Justin Morneau’s Wedding

Justin Morneau and Krista Martin’s romance could evoke a variety of baseball metaphors: he hit a home run, they’re a grand slam couple — whatever. But such clichés would miss the point. Justin may be a sports superstar, but he put down his bat and gloves and wore his heart on his sleeve for his January wedding to sweetheart Krista Martin. In truth, the only cliché that fits is that they plan to live happily ever after.

AT FIRST GLANCE

As a starting first baseman for the Minnesota Twins, Justin is widely regarded as one of the best players in Major League Baseball. In 2006 he was named the American League’s Most Valuable Player and in 2008 he won the Home Run Derby.

Krista, a native of Winthrop, Minnesota, graduated from Mankato State University in 2005. A biology major, she estimates that she only attended two or three Twins games before meeting Justin. So it’s not surprising that Justin’s celebrity status eluded her when she first met him in September 2006. She was drinking cocktails with friends when he approached her at DRINK in uptown Minneapolis.

“I thought she was beautiful and because of the little interaction we had, I thought she was funny,” says Justin.

However, Krista wasn’t so sure. He sent her a drink from the bar and she had the bartender pour it. “He chased me down the steps, out of the bar, gave me his number and said, ‘Please call me.'”

She called and they went to the cinema in Inver Grove Heights. It wasn’t until after their second date that she finally found out who he was. Justin gave her two tickets to a game and she heard his name read by the announcer.

“I was so beside myself. I thought he was a backup or something. I didn’t know he played first base,” she laughs. “Everyone still teases me about it.”

SAY IT WITH SAND

After those first few dates, they were inseparable. “I think there were only three or four days in the whole first year that I didn’t see him,” says Krista. “I did every road trip in 2007.”

The suggestion came during a trip to Hawaii in October 2007. The decision was an easy one for Justin. He says he knew she was the one “when I first saw her.” Justin had Krista distracted by a friend with a phone call during a sunset walk on the beach. While she was busy, he scratched in the sand: “Krista Nicole Martin I love you. Will you marry me?” By the time she got closer, he was down on one knee.

“It was so cute,” she says. “I could tell he was in a hurry because the question mark wobbled a bit at the end.”

RECOGNIZE THE DETAILS

Justin’s training and game schedule meant an offseason wedding. Krista and Justin also knew they were expecting many guests. A January 10, 2009 wedding and reception at the Landmark Center in downtown St. Paul was a natural choice. “We love Rice Park in the winter,” says Krista. “It’s one of our favorite places.”

Due to her itinerary, much of the day-to-day planning fell to Ambiente’s experienced Twin Cities wedding planner, Joan Nilsen. Working primarily via email and phone, Joan made several appointments during the few days Krista was in town.

“We were wise with our time and packed as much as we needed in a day,” says Joan. “Working with them was a blast from start to finish.”

The night before the big day, the wedding party celebrated with a groom’s dinner at the D’Amico Cucina in downtown Minneapolis. After a dinner with multiple options, including braised lamb ravioli, Berkshire pork loin, and warm chocolate truffle cake, Justin and Krista surprised their guests with an after-dinner bowling competition at the Park Tavern in St. Louis Park. They even included retro bowling shirts with name patches and logos designed by Krista.

“Everything else about our wedding was very traditional, and we wanted to put everyone off by adding some fun,” says Justin. “Krista and I are very competitive and love to bowl.”

THE BIG DAY IS COMING

After getting her hair by Laurie Gilham and makeup by Michelle Sachs of H Design, Krista donned a bespoke 100% silk and satin ivory dress from the Platinum collection. Bridal Accents Couture’s dress in Savage featured a hand-embroidered bodice, A-line skirt and beaded cathedral-length train with pleated details.

“The train is what I loved the most,” says Krista. “I really wanted a long hit and this one stood out from the rest.”

For his part, Justin opted for an ivory two-button tuxedo with a traditional notch, also from Bridal Accents Couture, adding a unique twist to the groom’s traditional attire. The rest of the men in the wedding party wore traditional black tuxedos with a Windsor tie.

Justin didn’t let the pressure of the day catch him. “I really wasn’t that nervous because proposing to her was one of the easiest decisions I’ve ever made,” says Justin. “I was more looking forward to the coming day.”

Krista chose a classic palette for the wedding: black, white and deep, stunning red. She carried a bouquet of rich red roses and dahlias, fern sprouts, Black Forest Miniature Calas and red Hypericum by Wisteria Design, all wrapped in a deep red satin ribbon. Her companions carried bouquets of a variety of white roses, spray roses, white dahlias and freesias – also from Wisteria – which contrasted dramatically with their black David’s Bridal gowns.

As per tradition, Krista did not want to see Justin or even her father before the ceremony at Mount Olivet Lutheran Church in southwest Minneapolis. That was the only moment Justin almost lost his composure.

“As we waited in the church just before the ceremony, I got a little nervous,” he says. “But that feeling went away as soon as she walked through the doors of the church. I thought she looked amazing.”

After the traditional Lutheran ceremony, the couple were escorted to the Landmark Center in a white Rolls Royce by Classic Restoration.

THE ROMANTIC FURNISHING

Upon arrival at the Landmark Center, guests were treated to cocktails and hors d’oeuvres on the second level. Chef Lance Kapps of the Saint Paul Hotel’s nibbles included Asian spoon roasted beef tenderloin with red onion jam and sliced veal with grilled corn relish.

To create the romantic atmosphere of the evening, the crews started setting up at 2:30 that morning. Behind the scenes, 16 crew members from Instant Request Disc Jockey Entertainment worked on an intricate lighting and production schedule.

One hundred LED lights surrounded the Landmark Center’s perimeter on two levels, creating a warm glow and enhancing its architectural beauty. Forty-eight penlights hung on the fourth floor, projecting white light onto the centerpiece of each table. Sixty specially crushed dichroic gobos created texture and color on the ceiling covering, periodically changing hue throughout the evening.

Linen Effects designers echoed the Landmark Center’s columns and draped all four tiers, accented with white sparkling lights. “We wanted our wedding to feel very warm even though it was cold outside,” says Krista.

Wisteria Design arranged the centerpieces on each table – covered with black taffeta tablecloths, hand-stitched with white Linen Effects ribbons – with two different tiers of flowers. Half the tables were adorned with tall candelabras of deep red flowers, including roses, dahlias and Jamesstory orchids. The other half was centered with flat raised formations in the same palette. Both featured crystal garland accents and were surrounded by rose petals and votive candles.

AN IMPORTANT MENU

Justin and Krista made sure no one went hungry at reception. Chef Lance Kapps designed a feast that included Minnesota wild rice soup; a baby spinach salad with brie, strawberries and a raspberry poppy seed vinaigrette; and a main course of beef and salmon fillets or saltimbocca chicken served with rock prawns and basil risotto.

“We’ve eaten at Saint Paul Grill a few times and loved their spinach salad with strawberries,” says Justin. “So this was a must on our menu.” Dinner was served on diamond-edged black plates, black satin napkins and a mix of black and clear goblet, all Linen Effects.

The couple made a bold choice with their wedding cake: a dramatic five-tier cake covered in black fondant, edible white pearls, white tendrils and a white edible monogram and red flowers. “I’ve only made one other black wedding cake in my 12 years in this business,” says Robin Martin of Gateaux, Inc. in Plymouth. “We just took our time and did everything perfectly.”

Cake flavors included Pumpkin Walnut with Cream Cheese Filling, Smoking (chocolate cake and white cake separated by fudge filling), and Cream Cheese Nirvana (white cake filled with cream cheese and fresh raspberries).

Krista also surprised Justin with a four-tiered groom’s cake with glazed recreations of all his favorite things: trips, the twins, even ketchup chips — a ketchup-flavoured Canadian potato chip made by Old Dutch. The bottom of the cake, also by Gateaux, copied his sandwritten proposal with brown sugar as the beach.

THE PARTY BEGINS

During the cocktails and dinner, guests were treated to a photomontage of Justin and Krista created by Instant Request. The show ran on eight 60-inch plasma televisions strategically placed around the perimeter of the Landmark Center’s main level. Three live cameramen were also on hand to film the speeches and first dance, which were also broadcast on the plasma screens.

For relaxation, Linen Effects created a Miami-style lounge, adorned with white leather furniture and white curtains, next to the dining and dancing area.

The dance included tracks performed by Instant Request’s Nate Anderson and live music by Cookie Coleman and Friends during the dinner. During the packed dance, a custom glass gobo projected Justin and Krista’s monogram onto the floor on the second floor.

The evening ended with Bill Withers’ ‘Lean on Me’, a fitting metaphor for this inseparable jet set couple. After a honeymoon in the Turks and Caicos, Justin and Krista split their time between their five homes, including one in Mendota Heights.
