Various – It’s Bigger Than Both Of Us (NZ Singles 1979–82)

Helped out with Psychamok Records in Wirral, Merseyside – the guy who runs the store has a deep knowledge of bands from this part of the world. I also managed to find some other hidden records (one including a Z’EV record – YES!). Music produced in New Zealand has something against the grain. It’s like a Chinese whisper game started on the other side of the world, got there, and just completely deviated from the original message.
OFFSónar Barcelona, or how an entire city surrenders to electronic music
The annual event took place during the week of July 15-21 as part of the annual Sónar festival
As usual that day, Barcelona was flooded with electronic music in its purest form. For 7 days the performances were spread all over the Mediterranean city; especially in Poble Espanyol and in several of the city’s landmarks.
The coming week looked intense for electronic music lovers. Events were to take place that would bring together many renowned labels, promoters and artists from different genres of electronic music worldwide. The parties overlapped and it was impossible to try not to miss anything. But the magic was in the quality no matter where you danced.
It is important to first highlight OFFSónar, already consolidated, and its incredible schedule for these days. The event once again transformed Poble Espanyol into the only stage for exclusive showcases with artists from all over the world. It brought together nine parties over four days in unique spaces alongside other events taking place across the city.
Next, we’ll take a tour of the ones we liked the most:
On Thursday we started with the showcase of Guy J’s label Lost and Found. The Israeli DJ, an icon of progressive house, showed why his imprint and artists are at the pinnacle of the genre and got us vibrating at La Terrazza along with solid sets from Guy Mantzur, Henry Saiz and Nickoizzo.
Next door, OffSónar started the journey with WooMoon and Storytellers, who enchanted the monastery and other special stages. They built an idyllic space where circus performances, giant mandalas and fantastical creatures came together in this ultra-sensory party, to which the music fits perfectly.
There were great performances from Audiofly, Blond:ish, Jan Blomqvist, Satori, Monolink and Rampue wowing the audience with their sets, followed by a grand finale with Luciano and Damian Lazarus on two separate stages. We were torn between the Chilean artist’s signature organic house sound and the Crosstown Rebels boss’ exquisite selection of techno and deep house, who kept the crowd smiling until the end of the night.
Early on Friday we heard the call of techno. Swedish imprint Drumcode, run by Adam Beyer, showcased a sold out sign and filled Poble Espanyol’s Plaza Mayor with masterful performances from Charlotte de Witte, llario Alicante, ANNA, Ida Engberg and an exclusive never-before-seen-before dem End of Adam Beyer back to back Enrico Sangiuliano.
Two classic labels have now joined forces and brought out the best in each; Carl Craig’s mythical label Detroit Love and Amsterdam’s Rush Hour, two heavyweights for a heartfelt homage to global techno and house. The Detroit family got the crowd pumping with DJ Stingray, Moodymann, Wajeed, Holographic and finally Craig, who started his set by presenting himself as if he was unknown to anyone in the crowd and the Night like the end master he is.
On the other stage, sparks flew in Amsterdam. Young Marco, I-F, Interstellar Funk, Sassy J, Insanlar and Hunee Back-to-Back Antal had audiences boogie-til-the-drop with their lively selection of house, funk and world music, ending the evening with the joy of sheer dancing.
Both the night and the music at Club Bestial, where German producer HOSH introduced Fryhide to OFFSónar for the first time, continued to be good. One of the most well-known artists from the Diynamic label flooded the venue with his signature deep house and melodic techno sound full of subtle rhythms. He was joined by Tone Depth, Tim Engelhardt, Groj, Simao and 1979.
Then came Saturday and with it one of the most awaited dates, the Innervisions Showcase. This time the entire Poble Nou surrendered to the crew, who took over the entire venue with a very full line-up. Under the direction of Dixon and Âme we also danced to Haai, Frank Weidermann, Trikk, SRVD, Avalon Emerson, Courtesy, John Talabot, Gerd Janson, Kink, Marcel Dettmann, Terr, Marcus Worgull, Or:la, Motor City Drum Ensemble, Apparatus and Job Jobse.
On the main stage in the Plaza, the Catalan John Talabot, as always, offered us a dark and introspective journey, he made us dance and forget the heat! We also witnessed the live match between KiNK and Weidermann with a live back-to-back set, a show that rarely happens and is hard to forget. Finally, the most anticipated performance of the evening, Dixon & Âme, ended the night and flooded the main square without a disappointing second.
There were also great shows in the other locations. At The Monastery, Apparat offered a DJ set meant to smash your sneakers, followed by the Motor City Ensemble, who, as always, brought out our funkier, jazzier side and shared the stage with Dixon all night. Trikk and Âme also took part in a very special back-to-back, mixing live and DJ sets in the early afternoon.
We couldn’t give up on Sunday and decided to visit Outlier, presented by Bonobo, where Agoria, Mathew Johnson (live), Totally Enormous Extinct Dinosaurs and the artist himself captivated the crowd at the Monastery of Poble Espanyol with another of his highlight shows . Without a doubt, Bonobo’s set aroused so much emotion that the audience was surprised by a marriage proposal in the middle of the dance floor. It was a yes, to everyone’s delight, and the musical journey continued.
Lastly we attended the not to be missed Sudbeat party at La Terrraza hosted by Hernan Cattaneo alongside Danny Howells, Nick Varon, Oliverio and Graziano Raffa with whom we continued the night at up and coming local powerhouse Valhalla who along with Graziano Raffa , delivered an uncompromising afterparty for the bravest. The sold out sign hung at both events, with the last few standing enjoying themselves after such an intense week.
