So Olga paid a stipend for Saule’s room from her charity, she said, while her former friend “lived in better conditions.”
The cost for the academic year was around US$50 at the then official exchange rate to the Soviet ruble.
But the fictitious value hid the true cost to Olga of an arrangement that she said cost her perhaps 15 percent of her meager student stipend.
She confronted Omarova about the money and expected a refund, she told us.
“I finally managed to ask Saule, who had been avoiding me, about the money debts that had accumulated throughout the school year,” said Olga with barely concealed fear of a long-gone event.
“She suffered an amnesiac attack and fled.”
With a big dose of sarcasm, Olga said: “So I have no doubt that Saule will be successful in her new position in America.
“For me at the time, a young girl from an intellectual family, it was a real shock how she behaved.
“And since then I’ve had no further communication with Saule.”

Toomey noted that sometime after April 2017, Omarova deleted the reference to the paper from her resume.
The senator said of Biden’s nominee, “I don’t think I’ve ever seen a more radical choice for a regulatory item in our federal government.”

“She never dated anyone at school or university,” he recalls. “She was too busy with her studies.”
Saule was doing well, although “her mother had to resew her clothes to make her look better,” said another contemporary.
That same year – 1984 – she graduated from school with top marks and a rare gold medal, the ultimate badge of honor for Soviet students, clearly destined for a bright future in the USSR.
Laura Sharkubenova, the school’s current principal, who was unaware of her high-flying alumni in the US, said: “I unfortunately don’t know anything about the family.
“I see her mother’s name on the register. She worked in a tuberculosis clinic.
“We don’t have a single teacher left on the faculty who could have taught Saule.
“But I do know for a fact that she graduated with a gold medal — we have that data.”
It is believed that her father was also a high-flying paramedic, although he was absent for much of her childhood.

“She didn’t go to parties at the university,” Bulegenov said. “She traveled between classes, her dorm and the library.”
