The Best San Diego Chargers Not in the Pro Football Hall of Fame (Defense)

As the American Football League took shape in 1959, Barron Hilton decided to give the AFL a franchise in Los Angeles. The Chargers were among the top teams straight away and made it to their first-ever AFL title game.
The city of Los Angeles had been Rams country since 1946. Legendary sportswriter Jerry Magee reached out to Hilton during the 1960 season to advocate for the wonders of the unknown area of San Diego.
After fewer than 10,000 watched the Chargers win their division, as opposed to 18,000 on opening day, Hilton decided to move the team.
The team continued their excellent game. They had one of the best offenses and defenses of that era, and Hall of Famer head coach Sid Gillman designed plays that made the Chargers more exciting than any other professional football team.
Often referred to as the “father of the modern offense,” Gillman led the Chargers to five division titles. When his Chargers won the crown in 1963, the only championship in franchise history, he challenged NFL Commissioner Pete Rozelle to a game against NFL Champion Chicago Bears.
Although Rozelle declined, the seeds were sown and the champions of both leagues would meet after the 1966 season. Gillman remained with the Chargers her entire time in the AFL, a feat only accomplished by Kansas City Chiefs Hall of Famer Hank Stram.
The early days of the NFL were tough for the Chargers, but things began to change in 1975 when the team had what was arguably the best single draft in franchise history. They snapped up Hall of Famer Fred Dean along with Pro Bowlers Gary “Big Hands” Johnson and Louie Kelcher to form one of the league’s best defensive lines.
They also drafted Mike Williams and Mike Fuller, who would excel on their defensive secondary and special teams for many years.
Billy Shields, Rickey Young, and Ralph Perretta, also drafted by San Diego in 1975, also contributed powerfully to the offensive line for several years.
Then, early in the 1978 season, San Diego brought in Don Coryell as head coach. “Air Coryell” was soon born, an offense some consider the most exciting in NFL history. Coryell also had ties to Gillman, having attended several Chargers practices while training at nearby San Diego State University.
Although Coryell put together some great teams, owner frugality quickly destroyed it and several players won with other teams. However, Coryell continued to win until his team began to age in 1986 when he was fired.
After the team took a few years and head coaches to rebuild, Bobby Ross took over in 1992 and immediately started winning. He only stayed five years before leaving, but Ross led the Chargers to their only Super Bowl appearance in 1994.
Since Ross left, Chargers fans have been on a rollercoaster ride again. Marty Schottenheimer was hired as head coach in 2002 and quickly went on to build a winner. The 2006 team won a franchise-record 14 games, but Schottenheimer often clashed with the front office.
Norv Turner replaced him in 2007 and won the AFC West three times. The team is rebuilding as it tries to stay competitive enough to hopefully give the Chargers their first championship since 1963.
The Chargers have fielded some of the most exciting teams in football history, especially on offense. Of the seven people their franchise has in the Pro Football Hall of Fame, five played offense.
Fred Dean is the only one on defense, although Junior Seau is set to change that soon. Many think there should be several more chargers anchored in Canton. Coryell should join Gillman for everything he has done for offensive systems that are still running today.
This is a team of the finest Chargers who are not, and may never be, members of the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

With a minute remaining at his own 3, Chargers linebacker Dennis Gibson led 17-13 and hit a fourth-down pass from Neil O’Donnell intended to run back Barry Foster, sealing a first-ever Journey to the Super Bowl in franchise history.
The Chargers entered the competition in Pittsburgh as strong underdogs. How confident were the Steelers that they would defeat the Chargers? Pittsburgh players had already hatched a plan for a Super Bowl rap video.
But Chargers defensive coordinator Bill Arnsparger put a stop to that with an effective game plan that bottled Pittsburgh’s strong running game for most of the day.
The Steelers dominated the game in the first half but only led 13-3. The Chargers were allowed to hang around and put on a run in the second half. Stan Humphries threw 43-yard touchdown passes to Alfred Pupunu and receiver Tony Martin, giving the Chargers all the points they needed.
The Steelers’ final drive began at their own 17-yard line. O’Donnell methodically marched Pittsburgh’s offense to the San Diego 3-yard line in 10 games. With Pittsburgh unable to lead football, O’Donnell was having one of his best days as a pro, completing 32 of 54 passes for 349 yards and a touchdown.
But in the deciding game in fourth place, O’Donnell never saw Gibson lurking behind Foster, who jumped ahead of the Pittsburgh running back to knock down the pass in the end zone, earning an unlikely win for the Chargers.
“You could see people crying as they walked out,” Gibson told U-T San Diego. “The emotional disappointment was overwhelming.”
More than 70,000 fans descended on Jack Murphy Stadium to celebrate with the team the following day.
