AN0M bust Hakan Ayik goes into hiding after encouraging global underworld to use app

An Australian drug lord who inadvertently gave police direct access to the criminal underworld by encouraging his colleagues to use the encrypted AN0M messaging app has abandoned his family to go into hiding.

Hakan Ayik, 42, remains Australia’s most wanted man after fleeing Sydney for Turkey more than a decade ago when he was linked to a $230million heroin import syndicate.

He has now left his glamorous Dutch wife Fleur Messelink, two young sons and his home in the upscale Istanbul suburb of Bestikas for an undisclosed location.

Just three weeks ago, the Australian Federal Police outed him as a key figure in promoting AN0M to crime bosses around the world.

He was used as an “influencer” to promote the app, which marketed itself as “made by criminals for criminals” but was actually run by the FBI and distributed to the underworld by police informants.

Hakam Ayik has reportedly left his wife Fleur Messelink (pictured) and their two children. AFP has warned that Ayik’s family could be in danger after the stab

A total of 25 million messages were sent via the app – all of which were intercepted by the authorities.

So far, 283 people have been arrested in Australia based on the app’s information, and 1,100 worldwide.

Authorities warn that Ayik is likely a scarred man for his role in spreading the app, effectively sentenced to potentially decades in prison for his colleagues.

Ayik is unlikely to have left Turkey entirely, News Corp reports, as he is under international scrutiny.

The Australian Federal Police declined to comment on their findings on Ayik’s whereabouts.

AN0M news released by the US Department of Justice shows crime figures talking about a shipment of drugs that was said to be thrown over a boat and then picked up

AFP called on Ayik, who is allegedly still orchestrating huge shipments of cocaine and meth to Australia from his base in Turkey, to surrender.

“Given the threat he faces, he’s best off confronting us as soon as possible,” said Commissioner Kershaw.

“He was one of the coordinators of this particular device, so essentially he set up his own colleagues.”

Terry Goldsworthy, associate professor of criminology at Bond University and a former senior police officer, said that resentment against Ayik over the app’s accidental distribution “would depend on individuals and how much blame they put on him”.

But he said it was unlikely Ayik would heed police advice and turn himself in.

Mark Lauchs, associate professor of criminology at Queensland University of Technology, said there was a real risk Ayik would be the victim of a future revenge attack.

“You have to see that they function a lot more like the TV show Real Housewives than a group of lawyers sitting around discussing a case,” he said.

“Any secret group like this is full of conspiracy theorists, they’re always at each other. There is paranoia.

“Hakan Ayik will not use his social media: ‘I have a fight with one of the organized crime groups and I need someone to handle it.’ He has to handle this himself.”

Whether family members of Ayik and others still living in Australia are at risk is unclear, crime experts said, but the “ethics” of the criminal underworld could prevent them from being targeted.

“There was a story about a mafioso in Sicily who went to the police and they started killing one family member after another until he finally came out of hiding,” recalled Prof. Lauchs.

“They had killed 35 of his family members before he showed up.

“If they were to drive by in Australia and even endanger, let alone kill, family members, most of them would say, ‘No way, you can’t do that’. Overseas, on the other hand, they have to deal with a much more ruthless environment.

“The men involved in this activity have certain principles and ethics,” said another professor.

“One of those is not messing with people’s families, and it means the chances of [families being targeted] are small, but not zero.

“I think we’re in new territory and we don’t yet know what’s going to happen.”

Professor Goldsworthy felt that those who cooperated with Operation Ironside in exchange for reduced prison time were most at risk.

“We saw mention of a Confidential Human Source (CHS) in the FBI affidavits,” he said.

“Given the impact this operation is having on organized crime, the CHS would be someone who would need long-term protection now.”

Texts released after Australia’s biggest underworld bust show crime bosses so confident their communications on the police-developed ‘AN0M’ app were secret that they brazenly discussed huge shipments of drugs.

Australian, US and European authorities carried out raids around the world on Tuesday, with 4,000 police officers in Australia arresting 224 organized crime suspects and seizing tons of drugs, millions in cash and other contraband and luxury goods in Operation Ironside.

Ayik’s former buddy and ex-Comancheros biker leader Mark Buddle, who is said to have been in Iraq last, is also said to have crushed his criminal ventures with the raids.

“He would have been on the network and a lot of his dealings would have been caught,” a senior, unnamed NSW police officer told the Daily Telegraph of Buddle.

Criminals were so convinced that the encrypted messages were beyond the reach of law enforcement that they openly organized and discussed criminal activity.

For example, on January 4, 2020, two Australian employees discussing a cocaine smuggling operation exchanged the following messages:

‘Think he got it,’ said one to the other, before the second replied, ‘You’re dreaming. Do you think so? For which he offers it to you’.

The first person then sent a photo of hundreds of pounds of cocaine with Batman stickers on the packaging.

Two months later, on March 23 last year, an Australian user and an unidentified person exchanged messages about the price of cocaine.

Millions of dollars in assets have been confiscated, including this sparkling collection of expensive watches

Mafia figures and motorcyclists bought ANoM-branded phones with encrypted messaging technology already downloaded. When criminals used the phones, the messages were intercepted by law enforcement from the Australian Federal Police

“Ok sweetie I got a little job that showed up for the block. 2 kg will be put in the sealed envelopes of the French diplomats from Bogota (Colombia),” wrote the third Australian.

The news also said the Colombian traders would take 50 percent of the profits, while four others would share the remaining half.

The same Australian then informed the unidentified person that the drug dumping could happen weekly, before sending three photos of cocaine and French diplomatic bags.

While surveillance of communications platform AN0M culminated in the recent raids, it had led to the arrests of more than 220 Australian organized crime figures dating back to 2018.

The perpetrators are variously linked to the Australian-based Italian Mafia, outlaw motorcycle gangs, Asian crime syndicates and Albanian organized crime.

The messages found on the platform revealed 21 assassination plots, arms distribution activities and mass drug trafficking, according to the Australian Federal Police.

The app was available by invitation only as of Tuesday morning – before the page was sensationally removed and replaced with an FBI warning
