Even though there is so much support for it, there are still people who are against homosexuality and there was a perfect example of that recently in Tennessee, USA.

There was news of a woman, now believed to be Karen, found spray-painted over the LGBTQIA logo made by some teenagers to mark Pre month.

If the heteronormative world is wondering why Pride Month is necessary, all they have to do is search Alcoa, Tennessee. On June 9, in the Blount County community, two teenage girls, Jasmine Martinez and Carmen McClain, were decorating a bridge known for community arts with Pride flags when a “Karen” approached the girls and made a tirade.

The whole incident was originally caught by McClain and posted on her TikTok account. Although McClain removed the video, it was saved elsewhere. It didn’t take long for the internet to identify the Karen. Many people on social media identified the woman as Tabitha Dardeau Travis of Maryville, TN, but they didn’t stop there. Travis’ place of work was also revealed, Blount Memorial Hospital, which is affiliated with the Mayo Clinic.

After Travis was exposed, many took to Twitter to confront the employer about their homophobic behavior.

Martinez also posted various photos and videos on her Instagram account, revealing not only Travis’ behavior but also how others in that city wrote homophobic messages about the Pride flags.

McClain shared on her TikTok account how people in the community have spoken out for her and her friend, but also for the LGBTQ community.

“I’m sick of y’all!” Homophobic “Karen” goes ballistic on pride flag art

Video of a woman defacing a Pride flag mural in Alcoa, Tennessee has gone viral, sparking calls for her to be discharged from a local hospital.

Teen artists Jasmine Martinez and Carmen McClain painted a mural of the Pride and transgender flags on a local bridge known for its community artworks. Meanwhile, a woman — later identified as Maryville resident Tabitha Dardeau Travis — began harassing the teenage girls for depicting the flag.

After insulting the girls — including using racially charged language and claiming they aren’t citizens — Travis makes her own spray cans.

“I take over. I’m as right as you are,” Travis says in the footage. Then she begins to paint over the murals with spray paint. “Actually, I’m bloody right. I work, I pay taxes. I’m an American who was born here.”

“I’m sick of your shit,” Travis scolds. “You are constantly – it is constantly something. You’re always trying to stand out and make a damn big scene. If you would just shut up…”

“We’re making a scene?” interjects one of the girls in disbelief.

“Yes, all you want to do is express,” says Travis.

The footage ends there. Instinct reports that McClain initially posted the video to her TikTok account before it was removed. That didn’t stop the footage from going viral on multiple social media platforms, including Twitter, prompting various commenters to call for Travis to be fired from her job at Blount Memorial Hospital.

Meanwhile, members of the community showed up to retouch the murals on the bridge, some even standing by to guard them. That didn’t stop an anonymous vandal from parking his truck and defacing the mural while local reporters from NBC News covered the story. The vandalism was filmed by a camera.

Still, McClain and Martinez remain undeterred.

“We’re not going to stop,” McClain told reporters. “People will probably cross that bridge again. And we will be back. And we will paint over it.”

Woman in viral anti-Pride video no longer a BMH employee

A Maryville hospital worker who was embroiled in controversy after attacking two LGBTQ teenagers for painting Pride graffiti on a bridge has lost her job, officials said.

The woman, identified as Tabitha Dardeau Travis, was not identified by name in the statement issued by Blount Memorial Hospital on Friday, but has been identified through numerous other sources.

Travis reached out to the two teenagers, who were painting rainbow Pride flags on a well-known bridge in Alcoa at the intersection of Darwin Street and Faraday Street, on June 8. The bridge has been designated by the city as a free speech area, where people are allowed to express themselves through graffiti.

“Many of you have come forward regarding an individual identified as a Blount Memorial employee who was recently involved in a confrontation and incident involving the Painted Bridge in the Alcoa community,” the statement read the hospital’s Facebook page was released Friday.

“We can confirm that as of Friday, June 11, this individual was a PRN employee at Blount Memorial Wellness Center in Springbrook and occasionally taught fitness classes. We can also confirm that this individual is no longer an employee of Blount Memorial.

“We value and respect everyone in our community, and the actions displayed do not reflect our organization’s standards and values.”

Hospital officials didn’t say if Travis had quit or resigned. She could not be reached for comment.

The teenagers – Carmen McClain and her friend Jasmine Martinez – recorded video of the encounter on their phones and posted it to social media sites. The video showed Travis as she began painting over the teens’ mural, arguing that she had the right to do so because she pays taxes.

“I’m as right as you are, actually I’m even more right damn right, because you know what? I work, I pay taxes, I’m American, born here,” she said in the video.

Both Martinez, an Alcoa High School senior, and McClain, who attends Heritage High School, have tan skin. Martinez identifies as Hispanic and McClain as Italian and Native American.

The video sparked a massive backlash against Travis, who has not made any public statements since the incident.

McClain and Martinez did not respond to requests for comment on Sunday.

Abi Lucas, an LGBTQ activist who came to the bridge to help repaint the Pride message and hopes to put together a youth support group, said Sunday she wishes the situation hadn’t escalated to the point that Travis lost her job.

“I’m pretty happy with the result. I really wish she didn’t have to lose her job and face so much backlash from the community,” Lucas said. “It just goes to show that there are repercussions for your actions, good or bad. I hope she learns from this experience and can bounce back, perhaps giving back to the LQBTQ community and making a positive impact.”

She added: “I am very happy for Jasmine and Carmen as they are so young and have handled this situation with grace. While this was a terrible thing, we made something really positive out of it and we have so much more support from the community now.”
