Hooper is on top of the world – TwisTed Rodeo

Tilden Hooper became a new dad earlier this year and went on to win The American. He’s on top of the world in so many ways, and that’s exciting. Unfortunately, he strives to take care of his family as best as he can by being a good father, husband, and bareback driver.

From wild nights to father life, CINCH Cowboy still rides strong

Tilden Hooper’s mind works a little differently than most men’s.

He is a bareback rider in the professional rodeo. These cowboys look at things in a spectacular way. Like a runaway train, something inside them is always racing. Not many people in this world would strap themselves to half a ton of horse dynamite, but Hooper does that every day.

It wasn’t without sacrifice. He has found himself on the injured reserve list for over 15 seasons; that’s not really a rodeo term per se because he doesn’t make a dime sitting on the sidelines or hearing from his buddies who are on the rodeo trail while he sits at home recovering from an injury.

The worst was a neck injury he sustained nine seasons ago. Doctors said it was a herniated disk with compression of the spinal cord and nerves, a direct reflection of his profession. Bareback riders sit atop bucking beasts with their specially constructed rigging strapped tightly to the beasts’ backs with webbing. The cowboys, wearing custom-made gloves with ties, then clamp their hands in the rigging handles, nod their heads and prepare their bodies for the detonation – the blast from the chutes and eight seconds of wild energy.

The funny thing is that at 33 he drives better than he did a decade ago.

“I think God has blessed me with the opportunity to continue doing what I love,” said Hooper, who is originally from Carthage, East Texas but now resides in Fort Worth with his wife Melissa and young son Tell . “The relationship I have with Shawn Scott is huge. He is the chiropractor that has helped me through all of these things. If I hadn’t met him I don’t think I would have been able to get through the injuries and be better off.

“I am very grateful that God put him into my life.”

That’s a common theme for the Bronc Buster, who won the 2007 intercollegiate championship and was subsequently named Resistol Rookie of the Year by the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association. Since that incredible initiation into a sport of tough men, fast horses and wild times, Hooper has been a top echelon bareback rider and ambassador for the game, a seven-time qualifier for the National Finals Rodeo, the Grand des Sports Finale.

“I’m a completely different guy than I was when I was 19,” said Hooper, who has been endorsed by CINCH Jeans since 2010. “Life is very different. My ideas about what I want to be as a father and husband have changed. I thought I would set the world on fire and be the wildest bareback rider. After my injury and after other things happened in my life, God put my wife into my life. Since Melissa has been here, life has been great.

“When I was 19, I thought I wanted to reach the national finals a hundred times. My goals now are to create a good life for my family so that I can spend time with them every day and have the opportunity to be practical with my wife and son. I want to build a life. If I win a gold buckle, that’s great. I want to be known as a great bareback rider, but I also want to be known as a great man.”

He tries to walk this path every day. He’s comedic with a smartass flair for fun. His competitors – men like Kaycee Feild, a five-time world champion – are his subjects and he is theirs. Feild sets out because of Hooper’s poor driving skills and his lack of driving skills; Hooper jokes that the Utah champ enjoys eggs benedict, though Feild can’t pronounce hollandaise sauce — he calls it Häagen-Dazs instead.

“I have a sister, and we’re pretty close, but I also have a brother,” Hooper said, referring to Feild. “It’s just that we have different parents. Her family just took me in, and the same goes for my family and him. I could see Kaycee was more concerned about the impact he was making outside of the rodeo world and he had a pretty good understanding that we wouldn’t be doing this forever. It’s the same with me.

“The things we do outside the arena are definitely more important than what we do inside the arena. As far as a competitor goes, Kaycee is the best it’s ever made. Competing with him all the time improved my game. It might have been different if we hadn’t traveled together. We definitely complement each other well.”

Feild has more world titles today than any other bareback rider riding up and down the street. He has compared the number of gold buckles to his late father, Lewis, who was a three-time all-around champion and two-time saddle-riding champion. He’s also been a mentor to many of the game’s biggest hands, including Hooper.

“I was very fortunate to meet Kaycee’s father before he died,” he said. “For me, he was the best I’ve ever met. The legacy he left…”

His voice cracked a little.

“… that’s what I shoot for.”

He leaves a pretty good legacy for himself, and a big part of that stems from his relationship with CINCH, a western clothing manufacturer that’s a major sponsor of the rodeo and a driving force in the western lifestyle. Clothing is important for cowboys, who often travel hundreds of miles between rodeos to arrive at the next stop just in time to prepare for another 8-second ride.

“The products are exceptionally well made and still fashionable,” said Hooper. “I think it has great products, but more than that, I love the people who work there. You are like family. There were several years there when we didn’t know if I would continue. You have always stayed with me.”

Comfort is one thing, but there’s something else inside the Texan that keeps burning. The constant search for perfection is hard to endure for competitors of its stature. Proof was provided in 2021. He’s at the top of his game and the top of the game. He’s been the league leader since opening weekend in March when he won The American in Arlington, Texas. That was worth $100,000, half of which counts towards PRCA scoring.

“Anytime you can beat the best guys in the world on the biggest stage in the world on the best horses in the world… that’s why I do it,” he said.

Since then he’s remained on the road to success, raking in $8,800 for the win in Clovis, California and $7,600 in San Angelo, Texas, with most of the schedule still to come. A $50,000 windfall at a rodeo relieves the pressure of a long, difficult rodeo season, but it won’t change Hooper’s plans as he drives on with late-night dreams of that elusive Montana Silversmiths gold buckle.

Most importantly, however, Tilden Hooper points to Melissa and Tell as the lights of his life. He enjoys the time he has with them as the rodeo trail is rugged and filled with lots of twists and turns and a roller coaster of emotions. This is a business, and riding bucking horses is his job, but also being a husband and father.

“Being a father has changed me a lot,” he said. “As anyone with kids knows, it’s not about you anymore. It’s the biggest thing in the world. Before we had a kid, I didn’t think I wanted kids. I’m just thankful that God put this little guy into our lives. I don’t know what I would do without him.

“I will do whatever I have to do to keep him healthy and happy.”

That’s what fatherhood is all about.
