Taylor Tabb Bakes the Impossible

Taylor Tabb bakes the impossible

CMU graduate judging by Netflix show

December 10, 2021

At 4am on the morning of Senior Design Expo, Taylor Tabb, Evan Hill and Mitchell Riek put the finishing touches on Cheeseborg, a robot that can make a grilled cheese sandwich. While his teammates were willing to get some sleep before the day’s presentation, Tabb wanted to document the success of a tough semester. After some prodding and cajoling, the team shot a few short videos of the robot building, heating, and finishing a grilled cheese, and then it was off to bed.

After the excitement of winning two major awards at the fair, taking final exams, and then graduating from Carnegie Mellon University, Tabb found the time to stitch these clips together into a video that shows Cheeseborg in all its glory and posed it online. Little did he know that a one-minute video would lead to a really sweet opportunity.

Cheeseborg was the culmination of everything Tabb did at CMU: his engineering degree, design courses he took just because they were interesting, his work building stands and technical buggies for SigEp Racing, and his interest in creating a people-centric design experience to create the medium of robots. Netflix producers saw the video and contacted Tabb about a spot on the Baking Impossible show.

The premise of the show is that it pairs bakers with engineers and then has these teams of “bakineers” compete in a series of crazy challenges. The show’s first episode gave teams the task of building a boat out of edible materials that not only floats, but also navigates through a water obstacle tank. The show is all about technical feats through delicious baked goods.

“The science was easy. It was like high school physics, but the stakes were definitely higher because of the materials we had to use, not to mention the cameras,” Tabb said.

It took the Bakineer couples a high level of cohesion and their creativity to use edible materials and produce something visually striking that could survive the stress tests the judges put on each creation.

This is where Tabb’s CMU experience started to boil: not only did he know how to approach the challenges from a technical perspective, but he also knew how to work with non-engineers on projects. That made working with his baking partner, Cindy Ngar, as smooth as a hot knife through butter.

Although they had never met before the show, Tabb and Ngar developed a partnership that combined their skills and knowledge. As Tabb said on the show, “Our talents are multiplicative, not summative.”

While the show’s edible boat was a breeze for Ngar and Tabb, other challenges weren’t so sweet. A shaker table, used in a later episode to test how a structure responds to seismic performance, literally brought down the gingerbread house.

Overall, Tabb and Ngar’s innovation shone to create some truly remarkable pieces.
