Georgia Native Meg Jones Finds Tremendous Pride In Choosing To Support Military Community 24-7

This article originally appeared in the April 2019 issue of Homeland Magazine and is republished with permission.

After earning a bachelor’s degree in early childhood education from Dalton State College in her hometown in 2010, Meg Garrison never imagined that two years later she would embark on a new path that would see her spend her life in 24-hour military service . But that’s exactly the life this selfless Georgian native chose for herself after she came to the rescue of an injured childhood friend in need.

Garrison is now Meg Jones, wife of combat-wounded U.S. Marine Staff Sergeant and EOD Technician (Ret.) Johnny “Joey” Jones. She is also stepmother to nine-year-old Joseph Jones and program director of the Texas-based national military non-profit Boot Campaign.

Meg met her future husband at Southeast High School in Dalton in 2003 and after graduating she went to college and he set out on a career in the Marines. Meg and Joey were not in a relationship on August 6, 2010 when Joey stepped on an improvised explosive device (IED) in Afghanistan, resulting in the loss of both his legs above the knee and sustained severe damage to his right forearm and both wrists.

After learning of the injury, Meg found herself in Washington D.C. again and began helping Joey get through two grueling years of recovery at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center. The couple married at Marine Corps Barracks 8th & I in the nation’s capital in 2012, and since then she’s enjoyed rapid and furious training in the military community.

“Since Joey and I weren’t dating at the time of his injury, I had no experience of the military community or the lifestyle,” Jones recalled. “During his recovery, I not only quickly learned how to care for an amputee, but also learned about the lifestyle and structure of the military. Luckily I had the wives of EOD technicians Caroll Tarter and Sarah Lucas to mentor and guide me through this process. Without their friendship and guidance I would have really struggled.”

According to her husband Joey, it was a phone call he made looking for inspiration that brought the two back together – a phone call he will forever be grateful Meg answered.

“When I got hurt, Meg was little more than an ex-girlfriend; We hardly explored a friendship,” recalls Joey, a frequent national television commentator for US news and world events. “I phoned her on a whim from Germany two days after my injury so she might come visit and cheer me up. She came a few days later and has been by my side for nine years. The love and patience she has shown towards our partnership is beyond words and she truly is my rock.”

Though her grandfather, Lloyd Keith, was a US Army veteran of World War II, and her father, Allan Garrison, was a first lieutenant and “Huey” helicopter pilot for the army in Vietnam, Jones says she never fully understood her “dad’s” military life and “Dad” witnessed how no details were shared with her when she was young.

“My dad didn’t really talk about service until Joey got hurt,” Jones explains. “He told us it was just part of his past and seemed so long ago that it didn’t seem relevant to talk about it much. Joey’s injury opened up a whole page about my father that none of us, not even my mother, knew existed. We have a much better understanding now and actually saw footage he shot during his 1972 tour in Vietnam.”

While she’s always been 100 percent committed to the new direction of her future, the transition hasn’t been as easy or smooth as some might think.

“As the wife of a Marine, it’s difficult to find civilian friends who understand and can understand the experiences and challenges that we face every day as a family and that our spouses have gone through,” she confides. “Often our friends who get it are across the country, so creating remote support systems is critical.”

Supporting her stepson, Joseph, was also high on her new priority list, especially after she majored in early childhood education and began her career at a small nonprofit that developed materials for children and ran a children’s initiative. Though there have been ups and downs, she treasures her relationship with Joseph and considers it a blessing.

“Joseph is Joey’s mini double and brings so much joy into our lives,” beams Jones. “Joey and I are always looking for new and exciting things to do as a family with Joseph and we treasure our time with him.

“The hardest time was last year when Joseph shared that another third grader made fun of his father because he didn’t have legs,” she explains. “Fortunately, his school has a wonderful support system and sat down with all the students in his classroom to discuss the issue and allow Joseph to explain to his classmates what happened to his father.”

She says the situation also reminded her how special and strong military children in general can be, no matter the uncontrollable circumstances that come their way.

“For me, the incident at school with Joseph was a very enlightening moment to see how resilient he was and how well he handled the situation,” Jones says. “Military kids are some of the most dynamic people I’ve ever met.

“Your ability to adapt to new situations and environments while being comfortable with constantly meeting new people is something that should be admired by all,” she continues. “Second, the incident reminded me of the importance of the work I participate in with Boot Campaign, which is spreading the message of service, sacrifice and patriotism from military families across the country.”

The Jones family first learned about Boot Campaign when they heard a 2011 XM radio interview with Joe Nichols, a country music artist and celebrity Boot Campaign ambassador. Eventually, both Joey and Meg worked full-time for Boot Campaign. Joey most recently served as Chief Operating Officer until moving to other companies in 2017 and Meg currently serves as Program Director.

“The Boot Campaign staff were one of the first organizations to treat Joey and I like we were just ‘normal’ people after an injury,” Jones admits. “They haven’t looked at us and seen a couple trying to find their new normal, which is a common notion in the injured service member community. For the Boot Campaign, we were just Joey and Meg, and they attracted us because their staff and supporters exuded genuine patriotism.”

As program director of the Boot Campaign, Jones is at the forefront of the organization’s service and awareness programs for veterans. She ensures candidates receive treatment under Boot Campaign’s revolutionary health and wellness program, ensures veterans’ families receive gifts and support through the Santa Boots program during the holidays, and encourages the public to “lace up.” You America!” by purchasing Boot Campaign combat boots.

“It’s an honor for me to be able to alleviate some of the stress and frustration that many veterans experience dealing with their healthcare and the holidays,” Jones said. “Every time a veteran shares the news that the service we’ve provided was better than they’ve ever experienced, I know I’m doing the right thing and making a difference. It’s the least I can do to make some part of their lives easier during or after service.”

Adds her husband Joey, “As the daughter of a Vietnam veteran and wife of a combat amputee, Meg truly embodies the virtues we hold dear in this country: love, hope and compassion. I love my wife selfishly, but I’m proud to selflessly share her with such an amazing cause.”

Jones is immensely proud of the organization she represents and confident that she and her colleagues will continue to ignite patriotism to provide life-enhancing programs for veterans and military families across the country.

“Boot Campaign is like no other military nonprofit I’ve encountered as a military wife,” says Jones. “Our employees, supporters and partners genuinely care about the welfare of those who serve and have served.

“If you’re looking for help or resources, don’t be nervous about reaching out and seeking support,” reminds Jones. “Taking care of ‘YOU’ is the most important thing you can do for your family and yourself.”
