The globetrotter ROSE THOMAS, 27, The Londoner. I started The Londoner a few years ago. I’d just graduated with a degree in advertising from Southampton Solent University and moved to London. I wanted to stay in touch with friends and family back home in Spain, where I grew up, and here in the UK.

A lot has happened in the last few months, but I’ll stick to the most pressing matter… we’ve moved to the other side of the world. In fact it feels as though we’ve moved to another planet. We’re in Australia and the culture shock has been pretty immense.

The Londoner

The last time I left you, we sped away from Villa Feltrinelli, out into the glittering sunset.

Veils blow in the wind, watch the lights dance on the water.

In the best of company.

Cared for by the hardest working bridesmaids.

For our guests, the party was already in full swing.

They had already ventured to the venue along with the groom.

I get off the boat onto the magical island of Lake Garda, a place I fell in love with years ago and couldn’t wait to share!

They had wandered through gardens lush with blooming roses, plump hydrangeas, exploding bougainvillea and avenues of fragrant citrus trees.

They left the shore of the lake, with its gently lapping waves and happily swaying ducks, for the Italian Gardens.

For Bellinis, spritzers, champagne and a bit of music.

All look incredibly polite in their black tie.

While they broke the ice, we sailed on.

The Ceremony Room is patiently waiting to be filled.

Beneath a ceiling of crumbling Italian frescoes, Nikki Tibbles created a wonderland.

My brief was that I wanted to feel as if the fabulous gardens below had crept into the room and refused to stay where they were supposed to be.

Nothing perfect, nothing symmetrical. Simply pure nature. (A beautiful thing is never perfect, remember.)

She couldn’t possibly have created anything more wonderful.

The most beautiful mix of native flowers & the ones I fondly remember from my childhood.

Some even crawled onto the pews.

Scented candles burned all around, mingling with the scent of the garden, flowers, and the cool evening breeze that danced in off the lake.

At the groom’s request, guests were asked to leave cameras and phones at home (partly for reasons of his own privacy and dislike of social media, but mostly for the privacy of his friends), but clever Nikki still set up the most fabulous photo booth.

A backdrop of blooms married to those already growing in the garden, for those who couldn’t resist snapping together in their splendor.

While the groom and guests sipped their cocktails, a boat full of excited girls pulled into the dock below.

I can’t tell you how excited I was to get there.

I was expecting to be nervous, but instead I was overwhelmed with joy and was dying to join in the fun!

We followed the avenue of candles in golden hurricane lanterns to the heart of the island.

Enjoyed one last toast as a single woman, with my hero.

And as the sky turned the softest shade of pink, I made my way to the altar.

I went through a collection of my closest friends, my family and my new family all beaming at me and whispering hello.

I clutched my father’s arm and slowly walked towards my future, waiting for me at the end of the aisle while tears ran into his smile.

Daddy gave me away, shook my husband-to-be’s hand and sat down next to the woman he had done all this with all those years before.

Roger Saul, a friend I’ve known since I was 3 and one of the happiest married people I know has done us the great honor of marrying us.

He managed the difficult balance between depth and meaning, seriousness and lightheartedness.

Much to our delight.

I’ve always thought that a wedding should be as much about the guests as it is about you. Lots of good food and drink goes without saying, but I wanted everyone to have something to take away from the ceremony. I think the best weddings are the ones where couples shake hands, snuggle a little further, and feel renewed in their bond with one another.

This was reflected in our readings.

Julia shared her wisdom about married life.

Read “The Art of Marriage” by Wilferd A. Peterson

Happiness in marriage is not something that just happens.

A good marriage must be created.

In the art of marriage, the little things are the big things…

It’s never too old to hold hands.

It means remembering to say “I love you” at least once a day.

It will never sleep angry.

It is at no time to take the other for granted;

The courtship shall not end with the honeymoon,

it should go on like this for years to come.

It is a shared understanding of values and common goals.

It stands together and faces the world.

It forms a circle of love that gathers in the whole family.

It’s about doing things for each other, not in attitude

of duty or sacrifice, but in the spirit of joy.

It speaks words of appreciation

and to show gratitude in a thoughtful way.

It doesn’t look for perfection in each other.

It cultivates flexibility, patience,

understanding and humor.

It has the ability to forgive and forget.

It gives each other an atmosphere where everyone can grow.

It finds room for the things of the spirit.

It is a shared search for the good and the beautiful.

It builds a relationship where independence is equal,

The dependency is mutual and the obligation is mutual.

It’s not just about marrying the right partner, it’s about being the right partner.

It is the discovery of what marriage at its best can be.

Mum read an article she had saved before I was born.

A recipe called bridal cake from a 1920’s cookbook.

It’s safe to say that there wasn’t a dry eye in the house!

And finally, Harry shared advice from someone dear to our hearts who couldn’t be there.

What I learned about love, I learned from my dog.

Don’t ever miss the opportunity to go for a spin together. Let the experience of fresh air and the wind on your face turn into pure ecstasy.

When your loved ones come home, always run to greet them.

If you want treats, practice obedience.

Let others know when they’ve invaded your territory.

Take a nap together and stretch before you get up.

Run, romp and play every day.

Be loyal.

If what you’re looking for is buried, dig until you find it.

If someone is having a bad day, shut up, sit nearby, and give them a gentle cuddle.

Benefit from the attention and let yourself be touched.

Avoid biting when a simple growl will do.

When you’re happy, dance around and wag your whole body.

No matter how many times you get scolded, don’t feel guilty and don’t sulk…

Run right back and make friends.

Enjoy the simple joy of a long walk together.

Love you unconditionally.

Commissioned by Custard.

Finally, it was time to take our vows.

Mine…

I choose you

be yourself

to love what I know about you and to have faith in who you will become.

I will always respect and honor you in every way.

I will be here

If you feel like being quiet

When you have to speak your mind

i will listen

And I’ll be here

When laughter turns to crying

By winning, losing and trying

We will be together

‘Cause I’ll be here

When the mirror tells us we’re older

i will hold you

And I’ll be here

To watch you grow

And tell you all the things that you are to me.

Remember tonight for it is the beginning of always.

His…

I choose you that you are none other than yourself,

to love what I know about you and to have faith in who you will become.

I will always respect and honor you in every way.

With you I vow to fix a little piece of the world.

I take you to my wife

to have and to keep

in tears and laughter,

in sickness and in health.

To love and cherish from this day forward, in this world and the next.

I will keep the promise I made

For you and for the one who gave you to me today.

And then my best friend all these years Mr. PJ van Sandwijk kissed his bride and became my husband!

With the formalities settled, it was time to celebrate!

There were many congratulations to bring.

A few more tears to shed and many a hug to be had.

Before descending into the gardens for drinks and nibbles.

Guests sipped cocktails while waiters circled trays of Italian classics, Sicilian red shrimp, seared tuna with pistachios, meats, cheeses, pastries, sandwiches, arancini, my personal favorite – fried sage leaves. You know me, nobody would go hungry at my wedding!

The caterers, Padovani Benuzzi, totally outdid themselves, everyone I’ve seen since the wedding has exclaimed that the dinner was one of the best they’ve had in Italy. What a crowd is not easy!

But more on the food later, some of us were way too excited to even think about the food!

The next two hours flew by. I was far too busy chatting up friends, thanking guests, and sipping cocktails to even notice my husband was nowhere to be found.

Apparently he was doing the same at the other end of the garden, with the other half of the congregation!

One of the reasons I wanted to have a small wedding, aside from the venue running out of space, was because all I had heard from recently married friends was that they didn’t get enough of the guests to see. That they never really got to spend time with anyone, which seemed a shame as I finally had a reason to finally get all my loved ones together. So we set out very early on to only invite 80 guests and we had to have seen them both within the last year.

It worked perfectly as I got a little time with absolutely everyone, and a sneaky seating plan meant every single guest left the island with at least one new friend.

And I had to selfishly spend time with some of my elders.

As we galloped around, my incredible wedding coordinator, Silvia, and her team worked behind the scenes.

And before we knew it, Harry – our master of ceremonies – was taking us to dinner.

As if by magic, our ceremony room had been transformed into the most beautiful of all restaurants.

Overlooking the lake and twinkling stars.

Nikki and her team decorated the tables with hedge sweethearts, fragrant roses, sweet peas and twining passion flower tendrils. All surrounding Aerin Amber Musks.

Vintage silver napkin rings held linen napkins and a different flower for each guest.

Climbing roses crawled up chairs.

And menus I designed to look like vintage botanical prints indicate your place at each table.

A lovely keepsake for anyone who wanted a keepsake.

No sooner had you finished your plate of spectacular risotto than an Italian waiter with a Dickie bow slung over your shoulder, a steaming tray of risotto in hand, and asked if you’d like more!

I wish so much I could go back and do it all over again. And this time in a looser dress!

Between courses we gave speeches.

Dad struck the perfect balance of heartfelt and funny, with the entire crowd hanging on his every word.

Complete with props!

Predictably, I cried the whole time.

Dinner sped by in a haze of happy chatter and a medley of wines to be sampled.

Thomas gave the most heartfelt speech imaginable.

And made a lot of friends along the way.

My husband gave a speech that moved every guest to tears, followed by a standing ovation.

And exactly at midnight, after such a sumptuous meal, we all led through the woods down to the water for a small, very light dessert.

Hm…

Millefoglie!

Yes, the traditional Italian wedding cake happens to be my favorite cake. Do you even have to wonder why we chose to get married there?!

We cut the cake to thunderous applause from our generous guests.

And it was taken away to be served with fresh berries and steaming cups of espresso.

We crossed a small bridge to the dance floor in the forest and had our first dance as husband and wife.

We danced to this if you want to get in the mood…

Before the rest of the guests join in, eager to dance the night away.

Sometime in the early hours of the morning I changed into something less formal.

And we put our dancing shoes to work!

In between boogies, guests could wander the bridge for another piece of cake, a cup of coffee, or just a breather.

But nobody could stay away for long.

My favorite DJ, Hugo Heathcote, joined us from London and has a unique talent for offering something for every guest, every generation and every mood.

He reads a room like no other, seamlessly fusing old-school hip-hop with Motown, vintage classics with current hits.

We just had fun.

We made our way home, cutting through the calm surface of the lake just as the sun was rising.

Stretched out on the back of the boat, in someone else’s tuxedo, I fell asleep with my head on my husband’s shoulder and counted my lucky stars.

The wait was worth it.
