When del Toro was about eight years old, he began experimenting with his father’s Super 8 camera, making short films using Planet of the Apes toys and other objects. In November 2017, it was reported that del Toro had canceled the project because no studios were willing to fund it.[58] In October 2018, it was announced that the film had been revived, with Netflix supporting the project. Netflix had previously worked with del Toro on Trollhunters. Many of the same details of the project remain the same, but with Mark Gustafson co-directing in place of Adam Parrish King. Del Toro was raised Catholic. In a 2009 interview with Charlie Rose, he described his upbringing as overly “morbid,” saying, “I mercifully lapsed as a Catholic … but as Buñuel used to say, ‘I’m an atheist, thank God.'” Although he insists that spiritually he “is not with Buñuel” and that “once a Catholic, in a sense always a Catholic”. He concluded: “I believe in man. I believe in humanity as the worst and best thing that has happened to this world.”[71] He has also responded to the observation that he considers his art his religion by saying, “It is. For me, art and storytelling fulfill fundamental, spiritual functions in my daily life. Father’s kidnapping 1997[ edit ]
Around 1997, del Toro’s father, Federico del Toro Torres, was kidnapped in Guadalajara. Del Toro’s family had to pay twice the ransom originally demanded. Immediately after learning of the kidnapping, filmmaker James Cameron, a friend of Del Toro since they met during the production of Cronos in 1993, withdrew over $1 million in cash from his bank account and gave it to Del Toro to order to help pay the ransom. 85] After the ransom was paid, Federico was released after being kidnapped for 72 days.
