstances imaginable, she cannot help but inspire us.”

Stanford teammate Naomi Girma said in February 2021 Katie Meyer tried to sneak into a physical therapy session to watch her run after recovering from a sports injury. However, due to COVID-19 restrictions, Meyer was unable to see Girma in person. Meyer watched the therapy session through a window with the biggest smile.

“Outside the facility, she ran up to me, gave me the biggest hug and proudly showed me her badge,” Girma said, noting that Meyer had written “Naomi’s best friend” on the back of her student badge.

Samantha Meyer, Katie’s older sister, recently dreamed of her sister dancing on a soccer field.

Samantha said, “I truly believe that Kat gave me a mission to get to know her and to help others heal and find peace.”

Meyer was only a few months away from graduating from Stanford. Friends and teammates said she has been heartbroken during the pandemic at not being able to train with her teammates. As COVID-19 restrictions allowed training again, the team reminisced about their time together.

“There is a totally limited amount of time you get. You get four years,” Meyer said in a September 2020 interview. “That means we have to take every single day incredibly, incredibly seriously. We are a team, we are a family and we are there for each other.”

If you or someone you know has the warning signs of suicide, seek help by calling the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at (800) 273-TALK (8255).

Times contributors Brittny Mejia, Hayley Smith, and Leila Seidman contributed to this report.
