Where Is Raven Abaroa Today? Janet Abaroa Murder

Raven Abaroa was released from prison in 2017 after serving nearly eight years, Distractify reported.

It is believed that he returned to Utah after his release. His son Kaen lives with his grandparents Karyn Abaroa-Bolton and Jim Bolton.

Police linked Abaroa’s involvement in Janet’s murder after realizing her contact lenses were missing from the case.

Janet’s sister reported that she always removed her lenses before going to bed. However, Abaroa had told police that the last time he saw her, she was in bed watching television.

So the police exhumed her body and discovered that she was buried with her contact lenses at the time. Police also found other loopholes in Abaroa’s story.

For example, he told police that Janet was blue and her eyes open when he found her, but he told his friend that she was alive when he got home that evening.

After much investigation, Abaroa was arrested in 2010. In 2014, he filed a complaint of involuntary manslaughter and was sentenced to 95 to 123 months in prison.

Where is Raven Abaroa Now

ABC’ 20/20′ investigates the 2005 murder of Janet Abaroa to find scattered pieces of evidence that may have existed before the case ended. What the public probably didn’t expect was Raven Abaroa’s involvement in her murder.

Who is Raven Abaroa?

Raven Abaroa comes from a Mormon family and met Janet at Southern Virginia University. The two, who were soccer players, soon started dating. They married in 2000 and soon after moved to North Carolina, where they found work at the same sportswear company. Around this time, the couple had some marital problems. As it turns out, Raven Abaroa asked Janet for a divorce, claiming he cheated on her. However, the two decided to work on their marriage when they learned that Janet was pregnant. Janet had also expressed her issues with her family, stating that she did not want to raise her child as a single mother.

In any case, the couple soon had their son Kaiden. Around this time, Raven was caught stealing merchandise from her place of work, after which he pleaded guilty. Although he did not serve a prison sentence, Janet was too embarrassed to stay with the company and quit. In 2005, Raven called 911 and informed the operator that his wife had been shot. However, the police soon found out that Janet had been stabbed. In Abaroa’s 2007 interview, he said, “I was not involved in my wife’s death, and I did not kill my wife.” This was after there were stories that he might have murdered Janet.

Something wasn’t right

Shortly after Janet Abaroa’s death, Raven moved to Salt Lake City, Utah, along with Kaiden. Then he met Vanessa Pond, a single mother whose daughter went to the same daycare as Kaiden. At the time, Pond thought Abaroa was an honest man and decided to marry him. Despite confronting him about his wife’s death and other accusations and warnings from Janet’s sisters, Raven comforted her with the belief that his wife’s death was not his fault. In an interview, she said, “He had his stories about how people were trying to frame him, how awful the cops were, and how he kept trying to contact the police to find out what was going on.” Shortly after their wedding Raven was allegedly abusive towards Pond, and they eventually divorced in four months.

In 2010, Abaroa was arrested based on the new evidence found by Charles Sole, who was leading the investigation at the time. Detective Sole found that Janet’s contact lens case looked empty when he looked at crime scene photos. Speaking to Janet’s family, he found that Janet removed them very carefully before going to bed. So her body was exhumed and it was found that she was wearing her lenses at the time of her death.

After extensive research by Dr. Charles Zwerling with pigs wearing lenses and being buried, it was determined that the lens would age in the same way as Janet’s. He said: “I put on a lens cap that will be done at your funeral home. I used the same solutions – even the same linen. And I have these little caskets, these wooden boxes. And I put the pig eyes in there and actually buried them in my backyard. … And then, after six months, I exhumed the first box and so on.”

Where is Raven Abaroa now?

In 2013, Abaroa was tried, but a jury of 11-1 on a guilty verdict had the judge declare it a mistrial. In 2014, Abaroa filed a premeditated homicide motion for the second hearing in the case. The court sentenced him to 95 to 123 months in prison. The fact that he was in prison for four years before his trial was taken into account.

Why Raven Abaroa Is a Free Man Today and Where He Is Now

There were many reasons for police to suspect Abaroa of his wife’s murder – including a $500,000 life insurance policy and a suspiciously missing knife collection, as well as his recent arrest for embezzlement from the sporting goods store where the couple worked. But he also seemed to have a watertight alibi. He had been playing an evening soccer game with friends when the murder allegedly took place. Abaroa told police his wife was in bed watching TV when he left. The couple, both of whom grew up in the Church of Latter-day Saints, had spent time with a friend from their community before the game.

How Contact Lenses Helped Crack the 2005 Killing of Janet Abaroa

Where were her contact lenses?

Det. Charles Sole couldn’t get the question out of his mind. Almost five years had passed since the murder of 25-year-old Janet Abaroa, who was found stabbed to death on April 26, 2005 in her own home in Durham, North Carolina. At the time, she was the mother of one child and pregnant with a second.

The prime suspect? Her husband, Raven Abaroa, whose knife collection was oddly missing when police showed up at the home to investigate the crime and who authorities say made conflicting statements during his conversations with detectives.

But he had an alibi and investigators had no reason to contradict Raven’s story that he left his wife to get ready for bed when he went to play soccer with his buddies while their 6-month-old son Kaiden was deep and fast asleep in a room nearby.

The case had gone cold, but Sole, who had recently been assigned to investigate, was obsessed with one detail: where were Janet’s contact lenses?

“I noticed the contact case on the counter, the top rim of which suggested to me the likelihood that the contact lenses were probably not in it, which would conflict with her going to bed or, as Raven put it, going to bed sleep,” Sole told ABC’s 20/20 in an episode that airs Friday at 9 p.m.

This was backed up by interviews with Janet’s friends and family, who said she always took out her lenses before going to bed to watch TV.

The more he thought about it, the more Sole couldn’t shake the nagging thought that he knew where the contacts were: still in Janet’s eyes.

But he had to prove it.

New woman, new life

For years, suspicion swirled around Raven, who left Durham and moved to Salt Lake City, Utah with Kaiden shortly after Janet’s death.

There Raven, a Latter-day Saint who felt at home in Salt Lake City, met his second wife, Vanessa Pond, a single mother. Pond’s daughter went to the same daycare as Kaiden.

“He seemed very outspoken…very honest and genuine,” Pond told 20/20 of her first impression of Raven. “And I found out he was a single dad. And I really, really admired that.”

Raven told Pond that his first wife died, she said. She was initially a bit suspicious after reading local reports of Janet’s death online, but said when she asked Raven about it he “put every doubt out of my mind” and blamed Janet’s unsolved death on the police.

Three years after Janet’s death, in September 2008, Raven married Pond in an intimate backyard ceremony.

Concerned for Pond’s safety, Janet’s family contacted her. “We just wanted her to make sure she was aware of things that have been in the news about him,” said Janet’s sister, Dena Kendall. “That she knew what she was getting herself into.”

But by his own admission, Pond ignored her warning. “I didn’t want to believe at all… that he did that,” she said.

After they got married, Pond said she began to see a different side of Raven. “He could say the most horrible things,” Pond said. “And then, moments later, he would apologize.”

She claimed he was also physically aggressive and once pushed her against a wall, a claim Raven denies.

Pond added, “He was trying to convince me I tripped.”

Pond said she regretted the marriage almost immediately, but, as she would later testify, she was afraid of what might happen to her if she tried to leave Raven, so she tried to drive him off.

By Christmas 2008, just months after their wedding, they had separated and their marriage was eventually annulled.

In the spring of 2009, Pond publicly voiced the suspicion that had been building in her for months: Raven, she believed, had killed his first wife.

dig up clues

On February 1, 2010, Raven was arrested and charged with Janet’s murder.

Detectives had been building their case against Raven for the past five years from small pieces of evidence that accumulated over the weeks and months.

“Raven never kept the lies,” lead detective Sole told 20/20. “His testimony to law enforcement was initially contradictory.”

In addition to Raven’s allegedly conflicting statements about the night in question, as well as his missing knives, police pointed to the family’s financial problems, which were a result of Raven’s involvement in an embezzlement scheme.

Months before Janet’s death, the two had been forced to quit their jobs at a sporting goods company where they both worked after Raven was charged with multiple embezzlement charges of stealing thousands. The scandal put increasing strain on their marriage, police said. (Raven later pleaded guilty to these charges.)

Also, Raven had taken out a $500,000 life insurance policy for Janet, and even though they were unemployed and unable to pay rent, somehow the policy payments were always on time.

Raven had also allegedly cheated on Janet – the couple even split just a year before Janet’s death, her mother later testified. At the time, Janet was pregnant with Kaiden and terrified of becoming a single mother.

Also crucial was a video from a supermarket showing Raven wearing a different sweatshirt than what he said he was wearing when he went to play football, which wouldn’t make sense if, as he said, he would have come home to find his wife dead on the floor.

His claim that he hugged Janet when he spotted her was also questionable, according to police and prosecutors. Where, they wondered, was all that blood?

But the mystery of contact lenses ate at Sole. He called an eye doctor, Dr. Charles Zwerling.

“So what happened was a detective called me and asked, ‘Would it be possible to identify contact lenses from a body that was exhumed after five years?'” Zwerling later recalled to BuzzFeed News.

“I told him contacts break down, but never say never, I’m willing to try.”

In July 2010, Janet’s body was exhumed. In her eyes? Yellowed fragments of Acuvue contact lenses – the brand she always wore.

“They caught [Raven] in a lie,” Zwerling said.

“It’s not justice”

Raven’s first trial, which began in April 2013, ended in May 11-1 in favor of guilt.

Part of what made the case difficult was the lack of witnesses and a gun.

“His advantage was trying to say, ‘I’m just a bad husband. I’m a criminal when it comes to money, but there’s no [physical] evidence that I killed my wife,'” Durham District Attorney Charlene Coggins-Franks told NBC’s “Dateline” in 2014.

The circumstantial evidence was extensive, however, and before they could go to trial a second time, Raven entered what became known as the Alford plea for voluntary manslaughter, acknowledging there was enough evidence to convict him but admitting no guilt.

Janet’s family considered it a win.

“With this settlement today, after nearly nine years, Raven has finally admitted that he did, in fact, kill our beloved Janet,” they said in a statement at the time. “Not only did he kill Janet, but he knowingly killed his unborn child. No amount of jail time will ever bring justice to Janet or her unborn child.”

“… This request is not what we wanted, but with advice from lawyers and in cooperation with the family, we decided to support it – we would have preferred him to be locked up for life in a place where he could never hurt anyone again.”

But as she later told “20/20,” Pond, who appeared as a key witness during Raven’s first trial, was stunned.

“I was shocked by how the plea deal turned out,” Pond said. “It’s not justice at all. It’s not justice.”

Raven was eventually sentenced to 95 to 123 months (roughly eight to 10 years) in prison, counting time served before, during, and after the first trial.

Nearly 40-year-old Raven left prison on Christmas Day 2017 and returned to Utah, where he lives to this day. Raven and his attorney declined to comment on “20/20” for the special.

After his father’s arrest, Kaiden was placed with his paternal grandparents. It is unclear where he is today.
