Our journey

I, too, started this health journey out of medical necessity. When my boys were little (around 2004) they didn’t thrive…they were allergic to everything. Every doctor we took her to gave us the same prescriptions for allergy meds, benadryl and an epi pen. After reading Weston Price’s Nutrition and Physical Degeneration, we took matters into our own hands and started with organic, pasture-raised, and wild-caught nose-to-tail foods with a variety of organic, seasonal fruits and vegetables. My boys haven’t been to a doctor’s office since because…well…they don’t have to. My boys never get sick…they don’t get the flu…they don’t get allergies. The crazy thing is that my kids aren’t studying as madly as other kids are today (not even close) and they don’t even practice walking…they’re just mentally and physically fit! ACTIVATE ANCIENT WAYS [SLEEP, NUTRITION, EXERCISE, SUN]

You are right…I’m not a hospital…I’m not a doctor…and this isn’t medical advice…but I have a degree in biochemistry. I wrote a thesis on the chemistry and biochemistry of nutritional supplements. I am a Primal Blueprint Certified Health Coach and have been obsessed with ancestral health and life for over twenty years. Maybe my best testimonial is that I care about people. [1] SLEEP LIKE A ROCK…

In the health hierarchy, sleep trumps almost everything else. It’s the low-hanging fruit that can affect health metrics more than anything else. It is the time when the body and brain are detoxified, recovered, rebuilt and restored. how great is your sleep Exactly what I thought! Instead of writing a long, boring article about sleep, I’ll bring this up…

Expose yourself to the sun in the morning (at the same time every day) to regulate the sleep-wake cycle.

Finish your last meal at least 3 to 4 hours before bed…trust me you can do this.

Grounding… you can do it the old fashioned way or you can use ground plates like we do (Google it). We do barefoot walks all the time… we use an EMF meter to make sure there are no electric fields around our bed… we turn off the wifi (actually we don’t have wifi but you do, so turn it off at night)… put your phone on airplane mode and make sure there are no electronics (or lights) near you.

…you can do it the old fashioned way or you can use grounding foils like we do (Google it). We do barefoot walks all the time… we use an EMF meter to make sure there are no electric fields around our bed… we turn off the wifi (actually we don’t have wifi but you do, so turn it off at night)… put your phone on airplane mode and make sure there are no electronics (or lights) near you. Your sleeping temperature should be between 64 and 68.

Use blackout drapes and blackout blinds…the room needs to be pitch black. No battery lights, no night lights, nothing!

At sunset, use Himalayan salt lamps instead of normal lighting.

Wear UVEX goggles at least 2 hours before bed… it really is a big deal. They cost $9 and they make all the difference. If you don’t want to do anything else, do this!

No, you don’t have to go all out and start sleeping on the floor, but you do have to get the morning sun (on your skin and through your retinas), connect to the earth, and spend $10 on UVEX glasses. I’m buried with emails about the UVEX glasses…thanks for asking…here is my explanation starting with a link to the blue light blocking glasses my tribe and I wear. They’re usually $10 or so (if they’re in stock). I suggest the whole tribe/family wear them two hours before bed for the best, restful night’s sleep ever.

The activity/rest (sleep) cycle in us mammals is one of the circadian rhythms that is normally influenced by environmental stimuli such as natural light/darkness. These cues no longer exist in the modern world as blue light is now ubiquitous… blue light is emitted by all screens, smartphones, digital clocks and almost all artificial lights in the home. UVEX goggles block this non-native light spectrum that occurs when the sun goes down. I recommend wearing the UVEX glasses at least 2 hours before bed. Even if our entire house is lit only by firelight, I find myself reaching for my glasses because I don’t want even a glimpse of ambient artificial light to disrupt my sleep physiology. Once again, they cost $10… the benefits are tremendous. The ego holds people back.

[2] EAT LIKE OUR EARLY ANCESTORS… Next comes the question of how you eat… there is no amount of supplements that can beat a poor diet. Yes, supplements will absolutely help (in fact, they can make a huge difference), but diet is absolutely fundamental. For this reason, I’m a big proponent of the ketogenic diet (nose-to-tail carnivores, actually) and ancestral eating habits as tools…not really a diet per se, but a way of eating that mimics that of our early ancestors. I’ve been cycling in and out of ketosis for over a decade now (long before it became very popular). I wrote a book about ketosis. The following is from this book…

Dietary ketosis can have health benefits in conditions like epilepsy, Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, ALS, MS, autism, traumatic brain injury, and more.*[14] By now you’ve heard all the rage about ketosis, also known as the ketogenic diet. It’s the new diet that everyone is doing, right! Actually, ketosis isn’t new at all…it’s been around for…well…as long as we (humans) have existed. Ketones provided the energy substrate for our brains and bodies when glucose was unavailable, such as during times of famine that were common among our early ancestors. Luckily for us, biology has found an elegant solution to the problem of erratic food sources and a big, hungry brain… ketosis.

— Ketosis certainly helps people with neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s, age-related cognitive decline, epilepsy and Parkinson’s disease* — — A spate of anecdotes suggests that otherwise healthy people may derive cognitive benefits from the use of ketones in the brain. Wife and I belong to this outpouring…love the improved mental capacity! * — — Ketosis upregulates mitochondrial biogenesis in the brain. It literally creates new brain power plants that are good at burning fat-derived fuel and mopping up brain fog* —

For the record, unless there is a neurodegenerative, mood and/or memory disorder on board, I don’t think we all need to be on a ketogenic diet, nor do we all need to stay in ketosis for any length of time; However, I think we need to slip in and out of ketosis regularly… just like our early ancestors would have done. After all, we seem to be built specifically for it, and we derive massive health and happiness benefits from it. We know that it appears to stave off neurodegeneration and improve the brains of people who already suffer from it.*[16]

NOTE: Ketosis is a high-fat, moderate-protein, and low-carbohydrate diet. Medium-chain triglycerides (MCT oil), intermittent fasting (IF), and prolonged fasting all increase ketone bodies. Check out what I eat (below), but be careful with too much protein as it can throw you out of ketosis. A typical keto meal should be 70% to 75% healthy fats, 20% protein, and 5% carbohydrates. The best book I’ve read about ketosis, which is also available on Audible, is Keto Clarity. UPDATE: Hands down my favorite book here is Primal Fat Burner – it’s required reading for the entire tribe here at Ancestral Supplements… a godsend to us Sapiens.

For these reasons, my tribe (family) and I follow seasonal eating habits that allow us to slip in and out of ketosis. If we’re feeling really good, maybe we’ll stay in a little longer. It helps us think, perform and produce. The following is an idea of ​​how and what we eat… Notice that we also go through times of feasting and famine with 24 to 120 hour fasts and huge refeeds where almost nothing resembling original food is is taboo.

NOTE: Water fasting (consuming only water and minerals) is probably the single most powerful metabolic intervention out there…it’s accessible to everyone…it saves time and money…it’s the standard way of life in the animal kingdom…First recently, certain animals (including Sapiens) have had such easy, unlimited, and effortless access to food. Can’t figure out how to heal and stay healthy…consider a 5 day water fast to address root cause issues. Do it as needed…sometimes my wife and I do it once a month because it’s awesome! No, this isn’t medical advice, but it’s the way animals, including humans, have healed for millennia upon millennia…it still works in the modern world.

OUR TYPICAL 1ST MEAL IS A DELICIOUS SHAKE AND IT LOOKS LIKE…

Wallaby Organic / Grass-Fed Yogurt (2 cups or 150g)

Organic ghee and/or pasture tallow (2 to 3 tablespoons or 30 to 45 g)

Organic Almond Butter (2 tablespoons or 30g) – occasionally only

Ancestral “living” collagen / gelatin (10-20g)

Himalayan Sea Salt – 1/4 tsp (2 to 3 g)

Organic / Grassfed Protein Powder (1 scoop) – I like Bluebonnet Grassfed Protein

Raw organic/grazing eggs (6 to 8 large eggs)

Organic, fresh, and raw pasture-raised milk (1 cup or 150g)… raw is best, but Whole Kalona Brand Milk is a good second option if you’re not using raw milk. If you cannot tolerate milk, find an alternative.

It takes me a whopping 15 minutes to make this shake… It’s super convenient… and it’s downright delicious. When I’m not making a shake, I’ll have a few grass-fed eggs (8 or so) smothered in a colossal amount of butter or tallow (rendered from tallow), topped with crispy sea salt, a side of avocado, nitrate-free, sugar-free bacon, and a Dollop of homemade fermented yogurt or sour cream. Are you kidding me… don’t even try to tell me that your breakfast is more flavorful and healthier. I usually eat my first meal at 3pm…it’s called “breakfast” because it breaks my fast.

OUR TYPICAL SECOND MEAL IS MOST COOKED… IT’S HOT… IT’S BETTER THAN ANY RESTAURANT FOOD… IT LOOKS THAT…

Homemade Bone Soup (cooked with tons of Goldmark for two to three days)

I also enjoy some fermented fish sauce or some version of a fermented animal product (e.g. high liver) almost every day of the week.

Organic avocado (avocado optional: topping with fish eggs or Icelandic cod liver, a few drops of lemon juice and sea salt)

Grass-fed butter, ghee, or tallow (2 tablespoons)

The occasional dark leafy greens salad (in season only) and sea salt

in season) and sea salt Grass-fed organs (16 to 24 oz of various animal parts, nose-to-tail)

We could carb-load on the weekends with copious amounts of sweet potatoes, raw local honey, and assorted seasonal fruits. We also fast for 24 to 30 hours on Sundays… it’s not as bad as it sounds. We eat an early dinner like we normally would early Saturday night…skip our first meal on Sunday and eat an amazing fish-based dinner (usually wild-caught skin and bones sardines; wild fish eggs; and whole cod liver oil (as opposed to processed cod liver oil)) with the entire stem on Sunday. Once a quarter we do a 5-day water-only fast (adults only).

TO UPDATE:

If you’re not already 100% healthy… if you have autoimmune symptoms, or chronic/recurring fatigue, or eczema, or gut and/or mood issues, etc., I suggest going on a true nose-to-tail carnivore diet (without eggs or dairy products) for 30 days. You will be amazed how many people need this to regain the best version of themselves. For expert guidance, head to Paul Saladino’s (the nose-to-tail functional medicine) website here. If I take an active rest day on Thursday, I don’t eat anything. As a result, I get a regular 48-hour fast almost weekly. According to Nasha Winters, eating is a surefire way to prevent cancer.

SUPPLEMENTS WE ARE TAKING / SUPPLEMENTS YOU SHOULD TAKE

Magnesium… transdermal magnesium oil applied to feet before bed and oral magnesium.

Vitamin D3 — we don’t take that, and I don’t think you should either…get it from adequate sun exposure, wild fish eggs, bacon, and grass-treated tallow.

Vitamin K2 – only if we don’t eat pith, tallow, and tons of egg yolk regularly, which we basically never do.

Remember that my tribe and I eat a very nutrient dense diet. We eat the whole animal just like our ancestors did… Right, we eat liver, lungs, kidney, pancreas, spleen, heart, thymus, bones, tendons, ligaments and more… and we eat like this every day ( except on vacation we take supplemental supplements from liver, bovine organs and bone marrow). We love our bone broth (that’s my wife’s specialty) and we eat tons of grass-fed eggs. You never know, ancestral eating habits (i.e., cycling back and forth between paleo, ketosis, carnivore, and fasting) could easily be the missing link to the energy, mood, memory, and mental performance benefits we’re all looking for. This is how our early ancestors ate. Start eating like this to build your biological resistance.

I continue to eat like our early ancestors, but lately with an emphasis on MTOR-rich foods like raw eggs post-workout. [3] MOVE LIKE OUR EARLY ANCESTORS… A disparity between our ancestral and modern environments when it comes to physical activity and natural exercise is almost as big as diet. Based on paleoanthropological evidence from hominid fossils and from the study of individuals living in contemporary hunter-gatherer societies, humans were quite mobile and very active. People in hunter-gatherer groups probably walked about 10,000 steps a day. What you do with your body is just as important as what you put it through… By maintaining a “healthy level of exercise” you develop a healthy approach to consumption where instincts become far more recognizable and useful. The well-being that builds from balanced exercise trumps the need for consumption-based gratification, such as food, painkillers, alcohol, drugs, etc. Don’t believe me…try it! Try to move more… I’m not asking you to try too hard here. I’m just asking you to put one foot in front of the other. Take 10,000 steps a day (or) walk for 60 to 90 minutes. Here’s how I do it… First thing in the morning I go for a twenty to thirty minute walk…this is my cup of coffee

In the early afternoon I go for a twenty to thirty minute walk…that’s my nap

After dinner, our tribe goes for a thirty-minute walk rain, snow, or shine. I also lift heavy things, but this is an adjunct to slow movements. Move and see other things fall into place.

[4] AVOID HAZARDS LIKE OUR EARLY ANCESTORS…

Avoid dangers like our ancestors did (think lions, trans fats, sugars, fluoride, excessive wifi, electromagnetic fields, vaccines, mercury fills, toxic people, pollution, non-native water, plastics, non-native clothing (polyester, acrylic, acetate, nylon usw.), nicht einheimische Bettwaren, nicht einheimische Ess- und Trinkbehälter, nicht einheimische Toilettenartikel, nicht einheimische Gerüche (Parfums, Lufterfrischer), Flammschutzmittel usw.) … Dies ist von Natur aus eher kategorisch, weil zu alles unter dieser Kategorie aufzulisten , wäre praktisch unmöglich. [5] MIT DER ERDE VERBINDEN…

Das ist der einfache Teil … es kostet nichts … es erfordert keine große Anstrengung … alles, was Sie tun müssen, ist, Ihre Schuhe auszuziehen und Ihre nackten Füße direkt auf die Erde zu stellen ( Gras, Schmutz, Kies, Sand usw.). That’s it! Tun Sie dies für 10 Minuten und achten Sie darauf, wie Sie sich fühlen. Do it in the morning, do it in the evening or do it every few days… some is better than none. If you see and feel the value in it, you’ll do it more… we (The Johnson Family) do it everyday for at least a few minutes and we do it weekly when we go on our barefoot hikes. I can’t say anything objective about it but I love the ancestral connection, and it just feels right!

[6] GET COLD…

Our early ancestors were regularly subjected to cold temperatures. It’s most likely why we humans have brown adipose tissue (BAT). BAT is especially abundant in newborns and in hibernating mammals.[9] It is also present and metabolically active in adult humans and its primary function is thermoregulation. In the modern world though, we are rarely subjected to cold temperatures for any real duration… Let’s face it, who likes that uncomfortable frigid feeling that comes with cold, especially when we have access to warmth 24/7. In modern times, we simply put on some clothes… turn up the heater… or we avoid the cold altogether by staying inside. Our potential for strength and health remains encoded in our DNA, and under certain conditions, we can genetically express the strongest, healthiest version of ourselves. Those “certain conditions” almost always have to do with nose-to-tail nutrition. In this instance, it has to do with getting cold.

— Improves blood circulation so the arteries work more efficiently at pumping blood, therefore boosting our overall heart health * — — Promotes “hardening,” which results in increased tolerance to stress and disease * — — Upgrades the immune system by increasing glutathione (our master antioxidant) and decreasing inflammatory markers * —

Intentional cold exposures initiate adaptive processes and response mechanisms that are hardwired into our genes. We have 60,000 miles of blood vessels within us that are lined with smooth muscles that constrict (or) dilate based on our perception of temperature. This process of vasoconstriction and vasodilation is like exercise for your blood vessels.

Cold exposure benefits include boosting heart health through improved circulation and increased tolerance to stress, upgraded immunity, and enhanced metabolic flexibility. Rhonda Patrick, PHD writes “cold exposures increase cold shock proteins including one in the brain that repairs damaged synapses and in muscle prevents atrophy, how a cold-induced catecholamine lowers inflammation and pain by decreasing the levels of 3 inflammatory mediators…” [10] This is very, very interesting stuff and it’s grounded in evolutionary science.

Give it a try. Start with cold / hot shower contrasts for 30 seconds at a time. At first, you’ll down right hate me for it because it is down right uncomfortable. Continue the shower contrasts over a 30 day period. Take notice how you feel afterwards… it will keep you coming back for more. It gets easier and easier because the adaptive mechanisms, including the smooth muscles that line the blood vessels, adapt… they get stronger, faster and more efficient at doing what they were designed to do. You will notice that your ability to withstand cold will increase considerably after only a few days. Like any other stressor, we adapt… it gets easier… and it starts to feel amazing.

[7] FAT SOLUBLE ACTIVATORS, SENSIBLE SUN EXPOSURE AND MAGNESIUM…

Our early ancestors didn’t brush… didn’t floss… didn’t get cavities. This is my “go to” line because it seems that the more we brush and floss and use fluoride, the more cavities we get. Obviously, brushing and flossing aren’t the answer, but don’t tell this to the multi-billion dollar dental industry (nor to the allopathic dentist). We all have the ability to remineralize our teeth… to withstand acidic insults… to arrest and resist decay. Nutrition giants Weston A. Price & May Mellanby published the data proving the vital importance that the fat soluble vitamins A, D and K play in tooth remineralization.

Wife is a biological dentist (of 20 years)… I own a supplement company (yours truly). In fact, we developed a consumable product together called “Tooth Restore” that was rich in vitamins A, D, K, magnesium, phosphorus (and others)… This is not in production nor commercially available; nor does it need to be for people to glean the benefits, because as you know, nourishing food comes first — Tooth Restore was a combination product of Liver, Bone Marrow, vitamin D and K2 (mk-4) and magnesium.

Our liver product is high in real, preformed vitamin A (5,000 iu per serving). That said, if you are deficient in vitamin D, vitamin K2 and/or magnesium, you will not see as much benefit as you could (nor) will you be optimizing other important health metrics. Do you regularly get mid day sun exposure, or take a vitamin D3 supplement? Do you eat fermented veggies like kimchi or sauerkraut or take a vitamin K2 supplement? Do you take a magnesium supplement (I personally recommend a transdermal magnesium oil spray because it’s virtually impossible to get enough magnesium from diet alone).

[ NOTE: Bone marrow is likely rich in vitamin K and the other fat-soluble nutrients, but formal tests to determine the range and amount remain to be carried out.[11] While smashing bones and sucking out the marrow fat was the hard way our ancestors obtained vitamin K, it’s not that difficult to obtain marrow bones and either oven roast 3″ pieces to serve as appetisers, or slow cook them to make them extra delicious / nutritious… or, look for a good bone marrow supplement! ]

The take home message here is live life in harmony with nature, the way of our early ancestors… love your bone soups, look to liver, get sensible sun exposure, eat your fermented foods (natto reigns supreme) and mind your magnesium. If you want fresh breath, brush your teeth. If you want oral health, nourish your body.

People with periodontal issues will also need additional support from whole bone extract (bone, marrow and cartilage), CoQ10 (or Beef Heart) and collagen (or Bovine Tracheal Cartilage). Ideally, we would consume these nourishing foods by indulging in the deliciousness of bone broth, bone marrow and organ meats (heart is the richest source of CoQ10 that exists in nature). [8] FOR MEN ONLY…

Men evolved fighting, hunting, protecting… struggling… persevering… winning. And when we win, we get rewarded with a boost of dopamine, androgens and more things that cultivate such behavior. Androgens also help us to win! In modernity, there are not a lot of natural opportunities for boys and men to put themselves in harms way… to overcome real struggle… to really fight for something of value… to win. I believe in contact sports but what happens when that’s over and done. I believe for us men to really thrive, we have to possess a type of high courage to continue to fight for something meaningful… to foster an inner fire… to take real risks… and to continue to create opportunities to win. Look for opportunities that scare the shit out of you… look for opportunities to live! Feel like your stuck in a rut… want some ideas… here ya go…

In the context of leading a relatively “normal” (boring, routine-driven) life, the key is change and primal purpose. Novelty is what our DNA expects but in the modern world, we do the same things over, and over, and over… just sort of existing in life, on autopilot… so change everything (sleep differently, eat differently, move differently)… change what you do… what you see… how you think… how you feel… how you are… become a greater level of mind, body and spirit to become a greater version of yourself.

Start with simple things like brushing your teeth with the other hand… cross your arms left over right… sit in a different chair in a different way… drive different paths to and from new and old places… don’t let yourself exist on autopilot… create novelty in everything that you do. We are sapiens of genus homo, hunters, gathers, nomads. Have you taken a freezing cold shower yet… if not, go do this right now… tell me how you feel after an ice cold shower… this elicits a state of being that will remind you of what it’s like to feel alive again. This ice cold shower seemingly puts you in harms way… you will endure struggle.. you will endure discomfort… you will overcome real and imagined struggle… remember this… comfort is not good for the organism.

Progress with other things like a 5-day water fast… this acts like a genetic reset of sorts and it provides the mind, body, spirit framework for real struggle. Start chopping firewood… make a backyard fire… start doing Crossfit and push yourself to the edge… buy a set of daggers and practice throwing proficiency or make a spear and do the same… go to the shooting range… get in a game of pick up basketball or paintball or a first person shooter game…

When was the last time that you did something that really scared the shit out of you… run from a lion… run from a dog… go bungee jumping… get on a roller coaster… go bouldering or rock climbing… take up an extreme sport… pick a fistfight that’s worth fighting for… (I did this at the post office one day when a man was bullying a woman clerk, he retreated).

As Diane Ackerman puts it, “Where there is no risk, the emotional terrain is flat and unyielding, and, despite all its dimensions, valleys, pinnacles, and detours, life will seem to have none of its magnificent geography, only a length.” In the context of a lifetime, these realizations and moments of intensity are ours to carry with us. They help expand the proportions of our living… they create a certain kind of energy that extends beyond our flesh… they fill a well that sustains the life we go back to. We are descendants of the sole surviving species of genus Homo (the baddest mammalian predators that ever lived).

Struggle Develops Strength

The koala bear once had a full-fledged brain that occupied the full innards of that cranium. Then, the koala discovered eucalyptus trees which provided massive 24/7 comforts… protection from prey and an endless buffet. As a species, the koala hasn’t had to really struggle for anything, for a very long time. As a consequence, they (the modern day koalas) now enjoy the smallest relative brain size of all such furry creatures and the relative intelligence of a snow globe. Does this story sound familiar… well, it should… because it’s happening to us modern day Sapiens. Struggle develops strength which is why “Do Something That Makes You Uncomfortable” is one of my favorite habits.

[9] Tribal BONDING

Since the inception of our species, we belonged to a far greater purpose… you’d be hard pressed to find things more primal than that of “purpose” itself. Think about it… purpose was guarding the perimeter from danger (lions, hyenas, other tribes) to protect one’s tribe… purpose was hunting and foraging to feed one’s tribe… purpose was building, tool making and weapon making to shelter and shield one’s tribe… purpose was care taking and love making to nurture, to nourish and to grow one’s tribe…. purpose was in teaching and in tradition, and in play to cultivate wise traditions, to deepen social bonds, and simply, to enjoy the most profound parasympathetic state of rest and relaxation. This kind of purpose decided whether people would live or die.

In a tribe, we believed and we belonged… we believed and belonged to each other (to thy fellow man; to thy fellow woman; to thy shared belief)… we belonged with such connection and purpose that we clearly knew our roles and goals as individuals and we knew exactly where we fit in… we knew our place in the tribe.. we knew our place in the world… in the modern world, most people don’t know their place in their own homes.

In the modern world, we don’t really have to band together and fight or struggle for anything anymore (unless there’s a horrific hurricane, a 9-11 attack or a mass public shooting) because uncle Sam has done that for us. We enjoy the illusion of protection and we enjoy the illusion of support and community… this allows us to sort of exist but certainly not thrive. This leaves us devoid of that primal purpose that our big brains evolved with… that our big brains still expect in the modern world to heal and be healthy.

If you want strength, health and happiness, you have to create your own purpose, you have to be part of something bigger and you have to identify a shared belief and you have to foster a culture of belonging (to one another; interdependence). You develop a sense of community… a sense that everyone is needed and that everyone is important… a sense of primal purpose that awakens the old spirit within.

Yes, men evolved fighting, hunting, providing, protecting and persevering (we’re hard wired to do so).

Women evolved nurturing, care taking, tool making and teaching (they’re hard wired to do so).

Kids evolved watching, modeling and helping their men and women protect and perform.

Everyone was needed… everyone was important.

TedTalk expert Lissa Rankin, M.D., a former OB/GYN and current mind-body medicine physician, quit her 9 to 5 to figure out why some people healed from “incurable” diagnoses and others didn’t. She scoured the evidence and she detailed her findings in her New York Times Bestseller Mind Over Medicine: Scientific Proof That You Can Heal Yourself. The gist of her findings is that, while diet and exercise are critical, laughter (tribal bonds), camaraderie (tribal bonds), a happy marriage (tribal bonds), and doing what you love for a living (tribal purpose), are the main determinants of health.

The take away… join a tribe of true believers and belong to one another (or) go out and create and lead your own.

The bond between dogs and sapiens is ancient, enduring and it feels better than a warm blanket on a cold morning. This connection runs deeper than you might think… it’s embedded in our genes. Sleep, food and lifestyle have to be fundamental to recovery and healing. I believe in an ancestral approach like an introduction to ketosis (with supplements), then cycle in and out of ketosis every couple of months. This will address the root cause of many issues…. reset insulin and leptin sensitivity, and get you well along in your health journey. Just remember that this is a journey, not a destination. Around every corner in the modern world is yet another ancient ancestral practice that has been tucked away for comfort and convenience. Each element above will contribute to health and healing. Don’t get overwhelmed but start doing a little, then a little more… Trust me, the body is absolutely amazing in its ability to heal if we just provide the right environment for it to do so. Are you getting the deep restorative sleep that our biology needs to recover, rebuild and repair? Are you consuming a varied diet with nose-to-tail nourishment (or) supplementing with our Liver, Beef Organs and Marrow? Are you currently getting sun exposure, eating wild fish eggs or taking tallow for its vitamin D3? Are you eating kimchi (or) natto for the K2? Make sleep, diet and lifestyle your priority… then start moving… then start moving more until. You don’t have to go crazy here but you have to find ways to move. Just remember it’s one step at a time.. it’s a journey. This stuff works! You have every reason to be hopeful.

A lot of people ask me about my religious affiliation. This is what I believe… I believe that we are all of one peoples… I believe that we, and our animal brethren, breathe from the same air… that we drink from the same body of water… that we share the same life giving sun and forces that nourish our strikingly similar DNA. I believe that my fellow man is my brother and that my fellow woman is my sister. I believe that it’s in our ability to deeply love, bond, nurture and share the success of the hunt that we have become the very humans that we are today — I believe that all of this is possible because of a greater, higher power.

FAVORITE WORKOUT

My unequivocal favorite workout is called “Barbarian;” it’s a wearable weight workout+ in which we honor our ancestors. Barbarian is a global exemplar of ancestral-inspired full body functional training. It also happens to be the initiation experience for everyone that joins the tribe here at Ancestral Supplements (women do a version with 53lb implements). It’s a 1 mile drudge carrying 70lb kettlebells in ea hand, wearing a 70lb pack, pulling 70lbs on-top of a sled (w/ shoulder straps) and 20lb ankle weights. Every step is unsteady, off balance, as if trekking through shin-deep mud and carrying a fallen comrade back from battle. Shoulders and upper back remain lit up; never get a rest. Grip, grit and absolute resolve are measured in steps. NOTE: sled weight for asphalt is 120lbs on-top of sled for men / 85lbs on-top of sled for women.

Yeah, it’s totally barbaric… it totally garners all kinds of looks, comments and sympathy from outsiders (aka neighbors)… I do this just about every Wednesday. It’s a time that reminds me that there’s really nothing harder in life (at least my life) and that all other seemingly challenging obstacles will require less physical, mental and emotional wherewithal. It reminds me that our barbaric ancestors performed this kind of back breaking work on a regular basis. It reminds me that this is my barbaric lineage… we are descendants of the sole surviving species of genus Homo (the baddest, most barbaric mammalian predators that ever lived).

FASTING CONTINUED

I have no doubt that various fasting methodologies optimize hormone status. Big picture is the “biological law of accommodation,” which has a strong interplay with hormesis. The law clearly works with exercise… it works with diet… it works with calories too.

Since October 2017, wife and I have been practicing a 5-day water only fast at the beginning of each month. On day 1, we do an all-out-effort workout (e.g. like back-to-back Fran) to simulate a failed hunt. If you had any glycogen around before the workout, now you don’t! Then, we fast as usual on days 2, 3 and 4 (lots of walking, lots of ice showers, lots of rest); however, day 5 is another all-out-effort workout to simulate a successful hunt (e.g. Assault Bike intervals).

Let me modestly state that I’m pretty strong with a decent build, and that I wouldn’t be doing this experiment for very long if it compromised my ego gains. That said, we always lose a solid 7 to 10 lbs (fat, muscle, water and waste)… the next 2 weeks we are always a little bit weaker, less metabolically fit and a little less lean mass. Weeks 3 and 4 are when the magic happens… stronger, fitter and more muscle than baseline. I also see the autophagic and apoptotic benefits as the best health/ life insurance policies that money can buy.

As it relates to how I break my fast, after a successful hunt on the Assault Bike, I blend up some fresh, pasture-raised, grass finished liver with some salty bovine blood. Sometimes, I like to dice up some avocados and sprinkle some crunchy sea salt, and spoon the savory dish like a gourmet soup – chilled of course. I usually top it off with some organic, pasture-raised egg yolks. HINT: skip the avocado if you’re doing the fast for health recovery.

Yeah, yeah, I know… there’s a bunch of popular information on the interwebs about eating a salad and /or some clear (calorie-less, taste-less) soup. That doesn’t seem very ancestral to me. I believe in ancestral living… I believe that if our early hominid ancestors were starving, after a successful hunt, they would have consumed the fresh liver, a few bites of heart and as much salty blood as the body could bear. I’m not saying that I’m right… this is just what I believe.

Summation, fasting is badass for the human organism… short-term fasting, longer-term fasting, intermittent fasting… the key is to be smart… try various strategies… when your body adapts to one, try something different!

HOW I DRINK ALCOHOL [W/ ZERO HANGOVER]

I actually get quite a few inquires about drinking alcohol. To be certain, I advocate [4] AVOID DANGERS LIKE OUR EARLY ANCESTORS DID… but this whole ancestral living thing has gotta be practical, or it doesn’t work. That said, if you can become more robust… if you can build biological resilience so that you can better withstand dangers, poisons and toxins, by all means, have some poison.

There’s nothing wrong with a little alcohol from time to time… especially if it’s done right! Wife and I have drinks every now and then and it’s clear that the benefits of the sensible indulgence outweigh anything else. An interlude with a good drink (a bottle of wine, or a bottle of Everclear) can deepen the experience… it can strengthen the bond… it can be profoundly positive… in context, of course. There’s no room in my life for hangovers, which is why I only drink 95% ethanol… here’s how I do it…

NOTE: Ethanol (aka alcohol) is the intoxicating agent found in beer, wine and liquor. The problem these days is that alcoholic drinks are not pure enough… commercial interests add terrible, terrible things for looks, taste, texture, preservatives… and the list goes on (think even more poisons). These additive poisons wreak havoc on your liver, body and brain and cause hangover-like symptoms. Why not just avoid them altogether.

Start with an empty stomach. Yep, that right! If ya don’t, you’re sending your liver to work overtime. Next, take some liposomal glutathione 15 to 30 minutes before your first drink. With your first drink, and each subsequent drink, throw 4 or so Liver capsules down the hatch. This is what I drink…

Everclear – 1 shot

– 1 shot Lemon/s – 1 to 2 freshly squeezed lemon juice with a little rind shaved off into the mix

Stir, drink and be merry with friends and loved ones. I usually have 3 of these and I’m totally good to go! Wife has 1 to 2 and she thinks she’s hilarious (that’s when I know she’s really buzzed). It’s imperative to only have these drinks, or non-calorie drinks (w/ no fake stuff) or you’ll ruin the whole thing. Let your liver do it’s thing… let it work and let it breathe. Before binging on primal fare, wait at least 15 to 30 minutes from the last sip of your last drink, have another round of liposomal glutathione, wait a few minutes and have at it! Here’s a summary…

Start with people that you like… people in your tribe Empty stomach Liposomal glutathione (Core Med Science; take as directed) Liver capsules Make drinks; don’t forget the pink sea salt (otherwise) it doesn’t work Only consume these drinks and/or mineral water… no food whatsoever (except Liver capsules) or it doesn’t work Re-dose w/ Liver capsules before each drink Liposomal glutathione; round 2 Eat eggs with extra yolks; I have round 9 to 12; wife has 6 to 8 Liposomal vitamin C (Mercola, take 2) Maybe some melatonin before bed (1 mg or so)

If you’re not gonna eat eggs, make sure that you down a good 6 egg yolks (otherwise) it doesn’t work, and take some liposomal vitamin C with your meal. The next morning, I feel great… I’m productive… I’m ready to go… no hangover symptoms that linger into the day nor the next day. This is what works for me.
