The self-published book bears a conspiratorial title and a supposedly urgent message: A Marxist plot is underway to infiltrate the military and overthrow the US government, it is said. Some of his subjects are familiar specters of right-wing politics — critical race theory, diversity initiatives, and the New York Times’ 1619 project — but those claims came from a new source last week: an active member of the U.S. Space Force.
Lt. Col. Matthew Lohmeier released his book “Irresistible Revolution: Marxism’s Goal of Conquest & the Unmaking of the American Military” this week and has appeared on several conservative podcasts to promote it, each time criticizing Defense Department leadership and blaming the agency for one To advance an agenda “rooted in Marxism.”
Lohmeier, who spent more than a decade in the Air Force before joining the military’s newest branch in 2020, was fired Friday for his comments, a move Military.com first reported a day later and published Sunday by confirmed to the Washington Post. Lt. Gen. Stephen Whiting, the head of Space Operations Command, relieved Lohmeier of his command of a squadron in Colorado that detects ballistic missile launches “due to a loss of confidence in his leadership ability,” a Space Force spokesman said in a statement.

“This decision was based on public statements made by Colonel Lohmeier in a recent podcast,” said the spokesman, adding that an investigation is underway “whether these statements constituted prohibited partisan political activity.”
In an email to The Post, Lohmeier said he consulted with a public affairs officer and a military legal adviser before publishing the book, and had a team of lawyers read the manuscript.
“I complied with what I felt was required as part of the pre-release process,” he said.
Lohmeier said he did not tell his chain of command that he was writing a book.
“All the work was done on my own funds in my free time, after hours and on weekends,” he said.
Lohmeier, who lives in Colorado, graduated from the Air Force Academy in 2006 and has spent time as a fighter pilot and instructor.

A description of the book promises readers, “Once you become aware of the Marxist conquest of American society, you will never look at things the same way again.” In podcast interviews over the past two weeks, Lohmeier argued that part of this “conquest” took place in the US military.
“What we’ve seen just over the past year in the countryside and in the military frankly was reminiscent of Mao’s Cultural Revolution, where you had to follow a certain party line,” Lohmeier said on The Steve Gruber Show, a conservative radio program, in a reference to Mao Zedong’s Cultural Revolution in China, which has claimed an estimated 1.5 million lives.
Some experts have denied Lohmeier’s claims.
“We seem to have more and more people rambling on about Marxism, Communism and Socialism who don’t seem to have a clue what they’re talking about,” said John Sipher, a former CIA agent and Atlantic Council staffer, in a tweet that appeared on Lohmeier’s comments responded.

As evidence, Lohmeier cites the Department of Defense’s efforts to combat racism and extremism within its own ranks after the failed Jan. 6 uprising, when a mob including a few dozen veterans and a handful of current service members stormed the US Capitol in an attempt rushed to overturn the results of the 2020 presidential election. The military pointed to the Capitol riots as an example of such extremism, Lohmeier argued, but failed to mention occasions when protests over the police killing of George Floyd in Minneapolis turned violent — another common talking point on the right. However, these protests were mostly peaceful.
In his interview with conservative commentator L. Todd Wood, Lohmeier also accused military leaders of “creating a hyper-politicized work environment where diversity and inclusion initiatives are constantly pushed forward.” He called Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin by name.
“I’m not demonizing the man, but I want to make it clear to both him and every member of the military that pursuing this agenda divides us, it won’t unite us,” Lohmeier said.

At a news conference earlier this month, Austin said there was “no place for hate or bigotry or extreme extremist behavior in this department or in the military.”
“This department has an open door for any qualified American who wishes to serve,” he said May 6. “This is a matter of national principle as well as national security. Diversity in the force is a source of strength. We cannot afford to be deprived of the talent and voices of the full breadth of a nation we defend.”
In interviews, Lohmeier has repeatedly criticized critical race theory, an academic framework that examines how politics perpetuates systemic racism. More recently, his denunciation has become a conservative rallying cry in the country’s Kulturkampf, with some state governments and school boards seeking to exclude him and other racial justice work from school curricula.
Lohmeier also said the New York Times’ 1619 Project, a collection of magazine articles about how slavery shaped the nation, was “anti-American.” Both lines of attack mirror those of former President Donald Trump, who lashed out at both the Times Project and critical race theory.

The controversy may have cost him his job, but it has made Lohmeier the latest celebrity topic for conservative pundits and Republican lawmakers, including Reps. Matt Gaetz (Fla.), Ken Buck (Colo.), and Dan Crenshaw (Tex.).
Gaetz called Lohmeier’s work patriotic and praised him for speaking out against “our military’s attempted wake-up call.” The Florida legislature said it would use its post on the House Armed Services Committee to call for “action” on the disciplinary action, but did not specify what the action would entail.

During his appearance on The Steve Gruber Show, Lohmeier said, “Since taking command as commander about 10 months ago, I have seen what I believe to be fundamentally inconsistent and competing narratives of what America was, is, and should be. Lohmeier also wrote a 2020 paper published by Air University Press on the Space Force. The paper, titled The Better Mind of Space, “explores space and space culture from two distinct perspectives: traditional and emerging. The former has shaped current military space culture.

The US Air Force has launched an investigation into a former Space Force commander who was fired over comments made during a podcast promoting his new book, which alleges Marxist ideologies are taking hold in the US enforce military.
A command-led investigation into Lt. Col. Matthew Lohmeier, who was fired last week as commander of the 11th Space Warning Squadron at Buckley Air Force Base, Colorado, is now being investigated by the Air Force Inspector General, officials said Thursday.
The Space Force falls under the Department of the Air Force.
“The decision was made by the Department of Air Force Inspector General due to the complexity and sensitivity of the issues under review, as well as the potential for DAF-wide implications,” Air Force spokeswoman Ann Stefanek said in the announcement.

The new review replaces the command-level investigation overseen by Lt. Gen. Stephen Whiting, head of Space Operations Command, Stefanek said. As a result, that review has been suspended, she said.
Whiting removed Lohmeier last week over a loss of confidence in his leadership ability after Lohmeier made public comments about his military experience to promote the self-published book “Irresistible Revolution: Marxism’s Goal of Conquest & the Unmaking of the American Military,” .com first reported .
During a 34-minute taped segment for “Information Operation,” hosted by Creative Destruction, or CD, Media, Lohmeier explained that diversity and inclusion training — something the Pentagon has highlighted to help root out extremism in the ranks — is ” rooted in critical race theory rooted in Marxism.”

Rather, he said, he focused on the guidelines service members must now adhere to in order to align with specific agendas “that are now influencing our culture.”
Referring to Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin, he said, “I’m not demonizing the man, but I want to make this [diversity and inclusion] agenda clear to both him and every member of the military, it’s going to divide us, it’s not going to unite us.”
Austin on February 5 ordered all military services to observe a one-day stand against extremism in the ranks.
“It was never my intention to engage in party politics,” Lohmeier said in an email to Military.com last week.
“I wrote a book about a certain political ideology (Marxism) in the hope that in the future our Department of Defense will again be politically bipartisan, as it has honorably done throughout history,” he added.
During a Tuesday briefing, Pentagon Press Secretary John Kirby addressed questions about Lohmeier’s removal and whether Lohmeier had consulted with appropriate officials prior to the release.
“Anytime you write a book based on your military experience or about military affairs, and you use your rank and title and service as an author as a means of authentication, you have to have a political review done by the Department of Defense,” Kirby said.
“I think the Air Force has already addressed the issue of not having a policy review.”
A self-published work may be governed by Department of Defense policy 1344.10 and related policies for discussing political activity in uniform. Services standards allow staff to express their opinions freely, but they are still expected to uphold the core values of their industry both on and off duty.
For example, the Office of Defense Pre-release and Security Clearance requires all current, former, and retired Department of Defense employees, contractors, and military personnel — active or reserve — who have had access to DoD information, facilities, or have signed a non-disclosure agreement to “disclose publicly available information of the Ministry of Defense for review and approval to the appropriate office”.
DoD information may include “any work related to military matters, national security issues, or topics of significant concern to the Department of Defense generally, including fictional novels, stories, and biographical accounts of operational deployments and wartime experiences,” according to the bureau.
