My complete advice for aspiring models is too extensive to list here, but I’ll sum it all up in two words: quality and consistency. If you believe in yourself and consistently work towards making and publishing quality work, people will notice you. They don’t want to be lumped in with the group of models who are constantly posting raw and watermarked images (reflecting that they didn’t pay for the final retouches), posting low-quality blurry photos, and are ready to go with anyone take pictures who has a camera. Today we would like to introduce you to Najma Shy.
Najma, can you walk us through your story briefly – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I moved to Atlanta five years ago to attend Oglethorpe University and had no intention of starting my own entrepreneurial pursuits while I was in high school. During my freshman year, I noticed that there were students on campus who needed help maintaining their natural hair and curls. I started helping them personally as I was reluctant to charge for my services.
If I worked up the courage to charge a fee, I would provide services for $15 to $30 for two hours. After a while I felt drained and didn’t feel like I was being fairly rewarded for the quality I was offering. With encouragement from a few good friends, I increased my prices and began marketing my business as Styled By Naj (@styledbynaj on Instagram) both on campus and in the greater Atlanta area as I would venture off campus. Now, even after graduation, I have a healthy flow of clients on campus and everywhere.
I also ventured into modeling during my student days. One day during my senior year I was walking through Little Five Points when a random guy stopped me and asked if I’d ever modeled before. I chuckled because I thought I looked a mess that day, but I consented to him snapping a few shots of me on the spot. I loved her. The rest is history. I knew I had potential and I refuse to let it go to waste. All to say that Atlanta is THE place to start your business ventures and meet people who will inspire you to take new steps in a more fulfilling direction.
Was it relatively smooth overall? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Modeling is fun. Acting is fun. But it is also work and there are many times when you are tired of your next steps as this is an industry of rejection. If you do it for fun you have the privilege of avoiding it, but once you go for castings you will face rejection quite a few times. You never know what directors are looking for, and it’s up to you to shake off and move on with the same confidence you did it with.
If you are not already supported by your parents or a spouse or sponsor, you are financially responsible for funding your outfits for shoots, quality photo shoots, travel expenses, sedcards, headshots, etc. You are your own business and you have to consistently invest in yourself to see real growth. This is where your network comes into play. I’ve been fortunate to shoot with some respected photographers because I’m not afraid to build those relationships and reach out to those whose work I admire. You must be your number one advocate, even if you have an agent
Please tell us more about your work, what you are currently focusing on and what you are most proud of.
I would say I’m a jack of all trades but my main focus right now is to brand myself as an actress and model and to grow my brand and online following. Most of the opportunities that come my way come through my Instagram, and as my followers grow, so do the opportunities. I specialize in commercial modeling but as I branch out I want to walk in fashion shows and find my niche once I’ve explored working in different fields.
Something that typically sets me apart is my hair, my height and my ability to help creative people bring their visions to life. Standing at 5’11 with a head full of long locs gives me a signature look, but more importantly, having a strong work ethic and being able to see through and execute on the creative vision. In just over a year as a model, I’ve developed the skills and confidence to do so.
We’re interested in hearing your thoughts on women’s leadership – specifically, what do you think are the biggest barriers or obstacles?
I think the market is definitely saturated. There are so many young women who call themselves models, but what separates those who make it is who they know and the quality of their work. Luckily, in the age of social media, it’s pretty easy to brand yourself and meet people you wouldn’t normally meet without the help of others. You just have to be consistent because when you’re not engaged, casting for gigs and developing your brand, another aspiring actress or model is.
