Jonathan Karl

American journalist

Jonathan D. Karl (born January 19, 1968) is an American political journalist and author.[1] Karl has every important assignment in Washington, D.C. covered, including the White House, Capitol Hill, the Pentagon and the State Department, and has reported on US politics, foreign policy and the military from more than 30 countries.

Karl is Chief Washington Correspondent for ABC News and co-hosts This Week with George Stephanopoulos.[2] Karl served as chief White House correspondent for ABC News from December 2012 until the end of the Trump administration in January 2021.

He is the author of the 2020 books Front Row at the Trump Show and the 2021 books Betrayal: The Final Act of the Trump Show. Both books are New York Times bestsellers.[3][4]

In 2021, Mediaite named Karl one of the top 10 “Most Influential in News Media”. The publication said: “Jonathan Karl has covered many important stories this year as ABC News’ Washington correspondent, but it’s the incredible coverage he has dished up in his best-selling book, Betrayal: The Final Act of the Trump Show , and how this book propelled the news cycle for weeks, earning its place so high on this list.”[5]

Early life[edit]

Karl attributes his passion for history and journalism to a time in his teens when his family moved to South Dakota. While living in two adjacent motel rooms in Hill City, SD, his mother and stepfather conducted an oral history project for the University of South Dakota and interviewed the men who worked to create Mount Rushmore. “I went along,” Karl later recalled, “when my stepfather and mother interviewed these men and heard about these experiences.”[6]

Karl graduated from Vassar College with Phi Beta Kappa in 1990, where he was Editor-in-Chief of Vassar Spectator.[1]

Career [edit]

Karl began his career as a researcher and reporter for The New Republic. In 1994 he became a reporter for the New York Post, covering New York City Hall. In 1996 he was hired to cover politics as a Generation X reporter at CNN and later became the network’s congressional correspondent.[6]

He joined ABC News in January 2003 as senior foreign affairs correspondent for the State Department.[7] He first interviewed Donald Trump in 1994 for a New York Post article about Michael Jackson and Lisa Marie Presley’s honeymoon in Trump Tower.[8][9]

He worked for ABC News, covering national political news, where he became Senior National Security Correspondent in December 2005. In 2006, Karl received an Emmy nomination for his coverage of the genocide in Darfur, Sudan.[10]

Karl was named chief White House correspondent for ABC News in December 2012[1] and held the position until the end of the Trump administration in January 2021. He remains ABC News’ chief Washington correspondent and co-host of This Week with George Stephanopoulos. Karl’s writings have been featured in The Wall Street Journal, The Atlantic, Vanity Fair, and other publications.

Although Karl is a correspondent for ABC News, he has appeared frequently on MSNBC, CNN, and Fox News in his capacity as a book author.[11]

controversy[edit]

In May 2013, Karl got into controversy when he wrote an article claiming to quote directly from an email from a White House aide.[12] It later emerged that the quote was inaccurately given to Karl by an unnamed source and that he himself had never seen the email. Karl apologized for the error and also for not stating that the quote was from a detailed summary provided by his source and not from a direct quote from the email.[13]

books [edit]

Karl is the author of the 1995 book The Right to Bear Arms: The Rise of America’s New Militia.[14]

Front Row at the Trump Show[ edit ]

His book Front Row at the Trump Show, written before the COVID-19 pandemic, was released in March 2020. It debuted at #3 on the New York Times Combined Print & E-Book Nonfiction Best Seller list as of April 19, 2020 and stayed in the top 15 for 5 weeks.[15]

The book was released in paperback with a new reprint in March 2021 and reached #6 on the New York Times Paperback Nonfiction Best Seller list.[16]

In a review on Goodreads, Chris Rosa wrote, “This is how you write a Trump book. Jonathan Karl avoids the usual pitfalls of reporting on Trump: personalization, sensationalism, feigned outrage, and exaggerated self-esteem. President Donald Trump is a difficult subject for journalists because of his game, which traps the press into which they often fall headfirst. Not Karl. He gets it. With a solid mix of serious factuality and light-hearted prose, Karl provides an accessible understanding of the strangest White House in US history. He also calmly and rationally explains the dangers that arise when our leaders disregard the truth or challenge democratic norms for personal gain.”[17]

The New York Times review called it an account of the first three years of Trump’s presidency. The book feels most weighty toward the end, when Karl addresses ‘the President’s incessant telling of untruths’ and Trump’s dangerous relationship with the press. He precedes a troubling private meeting in the Oval Office with the President on the subject, concluding: ‘I fear President Trump’s war on the truth may do lasting damage to American democracy.'”[8]

The Washington Post review calls the book “primarily a compilation of his encounters and interviews with Trump and members of his staff” with “far too much, often in somewhat tiresome detail, of Karl’s daily reporting on Trump.” According to the reviewer, “the report lacks analysis of the larger issues posed by Trump and his presidency,” while acknowledging in the epilogue “that Trump is ‘motivated only by an insatiable desire to advance himself, but his assault on the truth is poisonous and contagious.'”[18]

The review in The Guardian notes that the “well-organized and respectfully written” book ” conveys the chaos and characters that inhabit the President’s universe,” including “his supernatural disregard for truth — “Trump was a serial exaggerator long before he ran for the President” – and his odd fondness for the Confederacy.”[9]

Betrayal: The Final Act of The Trump Show [ edit ]

Karl’s next book, Betrayal: The Final Act of the Trump Show, focuses primarily on the final year of the Trump administration and was published in November 2021.[19] It debuted at #3 on the New York Times Combined Print & E-Book Nonfiction Best Seller list as of December 5, 2021 and stayed in the top 15 for 3 weeks.[20][21][22]

The Washington Post book review said, “Karl’s sobering, solid account of Trump’s final year in office sheds new light on how the man who lost the presidency nearly managed to overthrow the 2020 election. Anyone who thinks ‘this can’t happen’ should read this book.”[23]

In The Guardian, John S. Gardner wrote: “Jonathan Karl has produced what is arguably the most significant book of the year with Betrayal, in which members of the Trump cabinet ‘paint a portrait of an irate president, detached from reality and out for revenge ‘.”[24]

Larry Sabato of the University of Virginia named Betrayal the number one political book of 2021, saying: “Betrayal has brought a lot of news, but the reason I chose it is that it contains all the points that people have about the need to know what Karl calls ‘the final act of The Trump Show’ and it’s very well written.”[25]

The NPR review said, “The overarching theme of Betrayal is that the former president hasn’t just flirted with challenging the 2020 election result, he’s obsessively focused on it and campaigned for months to make it happen. These efforts began well before Election Day and continued well after the constitutional process had been completed and Trump’s opponents had been elected and inaugurated as president.” The review adds, “As a longtime television reporter, ABC News’ Washington correspondent Jonathan Karl brings an eye for life with as presented on screen, which is entirely appropriate for the Trump saga.”[26]

The New York Times book review said the book was “less revealing about the Trump White House and more revealing of Karl’s own gradual, extremely belated realization that something might actually be going wrong at the White House.” Karl had complained in his 2020 book that “mainstream media coverage of Donald Trump is unrelentingly and exhaustively negative.” He acknowledged in his new book that Trump’s “lies became deadly and shook the foundations of our democracy.” The book provides an inside look at the Trump White House, including information on memos by Adjutant John McEntee (political aide), “who went from carrying President Trump’s bags to director of the President’s Office of Human Resources – responsible for the hiring and firing of more than 4,000 political appointments across the federal government.’” In the messages, McEntee insisted that Vice President Mike Pence “had the authority to overturn the results of the November election” and that Secretary of Defense Mark Esper should be fired.[19]

Karl released audio recordings from his March 2021 Trump interview for the book, in which Trump defended the “Hang Mike Pence” chants by insurgents during the Jan. 6, 2021 attack on the United States Capitol as “understandable,” since Pence failed to overturn the 2020 election results as requested.[27]

Awards[edit]

Karl has twice received the Joan Shorenstein Barone Award for Outstanding Achievement in Washington, D.C. resident reporting – in 2010 and 2015,[7][28] a 2013 Walter Cronkite Award for National Individual Achievement, a 2009 Emmy Award for his coverage of the presidential inauguration of Barack Obama, and the Everett McKinley Dirksen Award from the National Press Foundation in 2001. [29]

In 2021, Karl received the Merriman Smith Memorial Award for Excellence in Presidential News Coverage for his coverage of Donald Trump’s contraction of COVID-19.[30]
