Kron Moore isn’t a scary person in real life, but she plays one on TV.
The Detroit-based star of BET’s The Oval says she draws on multiple inspirations to achieve the level of creepiness necessary to become First Lady Victoria Franklin on the show.
“I went back to ‘Dynasty’ and Diahann Carroll and loved (her character) Dominique Devereaux growing up and watching her,” says Moore. “And Meryl Streep, one of my favorite actresses, in ‘The Devil Wears Prada’ … and Angelina Jolie in ‘Maleficent,’ I think she’s evil but misunderstood.”
Though Victoria sounds overdone, the character fits perfectly into the guilty pleasure style of The Oval, the prime-time soap opera created, produced, written and directed by entertainment mogul Tyler Perry.
Describing the show, now in its second season, Moore said, “It’s a wild, crazy rollercoaster ride and we’re having a lot of fun doing it.”
Officially titled Tyler Perry’s The Oval, the series was ignored by TV critics and toasted on social media when it premiered two years ago. But it did well in the reviews. The season one finale in July 2020 drew more than 3 million viewers, according to Deadline.
The very first episode of “The Oval” began with a devastating, drawn-out brawl between Moore’s Victoria and her husband, Hunter Franklin (Ed Quinn), who viewers were only identified to viewers as the nation’s first interracial first couple after their fight ended.
The storylines are full of scandals ranging from secret love affairs and child kidnapping to gruesome murders. Much of the chaos unfolds in the White House.

“The Oval” was a watershed moment for the actress, who starred in musicals and plays as a child, grew up on Detroit’s west side, and sang with R&B and soul groups as a teenager. After graduating from Southfield High School, she attended Western Michigan University before transferring to the University of Alabama and taking undergraduate medical courses.
Moore says she felt drawn back to performing after earning her bachelor’s degree in psychology. “If it’s something in your stomach, you have to follow. … It’s kind of one of those things that chose me, I didn’t choose it,” she says.
She recorded a solo album in 2002, but admits her career as a recording artist was “short-lived because the industry is so brutal.” While studying at Specs Howard School of Media Arts in Southfield, one of her teachers encouraged her to find a talent agent. She took the advice and began booking jobs in TV commercials and theater.
Moore has appeared in several on-site musicals, including Ain’t Misbehavin’ and Little Shop of Horrors. She also got minor roles in television and film projects coming to Detroit for Michigan’s film incentive program, which was very competitive from 2008 to 2015. She appeared on ABC’s “Detroit 1-8-7” and played a teacher in 2014 in the tornado disaster film “Into the Storm”.
“The industry rallied in the Detroit market. I thought it was a good time for me to look into it,” she says. “It sure was good while it lasted.”

As Michigan ended its film incentive program, Moore focused on another important hub, Atlanta, home of Tyler Perry Studios. “I assumed I could come here and pick up where I left off,” she says. “And that wasn’t the case. It has taken me some time to develop relationships with the casting directors here.”
After working twice as a daytime actor on Perry’s productions, Moore was asked to read for Victoria on The Oval. She wasn’t sure if the role was right for her, so she decided to give the character her own spin and make her quietly menacing. A few days later, Perry reached out to offer her the role. “It was pretty surreal,” she recalls.
The Oval debuted in October 2019, the same month that Perry opened his massive 12-sound stage studio on the former site of Fort McPherson, a military base. The show is part of a long-term deal between Viacom and Perry, the creative force behind the Madea film series and TV shows like The Haves and Have Nots.
This year saw Perry make his first Forbes billionaire list, but he’s not resting on his laurels. Perry is constantly on the set of The Oval and, according to Moore, works “every single day from our call time to completion.” “I’ve never seen anyone work as hard and diligently as he does.”
The cast and crew are sticking to an intense shooting schedule. It usually takes Perry just 2½ weeks to shoot an entire 22-episode season. “We generally get a take to perform, so it’s a little bit like the soap operas and a little bit like the theater,” says Moore.
She recalls bursting into tears after an early scene in which she was told to throw a bucket of water on her sleeping daughter. But she’s comfortable in the role and says the cast is supportive and prepared for the fast pace. “We all understand the task, right? So when we go in, we know what’s expected of us.”
Perry also helps keep sentiment upbeat, according to Moore. “You never know what’s going to come out of his mouth. Every once in a while Madea shows up here on set and it’s just a hoot.”
Perry was among the first producers to start filming again last year during the COVID-19 pandemic. He’s set up quarantine bubbles at his Atlanta facilities for people working on projects like The Oval.
According to Moore, strict regulations have protected the cast and crew and created a kind of camaraderie within the bubble. “Obviously it was a bit scary at first. But Tyler reached out to the cast on a Zoom call. He introduced us to the idea of a camp quarantine. He said that unless everyone was on board, he wouldn’t do it. … He started testing us a few weeks before camp.
Moore believes “The Oval” can offer viewers a break from life’s many real-life anxieties in 2021. … It gives us a little respite from all the heavy stuff that’s going on in the world right now.”
Just don’t expect the action to slow down for the remaining episodes of the show’s second season — or the upcoming third season, which Moore finished filming a few weeks ago.
How much more over the top could it get? Says Moore with a laugh, “I can’t wait for you to see where it’s going. It’s crazy!”
