Canadian ice hockey player

hockey player

Maxwell Johannes Domi (born March 2, 1995) is a Canadian professional ice hockey player for the Carolina Hurricanes of the National Hockey League (NHL). He was drafted 12th overall by the Phoenix Coyotes in the first round of the 2013 NHL Entry Draft.

Player career[ edit ]

amateur [edit]

He was selected by the Kingston Frontenacs with the eighth pick of the 2011 Ontario Hockey League (OHL) draft, but was subsequently traded to the London Knights for three second-round draft picks. In his OHL debut against Saginaw Spirit on September 23, 2011, Domi scored a hat trick and recorded an assist to lead the Knights to an 8–0 win. In the 2011-12 season, he won a bronze medal with Team Ontario at the 2012 World U-17 Hockey Challenge and helped the Knights win the 2012 OHL Championship. Domi was ranked as the top prospect, living up to a first-round pick in the 2013 NHL Entry Draft.[4]

In the 2012/13 season, Domi played with Team Canada to win a gold medal at the 2012 Ivan Hlinka Memorial Tournament, was an invitee at the 2013 CHL Top Prospects Game and led his London Knights team to capture their second OHL Championship Episode.[7][8] He was also part of the Canada team that won gold at the 2015 World Junior Ice Hockey Championships, was named the tournament’s top forward, and was named to the All-Star team.

Professional [edit]

Arizona coyotes[ edit ]

Domi was drafted 12th overall by the Phoenix Coyotes in the 2013 NHL Entry Draft. His father Tie had previously played for the franchise when it was still known as the Winnipeg Jets (the team moved to Phoenix in 1996). On July 14, 2013, Domi signed a three-year entry-level deal with Phoenix.[11]

Coyotes general manager Don Maloney corroborated fan speculation by saying he had acquired Anthony Duclair from the New York Rangers in hopes he would develop line chemistry with Domi. This was due to the fact that both Duclair and Domi showed visible chemistry during the 2015 World Junior Ice Hockey Championships and were key components in leading Team Canada to gold.[13]

In his debut NHL season, Domi developed instant line chemistry with Duclair, earning the duo the nickname “The Killer D’s.”[14] Domi notched his first career assist and first goal in his NHL debut against the Los Angeles Kings on October 9, 2015 against Jonathan Quick.[15] On January 12, 2016, Domi recorded his first career NHL hat trick against the Edmonton Oilers. Two of his goals came on the power play and defender Oliver Ekman-Larsson assisted on all three goals.[16][17]

Montreal Canadiens[ edit ]

On June 15, 2018, Domi was traded to the Montreal Canadiens in exchange for Alex Galchenyuk.[18] The following day, Domi signed a two-year, $6.3 million contract extension with Montreal.[19] In a preseason game against the Florida Panthers on September 19, Domi Sucker beat Panthers defenseman Aaron Ekblad, resulting in Domi’s suspension for the remainder of the preseason.

On October 3, 2018, Domi recorded two assists in the season opener as the Canadians lost 3–2 in overtime to the Toronto Maple Leafs. On October 17, Domi scored his first goal for Montreal in a 3-2 win over the St. Louis Blues.[22] He finished the 2018–19 season with 72 points, becoming the first player since Tomáš Plekanec in 2009–10 to score 70 points or more for the Canadians in a single season.

Columbus Blue Jackets[edit]

On October 6, 2020, Domi and a third-round pick in the 2020 NHL Entry Draft were traded to the Columbus Blue Jackets in exchange for forward Josh Anderson. On October 7, Domi signed a two-year, $10.6 million contract extension with the Blue Jackets.

Carolina hurricanes[ edit ]

During his final season with the Blue Jackets, Domi was traded by the Blue Jackets to the Carolina Hurricanes via the Florida Panthers in a three-team trade at NHL trade deadline on March 21, 2022. After scoring two goals and five assists in nineteen regular-season games with the Hurricanes, the team advanced to the 2022 Stanley Cup playoffs to face the Boston Bruins in the first round. Domi excelled in Game 7 by scoring two goals and providing a primary assist on a third in the team’s 3–2 series win over the Bruins. Many commentators called it the best game of Domi’s career up to that point.

Personal life[edit]

Domi was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba but grew up in Toronto, Ontario when his father, Tie Domi, was a member of the original Winnipeg Jets franchise.[9] Growing up, Domi’s favorite team was the Toronto Maple Leafs, in part due to his father’s many seasons at the club. Domi is of Albanian descent – his paternal grandparents immigrated to Canada during the wars and unrest in Albania.[28]

Domi has type 1 diabetes, which was diagnosed at age 12 after a hockey tournament in Detroit.[29] He regulates his blood sugar levels with an insulin pump attached to his waist. During games, he excuses himself every 15 minutes to test his blood sugar levels. Domi wore the number 16 while in Arizona in homage to Bobby Clarke, a famous hockey player who also suffered from the condition.[2] He moved to number 13 after a trade to Montreal for 16’s retirement and to pay tribute to his godfather Mats Sundin. Domi has a specially trained companion dog named Orion who wakes Max up when his blood sugar falls below a certain threshold at night.

In 2019, Domi and author Jim Lang published a book entitled No Days Off: My Life with Type 1 Diabetes and Journey to the NHL.[31]

International game[edit]

Domi represented Team Canada at the 2015 World Junior Ice Hockey Championships and won gold. Domi later made his senior national debut at the 2016 World Cup with Canada, winning gold.

Toronto Maple Leafs Whatever Happened to Tie Domi

Tie Domi is a record-breaking legend for the Toronto Maple Leafs. He played hockey in a way that today’s players might not understand. Some might say hockey has changed for the better, but in the fading enforcers era, Tie Domi was king.

Domi holds the NHL record for most fighting majors of his career with 333. He is the Toronto Maple Leafs’ all-time all-time leader in career penalty minutes and has the third most career penalty minutes in NHL history. (Some information from Wikipedia.org)

Tie Domi didn’t have the shooting talent to put many points on the board, but he had talent nonetheless. Before the 2004-05 lockout, NHL rules were very different. Player safety seemed less important than physically brutal entertainment.

In the days of Tie Domi, checks to the head were okay, blindside hits were okay, it was perfectly legal to check with your feet… Many NHL superstars suffered career-damaging injuries from it, and players who could harm talented players in this way , were often affected praised and rewarded.

When the rules didn’t want to protect the players, the players had to protect each other, and Domi was the great protector. If someone planned to injure a Toronto Maple Leafs player, they wouldn’t have to answer to the umpires or the NHL Player Safety Department (there were none until 2011), but to Tie Domi.

Toronto Maple Leafs draft pick, tie Domi

Tie Domi was drafted in the second round (27th overall) by the Toronto Maple Leafs in the 1988 NHL Entry Draft. Domi was selected after building his reputation as a finisher in his first full season with the Peterborough Petes of the OHL, recording 22 goals, 43 points and 292 penalties in 60 games.

He spent the 1989-90 season with the then Leafs farm team, the Newmarket Saints, and played his first two NHL games with the Toronto Maple Leafs. However, in the summer of 1990, Domi was traded with Mark LaForest to the New York Rangers for Greg Johnston. Johnston spent most of his time in the minors, playing only four games with the Leafs.

Domi would only play 82 games with the Rangers in three seasons. In December 1992 he was traded with Kris King to the Winnipeg Jets for Ed Olczyk. All three players involved in this trade were Toronto Maple Leafs during their careers.

With the Winnipeg Jets, Tie Domi was finally able to establish himself as a full-time NHL enforcer. In the 1992–93 season he played 61 games with 15 points and 344 penalty minutes (third most in the league).

During his first full season with the Jets in 1993-94, Domi led the NHL with 347 penalty minutes in 81 games. He would be voted the Winnipeg Jets’ favorite player that season. The next season, Tie Domi would be traded to the Toronto Maple Leafs for a 3rd round draft pick (Brad Isbister) and Mike Eastwood at the 1995 NHL Trade Deadline.

Tie Domi returns to the Toronto Maple Leafs

Born and raised in Windsor, Ontario, Tie Domi grew up idolizing another famous Toronto Maple Leafs enforcer, Dave “Tiger” Williams. Tie Domi surpassed Tiger Williams’ Toronto Maple Leafs franchise records for career penalty minutes (2265) and single-season penalty minutes with 365 during the 1997–98 season.

One of Tie Domi’s most controversial moments occurred during the first season of his return to the Toronto Maple Leafs when he beat Ulf Samuelsson and knocked him out. Samuelsson was notorious for intentionally making dirty plays with the intent to hurt.

Ulf Samuelsson’s “claim to fame” knocked Cam Neely out of the playoffs in 1991 with a knee-to-knee check. The injury caused Neely to contract myositis ossificans, which limited the superstar to just 22 games over the next two seasons and ultimately ended his career.

I remember watching the Domi/Samuelsson incident live on TV when I was 12 years old. It looked like Domi and Samuelsson were quietly chatting in front of the Rangers net and watching the game when, out of nowhere, Domi tucks a glove under his arm to take it off, giving Samuelsson a knockout with a punch to the face offset.

Samuelsson had taunted Domi for starting a fight and called him a “dummy”. Domi was suspended for eight games (he rarely missed games unless he was suspended) and apparently got Cam Neely’s approval as well.

Another famous incident happened in 2001 when Tie Domi was verbally abused by a Philadelphia spectator while he was in the box. Domi had enough of heckling and splashed the guy with a water bottle.

The Flyers fan started climbing over the glass as it subsided and fell into the crate on top of Domi. Domi started throwing punches and received the maximum fine of $1000 but was not suspended.

When Tie Domi’s contract expired in 2002, the Toronto Maple Leafs traded his rights to the Nashville Predators for an 8th-round draft pick (Shaun Landolt) days before the free agent term began. Tie Domi would step down with Toronto two weeks later.

I remember hearing at the time that Tie Domi had a clause in his contract that paid out a big bonus if he scored 10 or more goals in a season. He scored 13 goals in 2000/01 but fell short with 9 goals in 2001/02. In 2002/03 he had career-high goals and points with 15 goals and 29 points in 79 games.

Tie Domi to the Toronto Maple Leafs

After the 2004/05 lockout, a lot has changed in the ice hockey world. The era of enforcers was coming to an end. Partly because of the new rule changes and partly because the new salary cap didn’t leave much room for players who didn’t score.

The Toronto Maple Leafs cut many greats when the salary cap was introduced, including Alexander Mogilny, Gary Roberts, Brian Leetch, Joe Nieuwendyk, Owen Nolan, Ron Francis, Mikael Renberg and Robert Reichel. A year later, they bought out Tie Domi’s contract.

I remember hearing that Tie Domi was offered a contract by the Pittsburgh Penguins, but Tie Domi decided to retire at the age of 36 rather than play for a team that wasn’t the Toronto Maple Leafs.

Domi soon accepted a broadcasting position at TSN, but it only lasted a few weeks. He also took part in the CBC reality series Battle of the Blades, which pits former ice hockey players against each other in a figure skating competition.

Tie Domi has two daughters and his son Max Domi has played in seven NHL seasons for the Arizona Coyotes, Montreal Canadiens and Columbus Blue Jackets. I’ve seen Max play for the OHL’s London Knights and Tie’s been to the games a lot. Many Tie Domi fans dream of a day when Max Domi could live his father’s legacy anew by joining the Toronto Maple Leafs.
