Rather than slide on beats or rush against them, his vocals tangle with the production and move in calculated harmonic outbursts of emotion. After amassing more than 20 million streams independently and making waves, he masterfully borrows from an ever-evolving melodic sensibility on a series of singles for Republic Records in 2021.
“I use my voice as an instrument,” he says. “I’m confident enough to always change my sound and tone. I try to hit notes that nobody would have thought I could do. I’m constantly exploring things outside of my comfort zone. The melody is the most important thing. Even if you don’t know the lyrics, you should be able to hum along and feel the energy.”
Growing up in Rochester, he studied and memorized videos of Michael Jackson on YouTube. Dad owned a studio and often recorded friends. By the age of six, Slump6s was singing over pop beats and recording himself. During his school days he played in a band and learned to play the clarinet, trombone, trumpet and drums, developing a diverse range of sounds in the process. “When I did it, I was stuck in a bubble,” he admits. “Right now I’m finally in position for a big moment. That’s what the song is about.”
