‘Punk rock’ welding drives Netflix ‘Metal Shop Masters’ judge at her Lacey business

Suzanne Bloom

LACEY – Stephanie Hoffman, who describes herself as a “tomboy” and grew up in the Forked River neighborhood of Lacey, has always had an affinity for the art of welding.

And today, as one of the few female faces in the industry, she’s taken her passion to unique new heights – from founding a successful Forked River-based company, UnderGround Metal Works, to starring in a popular Netflix show, to… Opening a brand new welding school where she hopes to inspire the next generation of metal fabricators.

“My father worked in heavy construction and was always impressed by the skills of the welders who worked for him,” recalls Hoffman, a Beachwood resident. “He was constantly praising the field and thought it was a great career, so when I was about 11 I asked him if I could give it a try. I fell in love with welding straight away and as it turned out I had a knack for it too.”

Hoffman took welding courses as electives throughout high school, eventually becoming one of the first female graduates from Ocean County VoTech in Toms River.

“I loved the story”: Asbury Park shopkeeper recycles wood to make new furniture

However, according to Hoffman, being a woman in a historically male-dominated field brought added pressure.

“All through school I was under the microscope. People were always looking for a reason to discredit me, so no mistakes were allowed,” she said. “But that spurred me on even more and I ended up earning American Welding Society (AWS) certifications that surpassed those of my male classmates.”

She spent the next few years doing heavy pipe work for various companies until she had her daughter in 2008.

“It was at that point that I decided to teach welding because of the flexibility it offered,” said Hoffman, who became an assistant teacher alongside her former mentor at Ocean County VoTech and then taught at Salem County VoTech for the next four years — a move which unexpectedly led to the founding of her company.

“UnderGround Metal Works was accidentally formed in 2016 while I was teaching,” Hoffman explained. “When I was helping some of my students find jobs and they went to work, I had time off at the end of the day, so I started doing metalwork for friends, including everything from custom furniture to roll cages for the site has vehicles and signage for hair salons, tattoo shops, bars and cafes,” she said.

“It was a different kind of welding than what you’re used to, and I realized that these kinds of projects were a great way for me to engage students of mine who didn’t have jobs yet,” she said.

Hoffman continued to incorporate these types of “cool constructions” into her students’ curricula until she quit teaching to focus solely on this type of work and founded UnderGround Metal Works from her detached garage in 2019.

Punk rock meets Miami Vice

As word of her work spread and she began taking on projects ranging from designing signage for a Botox studio in Red Bank to designing faucets for a bar in Louisville, Kentucky, American Welding joined Society approached her to become a face/ambassador of her organization.

“It was a great honor and I jumped at the opportunity right away,” Hoffman said of the position, which she has held since 2019. “I currently teach about welding to over 60,000 students a year nationwide at trade schools, state fairs, rodeos and agricultural events, and I also prepare a lot of video content and tutorials for the AWS. With the estimated shortage of over 250,000 welders the nation will face over the next five years, I’m working to raise awareness of the area and promote AWS scholarship and grant programs.”

Her prominence in this field also led to her star career as a content expert and judge on the Netflix series Metal Shop Masters.

Making music: Oceanport’s music teacher lives the dream of making music for a living

“They approached me about my status in the welding industry and it’s been a great experience,” she said of the show, which is available to watch on Netflix streaming.

Between her role on the show and the 14 weeks a year she spends touring the nation on behalf of the AWS, “I’ve missed teaching,” said Hoffman, who addressed that gap by expanding her business by one new welding school in Forked advanced river this February.

In the 2,000-square-foot space that now also houses her shop, “it’s very communal, with floating booths and a one-to-one feel at affordable prices,” she said. “Whereas other schools often enroll 20 students at a time and offer unit classes, we teach five students at a time in a way that is very tailored to their needs. We have small classes, a great environment and a very personal approach to education.”

Manufacturing: Roben, co-owner, brings the wisdom of Wall Street to his family business in Lakewood

Since opening just two months ago, Hoffman said all or most of her current courses — ranging in price from $400 for one-day intensives to $850 for week-long programs — have sold out.

“I’ve had students come from Washington, Texas, Tennessee, and across the country because that type of school doesn’t exist anywhere else,” she said.

“I’m a huge punk rock fan and I love the Miami vibe, so this school is ‘punk rock meets ‘Miami Vice,'” she said of the completely renovated, industrial-chic space with stamped tin tiles and neon graffiti covering the walls, black epoxy floors with glitter and a 40′ x 16’ wall that reads “Enjoy the Ride…Stay Rad”.

Registration fees include each student’s materials and personal protective equipment, while the school’s small retail store offers a collection of laser-cut signs, UnderGround Metal Works merchandise, and other welding safety gear.

Make welding more accessible

“You can achieve that texture and depth through metal fabrication and engraving,” Hoffman said of her creations, which often incorporate wood, lights, and other materials and are priced at $95 per labor hour plus material (with plasma cutting charged by part size will and material).

“I’ve done everything from large banquet tables with metal legs and wood tops to an item for comedian Jo Koy and a cool steel and engraved copper anchor sign for Bryan Kienlen, bassist for The Bouncing Souls and owner of Anchors Aweigh Tattoo in Bradley Beach .”

Among trends in the industry, Hoffman said welding machines have become more user-friendly, accessible, and affordable than ever, especially for DIYers.

“You can now get great gear for under $1,000 or $2,000 and do it yourself instead of hiring out the work,” she said. “Also, I’m seeing more women coming into the field than 20 years ago, which is great given the current male skills shortage. There are more and more opportunities for women to fill these jobs and companies will need us.”

Some of her favorite things about her job include, “I love challenging myself to create things with metal and seeing customer appreciation,” Hoffman said. “I also enjoy adapting my teaching style to include each student and then seeing them succeed and feel confident. I love those ‘a-ha’ moments.”

As the modern face of an ancient craft, Hoffman hopes to make welding more accessible and less intimidating for men and women alike.

“Welding used to be just a structural part of building, but now it’s also an artistic medium,” said Hoffman, whose school will host an open house on May 21 with live demos, discounted classes and giveaways. “I want to inspire more people to take up the craft so they can experience the joy of making epic things with their hands.”
