At the height of President Bill Clinton’s impeachment scandal in the ’90s, Susan Carpenter-McMillan was a staple of every newscast. After Paula Jones accused Clinton of embarrassing himself as Arkansas governor and proposing to her in a hotel room, Carpenter-McMillan became Jones’ spokesperson and has appeared in everything from Meet the Press and Crossfire to Larry King Live, Today and Hannity & Colmes. (Clinton has repeatedly denied Jones’ claims). She called the then-President a “slimball,” a “liar,” and a “womanizer,” with Slate describing her scathing comment in 1997 as “the best entertainment of the summer” when the conservatives who funded her services had “used” her for political gain .
As portrayed in FX’s Impeachment: American Crime Story, Carpenter-McMillan is a self-proclaimed conservative feminist and longtime anti-abortion activist (though she later admitted to having had two abortions herself). She first came to national attention during her 1986 crusade to help a dying newborn named “Baby Jesse” receive a heart transplant from Loma Linda University Medical Center. As executive director of the Pasadena, California-based Women’s Coalition, she also supported a 1996 California law mandating chemical castration for repeat sex offenders. But Carpenter-McMillan really got famous when she started working for Jones in the spring of 1997.

According to Slate, Carpenter-McMillan befriended Jones in 1995 because she felt liberal women were dismissive of the former Arkansas state employee. She soon came to regard Jones as a “younger sister” and eventually took control of the lawsuit Jones filed against Clinton in May 1994, prompting Jones’ attorneys, Gilbert Davis and Joseph Cammarata, to quit and William McMillan, step in as a negotiator. They reached a final settlement in November 1998 that required Clinton to pay Jones $850,000 in exchange for dropping the sexual misconduct charges, though he never apologized or admitted wrongdoing.
After the lawsuit drew media attention, Carpenter-McMillan ran unsuccessfully as the Republican nominee for California’s 44th Circuit for the state assembly in 2000 — something she told the Los Angeles Times she “always wanted.” She added that she remains committed to helping people like Jones. “To this day, I always feel drawn to the underdogs. It’s my passion,” she said at the time.
After losing the election (and enduring frequent attacks from her opponents), McMillan largely disappeared from public view. She is now 71 and has two daughters, Cameo, 43, and Tara, 36, with ex William McMillan III.

Is Judith Light’s Impeachment Character a Monster Judge for Yourself
Judith Light doesn’t judge her characters.
“We are not human acts. We’re human,” the two-time Tony winner told Vanity Fair. “What is the essence of this person? What is the soul of this character? What are you looking for? What are they longing for? I’m excited about that.”
It’s an approach Light has taken time and time again throughout her decades-long career; most recently in her role as “conservative feminist” Susan Carpenter-McMillan on Impeachment: American Crime Story. Carpenter-McMillan, the president and co-founder of the Women’s Coalition, is pinning her star on Paula Jones, an Arkansas state official who accused then-President Bill Clinton of embarrassing himself to her and asking for oral sex in a hotel room. (In real life, Clinton denied Jones’ claims.)
In Jones, Carpenter-McMillan sees a lost soul in need of an ally. She also sees the younger woman as an attempt to humiliate a president with political views diametrically opposed to hers. As a longtime advocate for progressive causes like LGBTQ rights, Light wants viewers to judge Carpenter-McMillan for themselves.

Light began in theater, a discipline to which she credits her ability to embody such a wide range of characters. As a young girl, she took part in school plays, and in high school she took part in a summer acting program at the prestigious Carnegie Mellon University, where she later received an acting degree. She says the rigors of live theater prepared her for television and film acting, thanks to the depth of rehearsals and character study.
As Carpenter-McMillan, Light is equal parts terrifying and amazingly likeable. Despite Carpenter-McMillan’s conservative values, Light points out that she may be the only person on Jones’ team. When Jones’ all-male team of lawyers and husband urges her to accept a settlement, Carpenter-McMillan steps in and urges her to pursue her case. (Jones’ sexual harassment lawsuit against the president eventually ended in a settlement in which Clinton agreed to pay Jones $850,000.)
“Paula Jones made a very difficult decision to speak out about this,” says Light. “And it was Susan who saw that she needed some kind of support.”
Still, she says, it’s not about making Carpenter-McMillan a hero — or even Jones. Instead, it’s about viewing these characters as complex women and exposing the truth that sexual violence and misogyny are bipartisan afflictions. “This show is less about Bill Clinton and more about all these other women and the way they were treated,” says Light. They are at the heart of impeachment: determined, flawed, heartfelt, even understandable.
Centering nuanced, multidimensional female characters is a common thread not only in Impeachment, but also in Light’s career. Whether as the divorced businesswoman Angela Bower in the hit ’80s sitcom Who’s the Boss? or Marilyn Miglin, widow of one of Andrew Cunanan’s victims in The Assassination of Gianni Versace, Light brings a raw glamor to her that makes her characters both relatable and theatrical. Miglin in particular reminds her of the women in Tennessee Williams’ plays: “The kind of fragility and vulnerability, and how the people and the culture so exploited women.”
