Dame Laura Jane Davies (born 5 October 1963) is an English professional golfer. She has achieved the status of her nation’s most successful female golfer of modern times,[2][3] she is the first non-American to top the LPGA money list[2] and win the Ladies European Tour (LET) Order of Merit set a record seven times: 1985, 1986, 1992, 1996, 1999, 2004 and 2006.[4][5]

As of 2018, Davies has had 87 professional wins worldwide, including 20 on the LPGA Tour, including four majors.[6] From 1985 to 2010, she won at least one singles title anywhere in the world in every season except 2005 and became the first female golfer, male or female, to win tournaments on five continents in one year. She is a member of the US-based LPGA Tour and a lifetime member of the Ladies European Tour.[7] She was inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame in 2015.[8]

Amateur career[edit]

A native of Coventry, Davies started as an amateur international for Great Britain and set an impressive record. She was 1983 English Intermediate Champion, 1984 Welsh Ladies Open Stroke Play Champion and 1983 and 1984 South Eastern Champion.[4] She was also a member of the British and Irish Curtis Cup team in 1984. In 1985 she turned pro.

Career[edit]

Davies began her professional career in 1985 on the WPGET (now the Ladies European Tour) when she won both the Rookie of the Year and Order of Merit titles.[4] She went on to win the Sports Journalists’ Association’s Peter Wilson Trophy for International Newcomer of the Year in 1985.[10] She repeated the Order of Merit win in 1986 after winning four titles, one of which was the British Women’s Open (before it became a major).

In 1987 she went to the United States and won the U.S. Women’s Open in an 18-hole playoff against Ayako Okamoto and JoAnne Carner. It was a victory that prompted the LPGA to change its charter. Davies was not a member of the LPGA Tour, so the LPGA amended its charter to grant Davies automatic membership.[11] Laura Davies has played on both the LPGA and the Ladies European Tour since 1988. In 1988, as a rookie, Davies won twice on the LPGA Tour, three times on the Ladies European Tour and once in Japan, becoming the first woman ever to win all three major tours in the same year.[2]

In 1990 she was a member of the first European Solheim Cup team. By 2011, she was the only player to return to every European team. Davies is the all-time leader in points won in the Solheim Cup and breaks Annika Sorenstam’s record by winning a Saturday four-ball match with Melissa Reid on September 24, 2011. Davies increased her record score to 25 by halving her singles match with Juli Inkster on September 25, 2011 as the Europeans won the Solheim Cup for the fourth time.

In 1994 she became the first golfer, male or female, to win on five different golf tours in a calendar year: USA, Europe, Asia, Japan and Australia.[4][13] and became the first European player to be unofficially ranked number one in the world.[2] She was named Sportswoman of the Year by the Sports Journalists’ Association in 1995 and 1996.

Davies is the only player to appear in the first 12 Solheim Cup games (1990–2011) on either the US or European sides.

Davies was part of the LPGA team in the Wendy’s 3-Tour Challenge three times between 1994 and 1996.

Her four consecutive wins at the J Golf Phoenix LPGA International between 1994 and 1997 made Davies the first LPGA player to win the same tournament in four consecutive years.

She represented England at the Women’s World Cup of Golf in 2005 (with Karen Stupples),[17] 2006 (with Kirsty Taylor)[18] and 2007 (with Trish Johnson)[19]. At the 2006 Lexus Cup, she was the captain’s selection for the international team.[20]

In 2004, Davies became the first woman to compete on the men’s European Tour and competed at the ANZ Championships in Sydney, Australia, playing from the same tees as the men. She failed to make the cut and finished second to last. She currently holds the LPGA Tour record for most Eagles in a season, scoring 19 goals in the 2004 season.

Davies was the first woman to compete in an event on the European Senior Tour. She played from the same tees as her male opponents at the 2018 Shipco Masters in Denmark.[23]

In 2018, at age 55, Davies finished runner-up in the Bank of Hope Founders Cup on the LPGA Tour, including shooting a round of 63 on Saturday.
