2020 was a year of surprises — For MSNBC’s Elise Jordan, the best was yet to come

Of any day of the year, it is fitting that MSNBC political analyst Elise Jordan should give birth on Election Day.

“I was kind of like, ‘Oh, well, if I have to be in labor late, I can look at the election results,'” Jordan said.

But the year 2020 is not going according to plan. Instead, she gave birth to her first child, daughter Mary Clyde, two weeks early. While Jordan is quick to acknowledge that her experience over the past 10 months has been easier than many, being pregnant and giving birth during the pandemic has its challenges — and, as Jordan sees it, its rewards.

“The pandemic has been good for encouraging patience, considering I’m usually a very impatient person,” Jordan said. “That time has been about preparing for what you can and can’t change, which is quite a lot.”

She could never have anticipated how the year would roll back in March before the reality of the virus’ dangers gripped the country. Newly pregnant, Jordan asked her doctor if she and her husband should still go on a family ski trip in Colorado.

“People were talking about the pandemic, but it hadn’t really hit yet,” Jordan recalled. “And [the doctor] said, ‘Well, you can go to Colorado. It will be the last trip you will take for a long, long time.'”

In fact, that happily ever after in early March was the last time Jordan saw her Mississippi family, along with her final meal at the restaurant and her final trip to 30 Rock, the site from which she frequently aired on MSNBC and NBC. Like many others, she now works from home, makes frequent television appearances, and writes a history of women during World War II.

“It was scary, just all the unknowns,” Jordan recalled living in New York City in the spring as coronavirus cases were surging. “They didn’t really know the impact of Covid-19 on a developing baby.” She and her husband and dog left their Tribeca apartment to settle down at their home in Sag Harbor, three hours east. When she gave birth in mid-October, she was grateful for a relative lull in case numbers. But that prospect was tested when she went to the hospital where Mary Clyde would be born a day before a caesarean section that was scheduled after Jordan found out she had placenta previa.

“The day before my surgery we had to go to the Covid-19 tent at Mount Sinai and get tested. And so you stand in this long line in the rain with people, some people being tested for surgery like you, some people who are really, really sick, and you can just see how sick they are,” Jordan said. “I was like, ‘I’ve been so careful and super isolated throughout the pandemic and please I don’t want to get coronavirus before giving birth today.'”

Her husband was a comforting presence at an anxiety-provoking time, pointing out that the hospital’s medical staff had months to figure out the best way to test incoming patients.

It wasn’t the only time her husband proved to be “the best patient advocate” in the hospital setting. They were both aware that placenta previa put Jordan at risk for complications during labor. An hour and a half after the cesarean, she said loudly that she could feel the doctors operating on her.

“‘You know, I think I feel something,'” she recalled, “and my husband said, ‘When she says she feels something … she’s too polite and very southern and now gives her more no matter what drugs . ‘”

As of October, there was no dispute over whether a woman could have someone with her in the delivery room to assist during labor. But for a brief period in March, two major hospitals banned their partners from being present amid a worsening Covid-19 outbreak in the city. After an outcry from expectant mothers and patient rights advocates, the governor’s office issued an executive order requiring all hospitals in New York to allow women to have a partner in the room during labor and delivery.

“I didn’t realize how outrageous it is not to have your person with you until I was actually in the room,” Jordan said. “Obviously, in the abstract, you know you want your significant other with you. But day after day…you want that person, your greatest cheerleader and champion, with you.”

Jordan and her husband figure out the ins and outs of new parenthood with the help of a baby nurse who lives with them during Mary Clyde’s first few months, a woman who compares Jordan to a “surrogate grandmother” for Mary Clyde. Meanwhile, her 8-year-old corgi, Bobby Sneakers, finds out what it’s like to share the house with a new baby.

“His standing in life might be a little lower in the household hierarchy,” admitted Jordan. While Bobby Sneakers has obviously taken a liking to his new little sister, he doesn’t appreciate everything about her presence. “He just gets annoyed when she cries at night and just looks at me like, ‘Why is she doing that?’ And so it’s funny that the loudest little dog that keeps barking thinks he’s the only one supposed to do it Noise, but now he has another noisemaker to contend with.”

While Jordan anticipated the joyful spirit that her daughter would bring during these fall and winter months, she is especially grateful for the unexpected sense of hope that the birth of her daughter has instilled in her during these trying times.

“Giving birth during a pandemic brings you light at this time of hopelessness,” she said. “And it’s the most incredible expression of hope there is, in believing in the future and believing in all the good and promise that is in the world. So I feel fortunate that in this time of many depressing news and hopelessness, you see this incredible life that brings us so much joy right away. And you can see the promise of the world just a little bit revealed.”
