Michael Lang, one of the creators of the Woodstock Festival, which drew more than 400,000 people to a farm in upstate New York for a weekend of “peace and music” in 1969 — plus lots of drugs, skinny dipping, mud-soaked parties and freeway congestion — what led to one of the great tableaux of 20th-century pop culture, died Saturday in a Manhattan hospital. He was 77.
Michael Pagnotta, a spokesman for Mr Lang’s family, said the cause was non-Hodgkin lymphoma.
In August 1969, Mr. Lang was a baby-faced 24-year-old with limited experience as a concert promoter when he and three partners, Artie Kornfeld, John P. Roberts and Joel Rosenman, hosted the Woodstock Music and Art Fair in the country, which was run by a dairy farmer, Max Yasgur, in idyllic Bethel, N.Y., about 100 miles northwest of New York City.
Since Monterey Pop in California two years ago, rock festivals had sprung up across the country, and the Woodstock partners, all in their 20s, were ambitious enough to hope for 50,000 visitors. Mr. Lang and Mr. Kornfeld, a record executive, booked a solid line-up including Creedence Clearwater Revival, the Jimi Hendrix Experience, Jefferson Airplane, Janis Joplin and a new group called Crosby, Stills & Nash (that would be them at the festival accompanied by Neil Young). The show was scheduled for August 15-17.

Michael Scott Lang (December 11, 1944 – January 8, 2022)[1] was an American concert promoter, producer and artistic manager best known for co-founding the Woodstock Music & Art Festival in 1969.[2] Lang served as organizer of the event[3][4] as well as organizer of the follow-up events Woodstock ’94 and the ill-fated Woodstock ’99.[3] He later became a producer of records, films and other concerts and manager of performing artists, a critically acclaimed author and sculptor.
Early life[edit]
Lang was born in Brooklyn to a Jewish family.[5][6][7][8] In 1967, Lang dropped out of New York University and moved to Coconut Grove, Florida to open a head shop. In 1968, after promoting a series of concert venues in the Miami area (with Marshall Brevetz), Lang produced the 1968 Pop & Underground Festival. It drew about 25,000 people on the first day (May 18) and featured Jimi Hendrix, Frank Zappa, John Lee Hooker, Arthur Brown and Blue Cheer. In the afternoon of the second day (May 19th) it started to rain and the event ended early.

Woodstock Festivals 1969, 1994, 1999, 2019 [ edit ]
After moving to Woodstock, New York and meeting Artie Kornfeld, the two developed the concept for a major festival to celebrate the social movements of the 1960s and made plans to open a recording studio in the town of Woodstock. With Kornfeld and partners John P. Roberts and Joel Rosenman, Lang initiated planning for the Woodstock Festival, held August 15–18, 1969 at Max Yasgur’s farm in Bethel, New York.
Michael Lang was featured in many scenes of the 1970 documentary Woodstock: 3 Days of Peace & Music.
Lang also produced Woodstock ’94 with partners Roberts, Rosenman and co-producer John Scher, and Woodstock ’99 with John Scher and Ossie Kilkenny. Unlike the previous Woodstock festivals that Lang organized, Woodstock ’99 proved more chaotic and violent.
In May 2014, Lang revealed plans for a possible fiftieth anniversary of the first Woodstock concert to be held in 2019 and that he was exploring different locations.
On January 9, 2019, Lang announced that the official Woodstock 50 Festival would be held August 16-18, 2019 in Watkins Glen, New York. However, the event was canceled after encountering many logistical issues, financial support problems and three venue changes.[12]
Altamont free concert [ edit ]
Lang was not among the producers of the December 6, 1969 Altamont Free Concert, which some had dubbed “Woodstock West”. However, Lang was asked by the Rolling Stones and the Grateful Dead to help with a last-minute move from Sears Point Raceway to Altamont Speedway near Tracy, California.
Originally scheduled for Golden Gate Park, the concert was to feature The Rolling Stones, Grateful Dead, Santana, Jefferson Airplane, The Flying Burrito Brothers and Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young. The City of San Francisco revoked permits for the Golden Gate venue, allegedly due to a San Francisco 49ers football game at Kezar Stadium being located in the park on the scheduled date. The concert was then moved to Sears Point Raceway. However, a dispute over film rights led to its cancellation. Grateful Dead managers Lang and Rock Scully were then offered Altamont Speedway – a rival of Sears Point Raceway – by owner Dick Carter. With the venue for the concert settled, Lang showed up with his experience moving the much larger Woodstock festival. The venue was changed to the circuit on December 4th, with the concert starting on December 6th.
The change of venue caused major technical problems, including a stage that was built too low and close to the fans. The Hells Angels were then hired for stage security, leading to numerous fights with concert goers as well as an onstage altercation with members of the Jefferson Airplane, during which lead singer Marty Balin was punched and knocked unconscious. Audience member Meredith Hunter was stabbed and killed when he stormed onto the stage with a gun while the Rolling Stones were performing. These incidents were filmed and appear in the Maysles Brothers documentary Gimme Shelter. Among the 300,000 people there were also three accidental deaths.
Lang can be seen in the film. Lang appears last on stage and walks away during the onstage scuffle between the Hells Angels and the Jefferson Airplane.
Just Sunshine Records[edit]
Lang owned and operated Just Sunshine Records, which produced and released more than 40 albums by musicians as diverse as Karen Dalton, Betty Davis and Mississippi Fred McDowell. Lang also managed several successful international recording artists including Joe Cocker, Rickie Lee Jones, Willy DeVille, Tarkan and Spanish recording artist El Ultimo de la Fila. The label was active from 1971 to 1974 and was distributed by Gulf & Western’s Famous Music Group.
Joe Cocker[edit]
Shortly after the 1969 Woodstock Music And Arts Fair, Michael began managing Joe Cocker, who was performing at the original Woodstock concert. Their professional relationship lasted more than 20 years. Lang appeared in Cocker’s “You Can Leave Your Hat On” music video as one of the trumpet players.
Later years[edit]
Lang was an associate producer of Wes Anderson’s 1996 film Bottle Rocket.[14]
The Michael Lang Organization (MLO) includes live event production, film production and artist management. Projects included a Lincoln Center 50th Anniversary event with French theater company Royal de luxe; a Woodstock 50th anniversary event planned for summer 2019, which was ultimately cancelled; a film version of the cult classic The Master and Margarita; and theater projects in Turkey and South Korea. Additionally, Lang developed future projects with his partners at Woodstock Ventures, including a Broadway musical based on the Woodstock musical and a Woodstock lifestyle brand.
MLO has collaborated with the following artists: Outkast, Prince, Missy Elliott, Snoop Dogg, Steely Dan, The Fugees, Wyclef Jean, Tarkan, Shakira, Madonna, Norah Jones, Marc Anthony, Twista, Dave Matthews, Bruce Springsteen, Alicia Keys, Kid Rock, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Christina Aguilera, Linkin Park, Avril Lavigne, and Joe Cocker.[15]
In 2009, Woodstock Ventures (Michael Lang, Joel Rosenman and the estate of John Roberts) formed a joint venture with Sony Music Entertainment and launched a new woodstock.com.[16] The site celebrates the history of the original Woodstock festivals.
