Former DB Scott Turner’s post-NFL accomplishments are vast and impressive

By Lisa Zimmerman

Professional athletes, check. Motivational speaker, check. Spiritual Advisor, check. Successful businessman making check. Texas Representative, check. Honorary doctorate, check. 43-year-old Texas native and former NFL cornerback Scott Turner has made a success of practically everything he sets his mind to.

After a strong collegiate career at the University of Illinois, the former NFL defenseman spent nine years in the league, playing for the Washington Redskins (who drafted him in the seventh round of the 1995 NFL draft), the San Diego Chargers and the Denver Broncos. Turner had studied speech communications and knew he was intrigued by the idea of public speaking and that he needed a back-up plan beyond football, but had no idea which path – actually paths – he was actually going to take.

“I realized that the Lord had given me the gift of speaking and of encouragement,” he said. “It was pure talent. I knew I wanted to do this after college and after the NFL. I didn’t know early on where speaking would manifest itself. I spoke a lot in college, but it was local high school athletic teams, youth conventions, sports banquets, things that a lot of college kids get the opportunity to do.”

His oratory skills continued throughout college, and then, during his freshman year playing in the nation’s capital surrounded by the sights and sounds of government, he felt a small flare of interest. Five years later through 2003, while he was playing for the Denver Broncos, a pamphlet was placed in his locker detailing several internships available with the NFL. Last on the list was one for the US Congress.

“I said, ‘That’s me,'” Turner recalled.

His internship with Duncan Hunter, a Republican congressman from California who served 28 years in Congress and chaired the House Armed Services Committee, opened his eyes and provided further inspiration.

“He’s a true statesman,” Turner said. “He took me under his wing. Took me to military bases where I spoke to soldiers returning home from Iraq and Afghanistan. That’s where I really came into play. I was very blessed because Duncan was a mentor to me. He was a true servant leader. I’ve seen the good and the bad of our nation’s politics. During that time, my heart was kindled for service to our country and the people of America, and with the platform and talent that the Lord had blessed me with, I wanted to give back. Bring leadership, be a role model to young people and athletes so people see you can do something outside the norm.”

After Turner retired from the NFL in 2003, Congressman Hunter offered him a full-time position in his office, which he quickly accepted. He soon decided it was time to dive into the political pond himself and launched his first political campaign in 2006, running for an empty seat in the California Congress in the Republican primary. He had a poor performance there but knew it was only a matter of time before he would try again. Turner returned home to Texas, where he became involved in a software business and continued his motivational speeches.

In 2012, Turner ran for state representative in the 33rd district of the Texas House of Representatives, an area north of Dallas. He won. A result he calls “an enormous honor”.

He credits his upbringing with laying the foundation for his focus, drive, and commitment. “My parents and godparents always taught me to serve others,” he said. “You always taught me to care, to work hard, and to have tremendous faith. Not everyone does it and that separates people. It is not easy; you just have to think about what you’re going to do.”

And that drive means one job just isn’t enough for Turner. He and his wife Robin own a company called Statesman Clothiers. It’s a menswear line that offers tailored clothing, especially for men who have a hard time buying off the rack. And who does all the face-to-face counseling and measurement? That would be Turner.

His work ethic and ability to multitask started early when he and his father, who has worked for the same company for 35 years, started a part-time janitorial business and cleaned local shops at night.

Adding to his list of commitments is his role as Chief Inspiration Officer for Systemware, a software company, and serving as one of the coordinators and transition coaches for the NFL’s Legends community, which is a very personal endeavor.

“I want to give back what I received to my colleagues, both current and former players, to help them with their transition (out of the NFL),” he said. “I constantly meet with players who are making career transitions and changes. My wife and I constantly advise former players and families. We did that before I became a transition coach. It’s a great program.”

All of Turner’s various endeavors have not gone unnoticed. In January, Dallas Baptist University awarded him an honorary doctorate, which requires a unanimous vote by the nominating committee.

But most importantly, Turner instills in everyone he comes in contact with, and especially his NFL peers, the same drive and confidence that his family instilled in him so many years ago.

“The same determination, focus and heart that you tapped into and put into getting into the NFL and staying in the NFL is the same determination, focus and heart that you brought into your next phase of your life,” Turner said. “Fear will paralyze and paralyze you and prevent you from doing what you are passionate about. You have to overcome fear. The way you will overcome it is by saying “yes” to your passion and “yes” to your dream. You don’t have to reinvent the wheel. Be yourself. When you get out of the NFL, you’re the same guy.”
