“I’m Yoooolannnnda Vega!” New York’s Lottery Icon Still Chugging Along

She had only been on the job for nine years when I met her, but she was already a New York icon, yet she was down to earth and one of the most humble and kind women I’ve ever met. your name? Yolanda Wega.

Get our free mobile app

Through my job in radio, I had experience dealing with world-renowned musicians. I was hanging out with Pink late one night when I was stuck at work working on a project and she happened to show up while killing time waiting for a flight out of Albany. I’ve had dinner and danced with David Cassady, I’ve played on the floor with a very young Lil Bow Wow. And there was the time when I saw the girls from t.A.T.u. to the mall to have a performance on Center Court and ended up taking them to the wrong mall, making them late for their show (shameful).

Aside from the nervousness I felt realizing the colossal mistake I was making with t.A.T.u. None of my other celebrity encounters troubled me until my encounter with Yolanda Vega. I was representing my radio station at the “I Want To Be Yolanda Vega” contest at Crossgates Mall in Albany in February 1999 when the one and only Yolanda Vega plopped into the chair next to me like she was the most natural thing in the world.

Yolanda was just as contagious as one would imagine, but she was also very down to earth and humble. She took my hands in hers, looked into my eyes and asked if I had any real passion for my job. When I said that, she smiled and told me that I should be ready to fight for it.

This was 1999, when the radio and television industry was still very male-dominated and being a woman on the inside wasn’t for the faint of heart. The unspoken words that this incredible woman didn’t say spoke volumes. She didn’t know me and yet she wanted me to be successful and live my passion. As a young woman just beginning her career in the entertainment industry, those unspoken words meant everything to me.

I have to admit that I haven’t watched the lottery draws in over a dozen years, but over the years I’ve wondered what’s going on in Yolanda’s life. This time, when her name came to mind, I decided to find out. Did you know that when Yolanda started working for the New York State Lottery in 1990, she was only being paid $12 an hour? According to GovSaleries, her salary in 2019 was $112,019. Somehow I expected more.

Yolanda happened to be in the audience at a taping of The Wendy Williams Show in 2019 and mentioned that at the age of 63, Wendy kept getting asked by her friends when she would retire, but that she didn’t feel like it.

In 2010, Yolanda told the New York Daily News, “I’ll keep doing the numbers until I can’t look at them anymore.” Yolanda wasn’t kidding. Now, at age 65, she continues to work for the New York Lottery as a member of the “Draw Team” and still shows up to deliver checks to big lottery winners.

Yolanda has been a part of our lives for over 30 years and I really hope she will still be shouting “I’m Yooooolannnda Vega!”. for another 30.

Other ventures[edit]

Eva’s Kitchen: Cooking with Love for Family and Friends in April 2011 Longoria at a book signing in April 2011

In March 2008, Longoria opened Beso (meaning “kiss” in Spanish) restaurant in Hollywood with her partner and celebrity chef Todd English. The restaurant is on Hollywood Boulevard and is accompanied by Kiss, a Victorian-style nightclub on the floor above.[52] The Hollywood Beso was set to be the focus of a pilot episode for an interim reality series called Beso: Waiting on Fame, scheduled to air on VH1 in late 2010. In 2009, Longoria and various investor partners opened a Beso restaurant with a nightclub above called Eve in the Crystals retail and entertainment district of CityCenter in Las Vegas.

In 2011, Beso LLC, owner of the Vegas restaurant and nightclub venture with approximately $2.5 million in listed assets and Longoria as a 32% shareholder, filed for Chapter 11 protection and commenced bankruptcy proceedings to restructure nearly $5.7 million in debt and other liabilities.[54] On July 28, 2011, the United States Bankruptcy Court for Nevada ordered Longoria to appear in Las Vegas on August 20 for an investigation into the bankrupt restaurant’s finances.

Her first book, Eva’s Kitchen: Cooking with Love for Family and Friends, was published in April 2011.[41] Speaking of food-related promotions, Longoria partnered with Iron Chef Michael Symon in 2012 and 2013 for a promotion for PepsiCo’s Lay’s potato chip contest called “Do Us A Flavor”. The promotion encourages consumers to submit new flavor ideas and fans to vote for their favorite on Facebook. The person who creates the winning flavor will receive $1 million, or one percent of the chip flavor’s net sales.[56]

Philanthropy[ edit ]

In 2006, Longoria founded Eva’s Heroes, a charity that helps young adults with developmental disabilities. The organization is based in San Antonio, Texas and was inspired by her mentally disabled sister.[65]

She is the national spokesperson for PADRES Contra El Cancer.[66] She autographed shoes for the Spirit of Women Red Shoe Celebrity Auction. Longoria also supports the Clothes Off Our Back Foundation, OmniPeace, the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children, the National Stroke Association, Project HOME, and St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.[68] Longoria is Executive Producer of Shine Global Inc.’s documentary The Harvest, which focuses on the 500,000 child farm workers in the United States and promotes awareness and support for the passage of the Children’s Act for Responsible Employment (CARE Act).[69 ][69][] 70][71]

Her other charity, the Eva Longoria Foundation, aims to close the educational gap plaguing Latinas[72] and to end Latino poverty.[73] She has stated, “The Eva Longoria Foundation supports programs that help Latinas excel in school and attend college. We also work to provide career training, mentoring, capital and opportunities for Latina entrepreneurs.”[74] The foundation offers nine weeks of “parent engagement” courses to support Latino parents and a Latina mentoring program and other extracurricular activities[75 ] and loans to support Latina businesses.[76] It is co-funded by philanthropist Howard Buffett[77], son of investor Warren Buffett.

Longoria was named Philanthropist of the Year in 2009 by The Hollywood Reporter for “devoting herself to Latin American causes and giving back to the community.”[78] She performed at Fort Boyard in 2009 and helped raise more than €20,000 for the Make-A-Wish Foundation.[79]

In 2009, Longoria enrolled in a master’s program in Chicano Studies and Political Science at Cal State University, Northridge. According to Longoria, “Because of my involvement with the NCLR and my charity work, I really wanted to have a better, more authentic understanding of what my community was going through so I could help make change happen.”[80] She graduated with a master’s degree in Chicano Studies in May 2013.[81][82]

In September 2009, Longoria was appointed to a bipartisan commission to determine the establishment of a National Museum of American Latinos.[83] In October 2012, Longoria spoke at the McAfee Focus 2012 event where the “issue of security—beyond computers—emerged. Safety includes financial safety, emotional safety, and the other results of Longoria’s philanthropic endeavors.”[84]

In March 2017, Longoria was ranked number 42 in its list of the 200 most influential philanthropists and social entrepreneurs worldwide by the British company Richtopia.[85][86]

In July 2019, Longoria supported the Special Olympics Texas Summer Games hosted by Toyota Field and Morgan’s Wonderland in San Antonio, Texas. The following year, she also supported the San Antonio Food Bank in their COVID relief efforts.[88]

Politics and activism[edit]

Longoria has a keen interest in immigration. She accompanied a border patrol in Arizona and delved into the issues to understand the Mexican and US perspectives.[89] She has called Arizona’s SB 1070 immigration law unconstitutional.[90]

In 2012, Longoria was one of seven Californians named co-chairman of Barack Obama’s re-election campaign.[91] On September 6, she spoke at the 2012 Democratic National Convention, where she supported President Obama’s re-election.[92] In May 2014, she initiated the Latino Victory Project to raise funds for candidates and efforts to get the vote.[93] As executive producer of the documentaries The Harvest and Food Chains, she is a supporter of the Coalition of Immokalee Workers.[94]

In 2014, Longoria endorsed Marianne Williamson for California’s 33rd congressional district. In 2018, Longoria endorsed Beto O’Rourke for the Senate against incumbent Senator Ted Cruz[96] and Collin Allred for the Texas 32nd congressional district against then-incumbent Rep. Pete Sessions.[97]

Longoria spoke at the 2016 Democratic National Convention in Philadelphia on July 26, 2016.[98] In August 2020, she hosted the first night of the 2020 Democratic National Convention, held remotely due to the COVID-19 pandemic.[99]

In preparation for the Georgia runoff, Longoria attended a January 2, 2021 VoteRiders text banking event with America Ferrera to educate Latin American voters about the state’s voter ID laws.[100]

Personal life[edit]

Marriages and children[edit]

Longoria was married to General Hospital star actor Tyler Christopher from 2002 to 2004.

Longoria met Tony Parker, then-San Antonio Spurs point guard, in November 2004. On November 30, 2006, the couple became engaged. They married on July 6, 2007 in public service at a Paris town hall. They had a Catholic wedding ceremony on July 7, 2007 at the Church of Saint-Germain l’Auxerrois in Paris.[103] On November 17, 2010, Longoria filed for divorce from Parker in Los Angeles, citing “irreconcilable differences”. In the divorce filing, Longoria requested that her family name be restored. She also sought spousal support from Parker. The couple had a marriage contract that was signed in June 2007, a month before their wedding, and amended two years later in June 2009.[106]

Longoria told her boyfriend Mario Lopez that she had discovered hundreds of text messages from another woman on her husband’s cell phone.[107] Extra identified the other woman as Erin Barry, then-wife of Brent Barry, Parker’s former teammate, and revealed that the Barrys were also in the process of divorcing. In light of the divorce, Longoria canceled her scheduled appearance at the 2010 American Music Awards. On November 19, 2010, Parker filed for divorce from Longoria in Bexar County, Texas due to “discord or conflict of personality”, starting a legal battle over where the divorce case would be heard. Unlike Longoria’s divorce filing, Parker’s made no mention of a prenuptial agreement, claiming that the parties would “enter into a contract for the division of their estate.” The divorce was finalized in Texas on January 28, 2011, the same day that Longoria’s attorney filed paperwork to dismiss her petition in Los Angeles. Longoria later commented, “I didn’t realize it with Tony back then, but I had become my own version of a desperate housewife.”

On December 13, 2015, Longoria announced her engagement to Mexican businessman José Antonio “Pepe” Bastón Patiño,[112] then president of Televisa, the largest media company in Latin America.[113][114] Bastón and Longoria met on a blind date arranged by a mutual friend in Mexico City. At the time, Bastón did not know who Longoria was and originally declined an invitation to meet her due to his busy schedule. The couple married in Mexico on May 21, 2016.[116][117]

On December 19, 2017, it was reported that Longoria was pregnant with her first child.[118] She gave birth to a son, Santiago “Santi” Enrique Bastón, in 2018.[119][120][121]

Ancestry [edit]

According to research by Harvard professor and Faces of America host Henry Louis Gates Jr. in 2010, Longoria’s oldest identifiable ancestor of Spanish immigrants is her ninth great-grandfather, Lorenzo Suárez de Longoria (née Oviedo, 1592), who was a colonist von was the Viceroyalty of New Spain (modern-day Mexico) in 1603. His family lived in a small village called Llongoria, Belmonte de Miranda, Asturias, Spain. Longoria is the Castilian form of this surname in the Asturian language.

In 1767, her seventh great-grandfather received nearly 4,000 acres (16 km2) of land along the Rio Grande in a land grant from King Charles III. from Spain. The family kept this land for more than a century. After the US-Mexico border was moved south after the Mexican-American War, the country ended up on the American side of the border. Her family had to deal with the influx of settlers into the United States after the Mexican-American War and the American Civil War.

According to DNA testing, Longoria’s overall genetic ancestry is 70% European, 27% Native American, and 3% African.[123] After a computer compared the DNA results of Gates’ dozen guests, tests showed that she was related through human haplogroups to cellist Yo-Yo Ma, who is of Chinese descent.[123] Since females have two X chromosomes and no Y chromosome, Longoria did not inherit her father’s Y-DNA, but she did inherit her mother’s mitochondrial DNA (genetic information passed from mother to child). Longoria’s mtDNA belongs to haplogroup A2, making her a direct descendant of a Native American woman, a Maya from Mexico long before it was Mexico. Her ancestry includes many other Maya on both sides of her family.[124][125] Longoria identifies as “Texican” – a Mexican-American Texan.[124]
