Reggie Stephey Reggie Stephey today after Jacqui Saburido death

Reggie Stephey: Where is Reggie Stephey today after the death of Jacqui Saburido?

Reggie Stephey is the drunk driver who crashed into Jacqui Saburido, killing her two friends and serving 7 years in prison. Reggie Stephey is 38 years old today.

Jacqui Saburido died on April 20, 2019 after battling cancer at the age of 40.

Reggie Stephey:

The crash occurred on Sunday morning, September 19, 1999.

Jacqueline Saburido took a break from college when she came to the US to study English. She had been in Texas less than a month when the crash happened.

Jacqueline, then 20 years old, was walking home from a birthday party with four of her friends. Reggie Stephey, then 18 years old, was on his way home from drinking beer.

Reggie’s SUV crashed into Jacqueline’s Oldsmobile. Two of Jacqueline’s friends died at the scene. Within minutes, the Oldsmobile was on fire. Jacqueline was held in it.

Over 60% of her body was severely burned. Nobody thought Jacqui would survive. But she did.

Jacqui lost her fingers, hair, ears, nose, left eyelid and much of her sight. She’s had more than 50 surgeries since the crash.

Reggie was convicted of manslaughter for the deaths of Jacqui’s two friends. He was released from prison in 2008 after serving a full seven-year sentence.

Jacqui bravely allowed photos of herself after the accident to be used in media campaigns against drunk driving. She appeared on Oprah in 2003, and Oprah called her “a woman who defines survival.”

Amazingly, Jacqui Saburido publicly forgave Reggie Stephey even though his drunk driving had completely ruined her life.

Reggie Stephey reunited with Jacqui after serving his sentence

10 years after Jacqui’s crash, on August 14, 2009, Jacqueline Saburido met in San Antonio with Reggie Stephey, the man who caused the crash that disfigured her.

It was the first time they had seen each other since Reggie’s trial. They talked for more than an hour in a hotel room above the Riverwalk. When they’re done, neither of them will go into detail about what they talked about.

Reggie Stephey looked like a burdened man. With his lined face and stubbly chin, he looked older when he was 28 at the time.

He is reportedly trying to get his life back on track after nearly eight years in prison.

While in prison, he worked with Saburido on the drunk driving campaign, filming public service announcements and speaking to high schools. He was the other half of the equation, a walking cautionary tale.

Law enforcement officials say Stephey was almost as important to the campaign’s success as Saburido.

A high school football player with all-American looks, Stephey was someone potential drunk drivers could identify with.

After being released from prison in 2008, Stephey tried to piece the pieces of his own life together. He said in an interview at the time while hand-rolling cigarettes from a bag of Bugler tobacco:

“It’s a long road. I’m basically starting 10 years late when it comes to figuring out my place in the world.”

He enrolled at the University of Texas as a junior after earning associate degrees in philosophy and economics while in prison. He also worked part-time in construction.

Reggie said he will forever bear the burden of being responsible for two deaths and Saburido’s disfigurement. But he seemed determined to overcome the accident.

“It defined a large part of my life, but it doesn’t define who I am,” he said.

All Stephey said after meeting Saburido while she was in San Antonio in mid-August 2009 was:

“I think it went well. It was emotionally draining. I’m still blown away by it. … My struggles are nothing like the struggles Jacqui goes through on a daily basis.”

Biography of Jacqui Saburido:

Jacqui Saburido was born and raised in Caracas, Venezuela. As an only child, she lived with her father after her parents divorced. She loved going to the beach, dancing and hanging out with her friends.

Jacqui wanted to help her father run his air conditioning factory after she graduated from university with an industrial engineering degree. But first she wanted to learn to speak English.

Natalia Bennett and four others were walking home from a birthday party in Austin. Her passenger was Jacqui Saburido. It was just after 4 a.m. on Sunday, September 19, 1999.

Reggie Stephey, 18, was also on his way home. He had been drinking. Less than a mile from his driveway, Reggie drifted across the median and hit Natalia’s car head-on. Natalia Bennett and Laura Guerrero died at the scene.

Jacqui suffered third-degree burns to over 60 percent of her body after the car caught fire.

Reggie, the driver, was an Austin high school senior. A self-proclaimed athlete, he hoped to go to college on an athletic scholarship. Those dreams went away when he ended up drinking with friends and trying to drive home. He drifted over the center line and his SUV crashed into a car with five people in it.

Two of them died on the spot. Jacqui Saburido nearly burned to death when the car caught fire.

Reggie was convicted of two counts of manslaughter for intoxication and sentenced to seven years in state prison. He was released in 2008. His life will never be the same again.

The only thing Jacqui remembers about the crash is the whirring of the rotor blades of the helicopter that was supposed to take her to the hospital. Extensive third-degree burns seared her eyes and blinded her; melted her hair; took her ears, lips, nose and eyelids; and deprived them of the use of their hands.

The doctors did not expect that she would survive.

But she did.

Jacqui has had well over 100 surgeries since the crash. When her medical bills surpassed $5 million a few years ago, she lost track of the total costs. She has no health insurance.

The carefree, fun life that Jacqui once led as a teenager in Caracas is gone forever. Her looks and ability to live independently caught fire over a decade ago, as did her career and family plans.

She remained unsure of what her future held.

Amadeo Saburido, Jacqui’s father, has been by her side since the beginning. He left his business, home, and country to nurse Jacqui back to health and care for her. Days turned into months, months into years. He dressed her, bathed her and fed her. He was there before and after every operation.

Amadeo remained the most important person in her life.

At one of her many press conferences, Jacqui bravely said:

“Even if it means sitting here in front of a camera with no ears, no nose, no eyebrows, no hair, I will do it a thousand times if it helps someone make a wise decision.”

Her desire to spare others the horrors of her experience prompted Jacqui to get involved in the Texas Department of Transportation’s campaign to urge people not to drink and drive.

Since the accident, she has given dozens of interviews around the world. She’s even been on The Oprah Winfrey Show twice.

At last count, a BILLION people worldwide had heard her story.

Jacqui’s new life

Jacqui used to feel sorry for himself and cried every day – for five minutes. And then she went on with what she had to do. doctor appointments. operations. Therapy. Call friends. Travel. emails.

Over the years she regained some of her sight and her hands.

The life she had before her death was not the life she expected or ever wanted. But it was her life and she got used to it.

Jacqui received letters from children at school. People sent donations to cover the cost of their surgeries. She got greeting cards and stuffed animals. Children paint their pictures. People recognized her on the street and said hello.

Jacqui touched people and she was touched by their love and support.

Despite the many daily hardships she endures, her faith and many supporters motivated her to keep going.

Now that she is gone, may her soul rest in perfect peace.

Burn victims from Venezuela

Jacqueline Saburido (Spanish pronunciation: [ɟŹakeĖˆlin saĪ²uĖˆÉ¾iĆ°o]; December 20, 1978 ā€“ April 20, 2019) was a Venezuelan activist and burn victim who campaigned against drunk driving. After a car accident in 1999, Saburido suffered burns on 60% of her body; She continued to appear in drunk driving ads and was a twice guest on The Oprah Winfrey Show. She also unsuccessfully attempted to become Britain’s first face transplant patient.

Early life and accident[edit]

The only child of Rosalia and Amadeo Saburido, she lived her entire childhood in Caracas, Venezuela.[1] After her parents divorced, she lived with her father and studied engineering in hopes of taking over the family’s air conditioning business.[2]

On September 19, 1999, Saburido attended a birthday party near Austin, Texas. She and her friends left after a few hours and let a classmate drive them home.[3] Shortly after the ride, her 1990 Oldsmobile Ninety-Eight Regency was hit by a 1996 GMC Yukon being driven by Reginald Stephey, who was previously intoxicated.[4] The driver and one passenger of the vehicle she was in were killed, the other passengers injured; Of the three survivors, Saburido was the only one trapped in the car when it caught fire and was unable to escape the flames. Passing paramedics put out the fire and tried to remove people from the car,[3] but the fire reignited before they could rescue Saburido; they also lacked proper equipment to excise them. Forty-five seconds later, a fire engine arrived and completely extinguished the fire, after which Saburido was flown to the incineration unit in Galveston.

Saburido suffered second and third degree burns on more than 60% of her body, but survived despite her doctor’s expectations.[7] Her fingers had to be amputated, but there was enough bone left on her thumb to construct an opposable thumb. She lost her hair, ears, nose, lips, left eyelid and much of her sight. Saburido subsequently underwent more than 120 reconstructive surgeries, including corneal transplants, to restore her left eye.[8]

In June 2001, Stephey was convicted on two counts of drunk manslaughter.[9][10] Saburido and Stephey first met after his trial and conviction in 2001.[11] Saburido has stated that Stephey “completely destroyed my life” but forgave him. Regarding the meeting, Stephey later stated, “What comes to mind is, ‘Reggie, I don’t hate you.’ It’s really touching that someone can look you in the eye and feel so much compassion after everything I’ve caused.”[12]

Saburido was among 21 disfigured people who approached surgeons at a London hospital for Britain’s first face transplant; she was not selected.[13] She continued to look for other face transplant options in other countries and hospitals.[14][15]

Advocacy and media appearances[ edit ]

Saburido allowed the use of illustrative photos of himself in the media (posters, television advertisements and internet chain letters) after an accident to illustrate a possible outcome of drunk driving. She is best known for a commercial in which she held up a photo of herself before the crash, lowering the camera to reveal her disfigured face and saying, “This is me after being hit by a drunk driver When asked why she was in the campaign, Saburido said, “I feel really good about it because I know people can understand a little bit better what happened to me ā€” why my life is completely changing Has. So I think, for me, for everyone, it’s a good opportunity.ā€[16] To ensure that the material featuring Saburido, which was used in a Texas Department of Transportation advertising campaign, could also be used in schools, her recorded videos and photos with soft lighting to enhance their appearance and consulted with child psychologists to ensure that the material, while graphic, would not startle children.[16][17]

Regarding her life after the accident, Saburido said she never gave up: “If someone stumbles, they have to get up and keep going. I think that’s very important, otherwise life wouldn’t have any meaning.” She appeared on The Oprah Winfrey Show on November 17, 2003. On March 14, 2004, she was also interviewed in the Australian 60 Minutes and featured in a Discovery Health documentary about face transplants. Oprah Winfrey called Saburido the only person she met who defined “inner beauty” and that she is “a woman who defines survival”.[18]

When Stephey was released from the Huntsville Unit in Texas on June 24, 2008, Saburido stated, “I don’t hate him, I don’t feel bad about him being out, he can rebuild his life.”[19] On May 15, 2011, Saburido appeared in one of the final episodes of The Oprah Winfrey Show, dedicated to Winfrey’s favorite guests. Saburido revealed that she had undergone over 120 surgeries to date.[20]

death [edit]

Saburido died of cancer in Guatemala City on April 20, 2019.[3] Her family said she had moved to Guatemala a few years earlier to find better treatment for her illness. Saburido was buried in Caracas.[18]

According to the TxDOT Faces of Drunk Driving campaign, Saburido’s story was told to at least a billion people around the world up until her death.[21]
