In 1975, at the suggestion of Paramount Pictures executive Barry Diller, Ebersol and NBC President Herbert Schlosser approached Lorne Michaels for help creating a show to fill the Saturday night time slot. Michael’s idea for a variety show featuring high-profile comedy sketches, political satire, and musical performances eventually became Saturday Night Live.
Ebersol was named vice president for late night programming at age 28, becoming NBC’s first vice president under 30. After a brief departure, he returned to SNL as executive producer in 1981 and stayed until 1985, spanning the Eddie Murphy and Billy Crystal eras.[1][9] In 1983, Ebersol founded No Sleep Productions, an independent production company that produced the Emmy-winning NBC shows Friday Night Videos and Later with Bob Costas.[9] Ebersol co-produced the Saturday night main event with Vince McMahon.[1] After leaving SNL in 1985, Ebersol dedicated his time to his production company until returning to NBC in 1989.[9] He served as senior vice president of NBC News.

In 2005, Ebersol was incorporated into both the U.S. Olympic Hall of Fame as well as the Broadcasting & Cable Hall of Fame.[32][33]
In 2008, NBC, along with Chinese film director Zhang Yimou, who served as the event’s creative director, won the Peabody Award for its coverage of the opening ceremony in Beijing.[34] At the SportsBusiness Journal awards ceremony in 2009, Ebersol won Sports Executive of the Year and NBC Sports won Best in Sports Television.[35]
As of April 2009, the six “Commissioners of American Sport”—Roger Goodell (NFL), David Stern (NBA), Bud Selig (MLB), Gary Bettman (NHL), Tim Finchem (PGA Tour) and Brian France (NASCAR)—were Part of a presentation that ended with Muhammad Ali Ebersol presenting the Emmy Award for Lifetime Achievement from the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences.[11]
In May 2010, Ebersol was the inaugural speaker at Sacred Heart University for the 2010 graduating class. He was presented with the Doctor of Human Letters degree by University President Anthony J. Cernera.[36]
Ebersol received the 2014 Paul White Award, the Radio Television Digital News Association’s highest honor.[37]
Personal life[edit]
Ebersol was previously married to former Wheel of Fortune host Susan Stafford from 1976 to 1981. They had no children. He has been married to actress Susan Saint James since 1981.[38] They have three sons together, Charlie, Willie and Teddy, who died in a plane crash in 2004. Saint James has two children from a previous marriage. Has a nephew, Austin Eber, of Owings Mills, MD.
Plane crash 2004[edit]
On November 28, 2004, a private charter jet, a Bombardier Challenger CL-600[39] carrying Ebersol and two of his sons, Charlie and Teddy, crashed while attempting to take off from Montrose Regional Airport in Colorado. The jet’s captain, Luis Polanco, flight attendant Warren T. Richardson III, and Teddy Ebersol were killed. Dick and his older son, Charlie, along with the first officer, survived although seriously injured.[40] Charlie was thrown from the plane and rushed back inside and managed to get his father to safety.[41]
On June 10, 2006, the Teddy Ebersol Field on the Charles River in Boston was dedicated.[42]
