Nick Baumgartner Returns Home

3/5/14

Nick Baumgartner is happy to be home after attending the Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia last month.

IRON RIVER—On a dark country road, one of the world’s greatest athletes drives home alone. It’s past midnight and he’s been through a lot.

In the last two days, Nick Baumgartner has seen his dream of an Olympic medal dwindle, feeling the self-imposed burden of expectation weigh on his spirit. and he’s made a grueling 25-hour journey from Russia to Germany to Chicago and Green Bay, watching movie after movie to while away the time.

It’s likely that no one in his family — particularly his son Landon — will be awake when he pulls into his hometown. But maybe, just maybe, someone’s waiting for him.

“Basically, I can’t wait for my dog to freak out when she sees me walk in the door,” recalls Baumgartner.

When the 32-year-old Olympic snowboarder walks through the door of his childhood home, Bob and Mary are fast asleep. So Nick whispers and seeks the comfort of man’s best friend.

“Oakley, Oakley, come here, come here.”

But he only hears silence. No yelling, barking or yelling from his 4 year old black labrador. Oakley is with Landon at his mother Tina Sundelius’ home, and Baumgartner, just over a day after catching the eyes of Olympic fans around the world, might as well be invisible when the clock hits around 3am ticking.

So he steps back into the freezing cold and makes his way to his own home, where he’ll try to decompress enough to get a few hours of sleep…

As Baumgartner knows and will remember the next morning, he is not really alone. He has a close-knit family, a beloved son, and a community of well-wishers who are dying to see him. After all, this is home.

“I’ve said it a hundred times, the best part of every snowboard trip I take is coming back here to Michigan,” said Baumgartner. “I have so much support here and there are so many great people.”

He met these people again the next morning when he went with his father to Mr. T’s for breakfast. While Baumgartner expressed concern on his Facebook page at leaving his supporters at home after failing to get out of the heat at the men’s snowboard cross in Sochi, Russia, there was no such talk when he started meeting people around town.

Jill Sabotta, owner of Alice’s Supper Club, which hosted a fundraiser for Baumgartner before he left for Europe, said the last thing she wanted Baumgartner to feel guilty about was.

“Oh my god, it’s just not right to feel like this,” said Sabotta, who has known Baumgartner since he was a teenager. “He’s such an inspiration. How many people achieve something like this? We are very proud of him.”

Baumgartner said he’s reconsidered voicing his concerns publicly because he doesn’t want his fans to worry that he’s in any way messed up after the games. He insists he’s not, and given the schedule he’s on, one tends to believe him.

Really, he’s barely quit since he was back in the U.P. The weekend after his return, he attended his son’s basketball tournament in Hancock and began his post-Olympic speaking tour with an event at Houghton Elementary School last Wednesday.

All of these activities are anyway how Baumgartner approaches life. His eyes burn intensely even when he’s smiling and even when he’s so tired he can’t help but yawn. He speaks of his future in terms of “my next plan of attack.”

In short, he’s an adrenaline junkie who thrives on speed and action, a mindset that has helped him avoid the emptiness athletes often feel after peaking for a major competition.

“If I had two seconds to just relax and not go full throttle, I might feel it,” said Baumgartner. “But I never see that happen. It’s always on the go and I hope to make it on the go even more.”

In his hyperactivity, Baumgartner didn’t pause long enough to watch a replay of his race until nine days into that rainy morning in Sochi. When he finally did, he watched the video largely in silence. The race was largely lost when Baumgartner came up short and failed to clear the first jump. He temporarily stormed back into the race, but finished fourth in the five-man bobsleigh.

After the two-minute video ended, Baumgartner simply said, with his almost ever-present smile, “Yuk. I’ll never look at that again.”

Lest anyone think they’re devastated by the result, Baumgartner isn’t. He’s just not a half-empty guy. He said he was “super excited” about what he did, although he wished he had done better in Sochi. He is physically fit and looking forward to his next snowboard cross race on March 10th in Veysonnaz, Switzerland.

While many Olympic athletes stay for the closing ceremony, Baumgartner didn’t. Before leaving for Russia, he sat down with Landon and they agreed that Dad would fly back immediately.

So on February 19, the day after his race, he got up, made his way to the airport in the morning and made the long journey home to fulfill the promise he had made to his son who was worried about his safety.

“The media painted a picture [before the Olympics] of how dangerous it is over there. Unfortunately my 9 year old son saw it all. So we talked about it and I told him I’d be right home.”

Nick saw his boy for the first time the morning after his return. He went to Stambaugh Elementary School, where Landon is a fourth grader. Once at the school, Baumgartner strolled over to Landon’s classroom and knocked on the glass pane. Landon greeted his father with a smile and a bear hug.

“When things haven’t gone your way and you get a hug from your son, it makes everything better.”

The Olympic experience isn’t quite over for Nick and Landon. Baumgartner entered his son in a competition for the O.C. Tanner Inspiration Award. Baumgartner wrote a short story telling how his son inspires his athletic endeavors, and voters have responded. Nick and Landon walked away with the lead late last week. Landon had more than 228,000 votes, with its closest competitor in second place with about 113,000.

The competition ends on March 16th and the winner will receive a handmade 14k gold commemorative ring.

Over time, Baumgartner plans to continue his snowboarding career well into the future. He is aiming for a spot on his third Olympic team, the 2018 Games in Pyeonchang, South Korea. He also wants to continue his lectures and return to off-road truck racing, which he started in 2011.

Even if it all sounds exhausting, Baumgartner is driven by both an immense inner drive and great support from his hometown.

“I have so much strength and support. It’s hard not to go there every day and just give your all to try to bring some recognition back to this area. That gives you the drive you need.”

And so the attack continues.
