In 2000, Rosengart served as a litigator for the Justice Department’s Campaign Finance Task Force, headed by Attorney General Janet Reno. Rosengart worked on the United States v. James Riady case, in which Riady, an Indonesian billionaire, was accused of conspiracy to defraud the US for illegal campaign contributions. Rosengart conducted a money laundering investigation and obtained a felony conviction against Riady and secured a fine of $8.6 million – the highest fine for campaign finance at the time.[15][5] The head of the Campaign Funding Task Force was now US District Judge Robert J. Conrad, who said, “Matt Rosengart is one of the brightest attorneys I have ever met in the Justice Department,” whose “judgment is impeccable.”[1 ]
After his appointment as Senior Associate Independent Counsel in a case initiated at the request of then-US Attorney General Janet Reno, Rosengart represented the United States in United States of America, Appellee, v.
