Choreography[ edit ]

McDermott completed his dance training at Broadway Dance Center and has worked as a dancer and choreographer, supporting acts such as Rihanna, Pussycat Dolls and Chris Brown.[6]

radio [edit]

In March 2011 he started as a presenter of Drive Time on radio station XFM.[13] Xfm is known for finding and breaking presentation talent. Past presenters have included Dermot O’Leary, Russell Brand, Alex Zane, Ricky Gervais, Simon Amstell and Jimmy Carr. In its first year, McDermott’s show was syndicated to Xfm Manchester. Shortly thereafter, he was nominated for “Best Newcomer” at the Arqiva-sponsored national commercial radio awards.[14] In April 2012, while discussing Greg James’ new appointment to BBC Radio1 Drivetime, The Guardian newspaper claimed that McDermott’s show was the best DriveTime radio show of its genre in the UK.

His final show with the channel aired on December 21, 2012. He said: “I left XFM because I had been doing it for two years. It’s a great place to work with great people, but I’ve had to turn down several pilots because of work. So I decided to focus on TV work and for that I had to leave Xfm. And then I got [Celebrity Super Spa]. Music and Breakfast host Danny Wallace – although McDermott noted in a Twitter post shortly after he left that his final listenerships were a record high. Although online speculation suggested a move to BBC Radio 1, it never materialized.

Three months later, it was announced that he would be deputizing for Louise McSharry on the network’s weekday evening slot for the next few months while she was undergoing cancer treatment.[18] In September 2015, McDermott took over the Colm Hayes drive-by show on a two-year deal.

On 8 March 2021, RTÉ officially confirmed that McDermott had left his 2FM role after three weeks of “unplanned leave” and would not be returning due to his contract expiring.

Mental Health Advocacy[edit]

McDermott lectures on mental illness at various events across Ireland.[23] In 2014, he directed a self-harm video for Pieta House, in which he referred to his own experience and later explained, “Seeing firsthand what they’re up to, I found it a bit disingenuous to preach their merits without being honest being my own thing… I don’t seek praise other than feeling like it was worth it. You don’t want to do that and let it slip under the radar too. Not that you’re looking for attention… If you feel like you’re about to show yourself out there… and you know you might upset people close to you, it’s nice to feel that it was worth it.”.[23]

Personal life[edit]

On March 2, 2022, McDermott shared a letter on social media issued by attorneys representing a client who they say made “false allegations against him” that “arised out of a relationship, which they had some years before”. The letter further acknowledged that the client “contrary to her initial claims, was above the age of consent at all times that she and Mr. McDermott met or engaged in a physical relationship.” McDermott said he hopes sharing the letter can “close that chapter.” [24] [25] [26] McDermott subsequently deactivated his Twitter account.

Accuser of former RTÉ 2FM presenter Eoghan McDermott accepts she was at age of consent when they had physical relationship

Former 2fm presenter Eoghan McDermott has broken his silence for the first time after suddenly quitting his high-profile job at the station a year ago.

In February 2021, he left his breakfast show, which he co-hosted with Doireann Garrihy, and no reason was given for his departure.

This afternoon he posted to social media for the first time in a year.

He wrote: “False allegations were made against me a few months ago. While these claims have not been investigated or verified, they have been widely circulated, the implications of which I am still processing. I hope that the following can close this chapter.

“Upon request and out of consideration for the other party to the dispute, I will not comment further on this matter.”

Mr McDermott accompanied the Twitter post with a letter from Mary Cowhey Solicitors, representing his accuser, to his own attorney, Paul Tweed.

The letter states that her client made false allegations against the moderator in a series of internet posts and a series of tweets sent via an anonymous Twitter account in March 2021.

“These comments stemmed from a relationship they had in or around October 2010,” the statement said.

“Our client accepts that there were a number of serious falsehoods contained in her publications that may have caused distress to her client and those closest to her.

“Our client sincerely regrets the publication of the inaccuracies contained in these publications and acknowledges that they have had an adverse effect on your client and those close to him.

“These inaccuracies were the product of the elapsed time since 2010 and the tweets published. They also stemmed from undue reliance on incorrect information from third parties.”

It went on to say that her client accepts that she was of legal age at the time she and Mr. McDermott met or entered into a physical relationship, contrary to what was originally claimed.

“She acknowledges the seriousness of this false claim and unequivocally retracts it. Our client also fully accepts that she falsely claimed that her client fled the country based on these claims,” she adds.

Her client’s suggestions that members of his family were staying in An Garda Síochána were also “inaccurate and unfounded”.

They also said their client accepts that it is wrong to tweet and retweet unsubstantiated claims of third-party sexual assault, as well as to make “completely false” claims that he was involved in illegal drug use in a work-related video.

“Our client regrets her actions and recognizes that her actions have caused and continue to cause harm and suffering to her client and those close to her,” she added.

Her client accepts that Mr McDermott disputes her version of what happened during their relationship.

“Our client has deleted the statements she posted on both Twitter and Reddit and undertakes not to repost them in any forum, public or private,” it reads.

Separately, Mr McDermott launched a defamation case against Twitter in the High Court on Tuesday.

He is being represented in this matter by the Dublin law firm of Harringtons LLP. Attorney David Harrington said the company had no comment to make at this time.

Asked about the possibility of Mr McDermott returning to RTÉ following his statement today, an RTÉ spokesman said he had “no comment to make”.

After a long hiatus, Eoghan McDermott has broken his silence on social media with a post on his Instagram Stories.

The DJ and TV presenter has been silent on the radio for the past few months because he has refrained from postings. However, on Friday night he shared a sweet snap of his dog wrapped in a blanket with his followers.

Eoghan has been quiet on social media since his departure from RTE 2FM in 2021.

RTE previously shared a statement on his departure, saying:

“RTÉ confirms that Eoghan McDermott will not be returning to RTÉ 2FM,” the statement said.

“His contract is about to expire. RTÉ is developing a new direction for the 2FM Breakfast Show to be announced in the coming weeks. Doireann Garrihy will remain with the show.”

The former radio host has also deactivated his Twitter account after taking legal action against the social media giant in the High Court.

Mr McDermott filed papers against Twitter International Unlimited Company, but it is unclear what the lawsuit relates to.

His solicitors, Dublin-based firm Harringtons, confirmed that Mr McDermott had taken on the case.

The 38-year-old quit his role as co-host of RTÉ’s breakfast show in March 2021 after a brief period of unplanned annual leave after more than six years with the station.

He previously presented at Spin FM and worked in London for some time before joining RTÉ in 2014.
