Myers claimed his store, which he called “The Best Little War House in Kennesaw,” was a museum. “It’s all history regardless of what you think about it,” he told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution in 2020.

He greeted customers and posed for photos in his standard outfit of headscarf, T-shirt and jeans, with a pair of .45 pistols strapped to his waist. He wore several silver rings. His beard was huge and turned white over the years. His hair was hippie length.

“He represented the worst of the old Cobb County, the worst of the old South,” said Doug Monroe, former chief of the Atlanta Journal’s Cobb County Office of the Constitution and senior editor of the Atlanta Magazine.

“Cobb County was a very different place years ago,” Monroe said. “His history in terms of race and Confederacy is quite obscure. Dent reflected that back in the 80s.”

Jimmy Dickens, a black man, former city councilman and partner at Kennesaw’s Amazing Cuts hair salon, had a different take on Myers. He heard about Myers when he moved to Kennesaw in 2005 and invited him to lunch.

“I asked him if he liked black people,” Dickens said. “He said I hate nobody. I don’t hate black people or Jews. But what I hate is that you guys come over here to my country and drip into Kennesaw and I’ve had to adapt to your slang, the way you dress, your culture, the way you live. We were fine in Kennesaw the way we were before you trickled down here.

“I said, Mr. Myers, we just didn’t leak to Kennesaw. We were fine where we were. We were brought here and we reaped your land and we built your railroads and your [ancestors] did what they wanted with our daughters, wives and mothers. We had to adapt to your language and culture. And we are here now and we need to find common ground.

“He told me, ‘You and I will be friends. No one’s ever explained it to me like that,” Dickens said. “And from that day on we were friends. He treated me with respect. And I will miss him.”

Myers opened his shop in 1971 and attracted media attention in 1982 when Kennesaw passed an ordinance requiring all citizens to own a gun and ammunition. He was always armed, outspoken and ready to pose for cameras for local and national media.

He was active in Civil War re-enactor groups, and dressed as Stonewall Jackson he was “so believable it was scary,” said Dale Spratlin, a retired Austell tattoo artist who met Myers in 1966 when she worked at the Marietta factory by Lockheed Martin worked. “He helped train hundreds of reenactors in the hobby and showed what their representation should be like. He wanted the reenactments to be as real as possible.”

In 1993, the Kennesaw Historical Society presented Myers with its first Historic Preservation Award. The group has rebooted in recent years, leaving Myers in the past. “The group, as it stands, has not done any business with Dent,” a spokesman said.

In the summer of 2020, dozens of Black Lives Matter protesters turned up outside Myers’ store. Many were students at Kennesaw State University. Myers spoke to the protesters occasionally and there was no violence.

In 2021, a left-wing “activist art collective” painted what they called “Antifa Smurfs” on a brick wall in front of the store. The group Indecline issued a press release saying activists spent about six months visiting Wildman’s posing as Civil War enthusiasts. They said they gained the trust of Myers, who gave them permission to paint the wall without knowing how they were going to paint it.

Attempts to contact Myers’ family were unsuccessful. In a post announcing his death, his store’s Facebook page said a public memorial service will be held at a later date.
