Thanks for finding the article. I remember seeing the photo before. It’s quite ironic that Pell married a former classmate with a name so similar to a famous figure skater with a connection to MK (i.e. Yu Na Kim has always said she was inspired by MK to become a figure skater). Regarding Pell’s extreme I come from a wealthy family background with prestigious connections to American history, I’ve been aware of that since Pell and MK’s wedding in 2013. Most notably, I was aware of her ex-husband’s direct family connection to the famed Pell Educational Scholarship. The Pell family also owns many properties in R.I. where MK and Pell resided after their marriage. I was unfamiliar with the Long Island, NY family history. But it’s not surprising. I hadn’t followed MK enough on social media over the past few years to know that she vacations regularly in the Greek islands. She may have met her current boyfriend during her travels there sometime in the last few years. Now, unless we’re close friends with MK and loyal to protecting their privacy, we’ll probably never know much about his background and identity.

Early life and education[edit]
Born in Torrance, California, Kwan was the third child of Danny Kwan and Estella Kwan, Hong Kong Chinese immigrants. Her father was from Canton and immigrated to California from Hong Kong in 1971.[11][12] Kwan grew up speaking Cantonese and English at home.[13]
Kwan’s interest in figure skating began at age five when she followed her two older siblings (hockey player Ron and figure skater Karen) onto the ice.[14] Karen and Michelle started training in earnest when Michelle was about eight years old. They practiced three to four hours a day, waking up at 4:30 a.m. and arriving at the rink at 5:00 a.m. to skate before school, and then going back to the rink right after school to skate again . Paying for her extended time at the rink created financial difficulties for Kwan’s working-class family. By the time Kwan was ten, her family could no longer afford a trainer, but a member of the Los Angeles Figure Skating Club[15] offered them financial support, which enabled them to train at Ice Castle International Training Center in Lake Arrowhead , California.

Kwan won five world championships (1996, 1998, 2000, 2001, 2003), tying with Carol Heiss (1956–1960) for most world titles by an American. Kwan’s total of nine world medals is the all-time record for an American skater in any discipline. The only women’s singles figure skater with more world titles or medals is Sonia Henie of Norway. Kwan won nine US championships (1996, 1998–2005), tying the record for most wins set by Maribel Vinson-Owen (1928–1933, 1935–1937). She holds the record for most consecutive US titles (eight) and most consecutive US championship medals (twelve). She also won the silver medal at the 1998 Nagano Olympics and the bronze medal at the 2002 Salt Lake City Olympics. Kwan has earned a total of 57 perfect marks (6.0) in major competitions, the individual record under the former 6.0 grading system.
Early competition[ edit ]
In 1991, Michelle Kwan and her sister Karen began training with Frank Carroll in Lake Arrowhead, California. After a year of coaching from Carroll, 11-year-old Michelle placed 9th in the juniors at the United States Figure Skating Championships. At the age of 12 in 1992, despite her coach’s disapproval, Michelle passed the gold exam to become a senior-level figure skater. In 1993, Kwan finished sixth at her first senior US championships. The next season she won the 1994 World Junior Championships.
In 1994, Kwan finished second to Tonya Harding at the US Championships, which would normally have put her on the US team for the 1994 Olympics in Lillehammer, Norway. That spot was instead given to 1993 national champion Nancy Kerrigan, who had been sidelined by an attack and battery (eventually linked to Harding’s ex-husband Jeff Gillooly) after training at those championships. 13-year-old Kwan went to Norway as a substitute but did not compete. Kerrigan and Harding were both eliminated from eligible competition prior to the 1994 World Championships. Because of that (and teammate Nicole Bobek not making it to the qualifying round), Kwan was solely responsible for earning USA two appearances at the 1995 World Championships by finishing in the top ten. At the 1995 US Championships, Nicole Bobek won the gold medal while Kwan again took second place after struggling with her Lutz vault in both the short program and free skate. At the 1995 World Championships, she finished fifth in the short program portion of the competition with a clean performance. Artistic development and the 1998 Olympics[edit]
Michelle began developing a more mature style in 1996. Her new, more artistically expressive programs were “Romanza” (short program) and “Salome” (freestyle). She also improved her stretching, speed and jumping technique and performed more difficult choreographies. She won both the US Championship and the World Championship in 1996. In the later event, she ousted defending champion Chen Lu in a very close contest in which both competitors scored two perfect 6.0s for presentation in the free skate.
In the 1996/97 season, Kwan skated on “Dream of Desdemona” (short program) and “Taj Mahal” (free skate). During that season, Kwan struggled with her jumps due to a growth spurt and issues with new skating boots she wore for an endorsement deal with the manufacturer. At the U.S. Nationals in 1997, she fell twice and stumbled once in her free skate, losing the title to Tara Lipinski. A month later, she lost the Champion Series Finals to Lipinski. At the World Championships, Kwan stepped out of her triple Lutz combination and placed 4th in the short program portion of the competition behind Lipinski, France’s Vanessa Gusmeroli and Russia’s Maria Butyrskaya. Kwan ran a six-time clean performance to win the freestyle portion of the competition but finished second overall behind Lipinski.
Kwan started the 1997–1998 Olympic season by winning Skate America (where she defeated Tara Lipinski) and then Skate Canada. However, she suffered a stress fracture in her foot and was forced to abandon her third Champions Series final. Kwan regained her US title from Lipinski at the 1998 national championships despite her broken toe. Many people consider her performances of her Rachmaninoff short program and free skate set to William Alwyn’s “Lyra Angelica” at the 1998 US Championships to be the pinnacle of her career, both technically and artistically. The performances earned her fifteen perfect 6.0s and had two judges in tears.[25]
Kwan and Lipinski were favorites to win the 1998 Olympics in Nagano, Japan. Kwan placed first in the short program portion of the competition, winning eight votes for first place from nine judges. In the freestyle, Kwan did a clean 7-triple performance, but placed behind Lipinski, who also did 7 triples, including a triple-loop/triple-loop combo and a triple-toe-loop/half-loop/triple-salchow . Kwan eventually won the silver medal, with the gold medal going to Tara Lipinski and the bronze medal to Chen Lu.[26]
Lipinski and Chen both retired from competitive sports shortly after the Olympics, while Kwan won the 1998 World Championships in Minneapolis.
From 1998 to 2002 Olympics[ edit ]
Kwan continued to compete as an eligible skater through the 1998–99 season, although she bypassed the Fall Grand Prix season, opting instead to compete in a series of televised Pro-Am events. Her “normal” competition programs that season were “Fate of Carmen” (short program) and “Lamento D’Ariane” (free skate). Kwan won her third national title at the 1999 US Championships, competing against a weak field. At the 1999 World Championships, Kwan did not run her best and finished second behind Russian competitor Maria Butyrskaya.
Kwan’s victory at the 2000 US Nationals was controversial for some.[29] She was criticized for planning an easier solo jump in her short program than some of her competitors (a triple toe loop instead of a triple flip) and fell on that element in the competition. The judges nevertheless placed her third in that segment behind younger contenders Sasha Cohen and Sarah Hughes; however, the placement still kept them in contention for the title. Ultimately, she won the freestyle with the best performance of the night, capturing 8 of the 9 ordinals of first place. At the 2000 World Championships, Kwan again placed third after the short program, behind Maria Butyrskaya and Irina Slutskaya. In her free skate, Kwan landed seven triple jumps, including a combination triple toe loop and triple toe loop, and won that segment of the competition. Butyrskaya lost her commanding lead by finishing third behind Slutskaya in the free skate, allowing Kwan to win the overall title as well.
In the 2000–2001 season, Kwan began collaborating with famed designer (and former figure skater) Vera Wang, who designed most of her competition and show costumes for the next six years. Kwan was only the second figure skater Wang designed for, after Nancy Kerrigan. At this year’s national championships, Kwan again won the title, earning first place from all 9 judges in both the short program and the free skate. At the 2001 World Championships, Kwan finished second to Slutskaya in the short program. Kwan won the title with her free skate “Song of the Black Swan” and performed 7 triples including a combination triple toe loop/triple toe loop.
Kwan and Carroll decided to end their coaching relationship two days before the start of the 2001 Skate America competition. In interviews, Kwan said she had to “take responsibility” for her skating.[35] Kwan arrived at the 2002 US Championships in Los Angeles without a coach while the media scrutinized her breakup with Carroll and the inconsistencies of their season. Kwan won the competition with a revived “Rachmaninoff” short program and a new “Scheherazade” program for her routine, earning a place on the 2002 Olympic team. Joining her on the team was Sasha Cohen (runner-up) and Sarah Hughes ( third parties).[36] 21-year-old Kwan and Russia’s Irina Slutskaya were favorites to win the gold. Kwan led after the short program, followed by Slutskaya, Cohen and Hughes. In the free program, Kwan ran her two-foot triple toe loop combination and fell on her triple flip, while Sarah Hughes ran a clean program. Kwan won the bronze medal behind Hughes and Slutskaya.[37] Kwan’s last event of the season was the 2002 World Championships, where she won the silver medal behind Slutskaya.
Kwan began working with coach Scott Williams in the summer of 2002.[14] She continued to compete on the Olympic circuit, albeit on a more limited scale. During the 2002–04 fall seasons, Kwan only competed in one Grand Prix event, Skate America in fall 2002, which she attended as a last-minute substitute. She won the event and qualified for the Grand Prix Final, but chose not to compete. Kwan chose not to compete in Grand Prix events during the 2003 and 2004 seasons, which used the new scoring system. Kwan won all phases of every competition she entered during the 2002–2003 competition season with her programs: Peter Gabriel’s “The Feeling Begins” from The Last Temptation of Christ (Short Program) and “Concierto de Aranjuez” (Free Skate). She again won the US Championships and regained her world title.
In the fall of 2003, she hired well-known technician Rafael Arutyunyan as her coach,[14] with whom she attempted to increase the technical difficulty of her programs and refine her jumping technique. In the 2003–2004 competitive season, she again ran “The Feeling Begins” for her short program and Puccini’s “Tosca” for her long program. Again, Kwan won the US Championship and received seven more 6.0 seconds for presentation during free skating. At the 2004 World Championships, after a difficult qualifying round, Kwan was penalized in her short program for exceeding the time limit by two seconds. This resulted in her finishing fourth behind America’s Sasha Cohen, Japan’s Shizuka Arakawa and Miki Ando. Kwan ran a clean run with five triples and earned the final 6.0 points awarded at the World Championship. She placed second in the free skating portion (she was missing a judge to win the free skating) and third overall behind Arakawa (who showed seven triples, including two triple-triple combinations) and Cohen.
For the 2004-2005 competitive season, Kwan ran her long program on “Boléro,” choreographed by British ice dancer Christopher Dean, who had skated to the music with Jayne Torvill two decades earlier, and debuted a new short program, “Adagio.” Aram Khachaturian’s ballet Spartacus. At the US Championships, she won her 9th title, tying the record previously set by Maribel Vinson-Owen. Vinson-Owen had coached Frank Carroll, who in turn coached Kwan. At the 2005 World Championships, Kwan competed for the first time under the new rating system. She had a tough qualifying round and placed third in the short program. In the freestyle, Kwan fell on a triple lutz with her triple salchow and two feet. Despite finishing third in both the short and long program portions of the competition, Kwan was edged out by Carolina Kostner for the bronze medal and finished fourth overall, missing third place by 0.37 points. It was the first time since 1995 that Kwan had not won a medal at any international competition, and it would be her last competitive event.
2006 Olympics[edit]
Kwan viewed the 2005 World Championships as a learning experience in the ISU Judging System. She continued to train and stated that she would try to qualify for the 2006 Olympic Games in Turin, Italy.[39] However, after a hip injury, she had to withdraw from her three scheduled competitions in the fall of 2005. Kwan ran her new short program (“Totentanz”) at a TV event in December 2005, but her performance was far below her usual standards. On January 4, 2006, Kwan retired from the US Figure Skating Championships with an abdominal injury sustained in December 2005. A week later, she filed a request with the USFSA for a Therapeutic Use Exemption for the 2006 Olympic figure skating team. 39] On January 14, 2006, after the US women’s figure skating event, the USFSA International Committee met and approved Kwan’s petition by a vote of 20 to 3 on the condition that she demonstrate her physical and competitive readiness to a five-person monitoring panel 27 . January.
Kwan performed her long and short programs for the panel on the appointed day, and her place on the Olympic team was decided as the panel deemed her fit. However, on February 12, 2006, the United States Olympic Committee announced that Kwan had withdrawn from the Games after suffering a new groin injury in her first practice session in Turin. Kwan remarked that she “respected the Olympics too much to compete”. The Torino Organizing Committee accepted USOC’s request for Emily Hughes (who had placed third at the US Championships) to compete as Kwan’s replacement.
After her retirement from the Olympic team, Kwan turned down an offer to remain as a figure skating commentator for NBC Sports in Turin.[41] During an interview with Bob Costas and Scott Hamilton, Kwan said she’s not yet retiring.
Kwan underwent elective arthroscopic surgery in August 2006 to repair a torn labrum in her right hip, an old injury that she traces back to 2002.[17] According to Kwan, the surgery allowed her to skate pain-free for the first time in four years.[42]
After 2006[ edit ]
Kwan did not compete during the 2006–2007 figure skating season.
Kwan told the Associated Press in October 2007 that she would make up her mind in 2009 whether she planned to compete in the 2010 Winter Olympics, [42] but she ultimately decided against it and instead focused on graduate school. She said, “Representing the United States as the American Envoy for Public Diplomacy for the past three years has been very rewarding, and I want to do more.” After graduating from the University of Denver in 2009, Kwan said, “The sequel my education will bring me closer to that goal and I don’t want to wait any longer to continue the journey.”[44]
On February 17, 2010, Kwan told ABC News in an interview that she is continuing her studies as a graduate student at Tufts University’s Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy and continues her work as a Public Diplomacy Envoy. Kwan also said she would be commentating for Good Morning America at the 2010 Winter Olympics.
In August 2009, Kwan made her first appearance on the ice in several years, appearing at Ice All Stars, a show directed by South Korean world champion Yuna Kim in Seoul, South Korea. Kim considered Kwan her idol growing up.[46] Kwan also later appeared in Kim’s All That skate shows in South Korea and Los Angeles.
She was selected as a guest of honor to perform at the opening of a new synthetic ice rink at Marina Bay Sands Resort in Singapore in December 2010, where she performed a modified routine to “Winter Song”, a program she self-choreographed with her sister. [48] A month later, she returned to Singapore as envoy for public diplomacy[49] to meet local students and promote ice skating in the tropical country.[50]

Kwan was known for her unrivaled consistency in delivering clean programs[53] as well as for her strong skating skills and deep, quiet edges, described as “quiet blades”[54] that “barely whispered”.[55] She was also known for her musicality and her ability to combine grace and artistry with athleticism.
Although Kwan is neither the biggest size nor the explosive jumper, she has included all triples (except the axel) in her program for most of her career, including two lutze (the most difficult jump after the axel). Kwan’s Split Falling Leaf was praised by fellow skaters Dick Button and Peggy Fleming during competitions for its ease and perfect split position in the air. Kwan performed several split falling hands in quick succession (with no turns or steps in between) while maintaining a split position on both.

Kwan is a recipient of the prestigious James E. Sullivan Award (2001), given to America’s top amateur athlete; She was the first figure skater to win the award since Dick Button in 1949. On November 9, 2006, Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice appointed Michelle Kwan Ambassador for Public Diplomacy. In this non-employee position, Kwan represented American values, particularly towards young people and sports enthusiasts, and traveled extensively.[74] Kwan made her first foreign trip as ambassador for public diplomacy, visiting China on January 17-25, 2007.[75]
She continued her diplomatic position as envoy in the Barack Obama administration, where she worked with Vice President Joe Biden[76] and then Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.[77]

She provided the voice of a shopkeeper in Disney’s direct-to-DVD sequel Mulan II. She also voiced a fictionalized version of herself named Michelle Kwanzleberry in the series finale of Wow! Wow! Wubbzy! in 2010, and she and fellow figure skater Brian Boitano appeared as announcers in the movie Ice Princess.
In 1998, Kwan signed a deal with Walt Disney Television which resulted in her starring in 3 prime time ice skating specials on ABC: “Reflections on Ice” in 1998 (an ice skating adaptation of the Disney film Mulan, based on the Chinese legend), “Michelle Kwan Skates to Disney’s Greatest Hits” in 1999, and “Princess on Ice” in 2001, the final special featuring performances by pop bands O-Town and Shedaisy.[88] She also appeared in various other televised ice skating specials throughout her career.

Scholastic published an autobiography by Kwan entitled Heart of a Champion in 1998, which is now in its sixth edition.[2]
