George Manuel Cabrera Obituary

George Manuel Cabrera Feb 28, 1977 – Jan 30, 2022 George Cabrera was a young man of many talents. At 44, he was an entrepreneur, management consultant, theater producer, music promoter, and community leader. He was also a loving husband, caring father, devoted son and grandson, and loyal friend. Perhaps what was his greatest gift was his ability to attract people. George was a born influencer, someone who made people feel like he cared about them – and they cared back. George’s ability to influence others began at a young age. He was born and raised in Passaic, New Jersey, where he lived with his single mother, Miriam de la Grana, and his maternal grandparents, Manuel and Josefa de la Grana. His mother worked as an emergency coordinator for the city, and his grandfather had a job at a local factory. The family worked hard, but in their spare time they attended a neighborhood Cuban club, where George developed his love for Latin music and dance.
George was in elementary school when he took part in a student talent show. He danced to Afro-Cuban rhythms and invited the audience to embrace his culture. After the show, the principal told George’s mother that her son was a leader who would achieve great things. Miriam never forgot those words.
George has achieved great things. Arguably George’s proudest achievement as a theater producer was The Amparo Experience, an immersive theater production that took Miami by storm in spring 2019. George was co-executive producer on Broadway Factor, a production company he helped found. Amparo was a surprise hit that ran for nine months – from March to November – receiving rave reviews and selling out 250 performances.
George felt special about the track, which told the story of Real Havana Club rum , which takes audiences to Havana in 1957 on the cusp of the Cuban Revolution. For George, it was the story of his and countless other families fleeing Cuba after the communist takeover. Broadway producer Jim Kierstead, who also worked on Amparo, remembered George as a consummate professional who was always willing to help and solve any problems that arose. “His dedication to his work, his colleagues and everyone who knew him was incredible and inspiring,” said Kierstead, a Tony, Emmy and Olivier-winning producer who lives in New York. “He will be greatly missed by all of us in the entertainment world as we have not only lost a wonderful colleague but also a dear friend.” nominees “Frankie and Johnny,” which premiered at the Broadhurst Theater in New York in the summer of 2019, starring Audra Starring McDonald and Michael Shannon.
Over the years he has worked with some of the biggest names in Latin music including Roberto Torres, Eddie Palmieri and Cuban roots singer Albita. Last Halloween, he produced a concert with Albita and her band at the new Westchester Cultural Arts Center in Miami.
Recently, George has been working on several projects at the Westchester Center, including Not Ready for Prime Time, a play based on the original Cast of Saturday Night Live. NRFPT, originally scheduled for January, has been postponed due to COVID concerns.
For the past year, George has supported the Roxy Theater Group, a non-profit academy that runs the state’s Westchester Cultural Arts Center. The Roxy’s artistic director, Charles Sothers, recalls that George was excited to offer programs in the Westchester area so people didn’t have to travel beyond their community to enjoy the arts.
“His death is an immeasurable loss to the Miami entertainment scene. We didn’t meet anyone who didn’t like George and we were blessed that he joined our little Roxy family,” said Sothers. “He quickly became such a force in the arts among us that he left a very big void in our hearts and lives. And while he’s not a phone call away, he will always be a part of everything we do at The Roxy.”
After graduating from high school, George moved to Miami at 18, where he attended college. He graduated with a bachelor’s degree in international business administration from American Intercontinental University in South Florida and a master’s degree in international business administration from Nova Southeastern University
After a brief stint in the corporate world, he became chief financial officer Officer at Aspira of Florida, a national, education-focused, nonprofit organization that ministered to at-risk youth. George took his business acumen with him. He liked to say that “nonprofit” doesn’t mean “no profit.” After a few years, in 2012, he became Aspira of FL’s youngest CEO. While running a large non-profit organization, George was recognized for his innovative use of the Federal New Markets Tax Credit (NMTC) to secure private funding for the construction and renovation of three charter schools in Miami Dade County. He received an additional $25 million through industrial development bonds that enabled his organization to refinance existing debt and fund capital improvement projects. In 2017, George left the nonprofit world to start his own company: Cabrera Consulting Group, a multinational – service company for business development. His clients have included charter schools, business people, theaters and artists, among others.
While his working day was filled with spreadsheets and budgets, George always found time to pursue his passion for music and theater and integrate it into his professional and personal life. While working at Aspira, he organized a benefit concert series headlining former Fania All-Stars musicians at the Coral Springs Center for the Arts. The series became a huge hit with salsa fans.

Dancing to classical salsa and Afro-Cuban music was one of his great passions. He did this on his “date nights” with his wife of 11 years, Violeta Miranda. His love of dancing was passed on to his youngest son, Carlos Manuel, who shares his father’s passion. While George loved his Cuban heritage dearly, he “embraced” Violeta’s Nicaraguan roots and, when they first married, his new Nicaraguan family. Violeta recalls how they “cherished, cultivated and celebrated” each other’s cultures, shared a passion for travel and trotted around the world together. Her travels have included countries such as Egypt, Greece, Turkey, Scandinavia and Russia to name a few. George loved to tell stories about his Indiana Jones adventures with the love of his life, Violeta.
George was always on the go. But no matter how busy he was, he always found time for his “abuela”, which he visited almost every day and went shopping with her on Sundays. He joked that he knew where all the bargains on Cuban goodies were. Sadly, George passed away from heart-related complications early Sunday, January 30th at Kendall Regional Medical Center.
He is survived by his wife Violeta Miranda, his sons Carlos Manuel (9) and Nicholas Cabrera (21), his mother Miriam de la Grana; his sister Jenilyn Gonzales and his grandmother Josefa de la Grana and the family pets: dog Irene; Cat Azulita and Bunny Lolita.
