Elaine Schaffer Murder Where Is Richard Cronin Now

When Elaine Schaffer disappeared from her Colorado Springs home in January 1988, her daughter wasted no time in calling the police. However, the missing person’s case was soon escalated to a murder investigation when authorities stumbled upon Elaine’s body, shot in a field. “Homicide Hunter: Lt. Investigation Discovery’s Joe Kenda: Good Instinct chronicles the brutal murder and shows how police followed a trail of similar cases straight to the perpetrator. If this case piques your curiosity and you want to know where Elaine’s killer is currently located, you’ve come to the right place.

How did Elaine Schaffer die?

A loving mother of 5, Elaine lived in her Colorado Springs home with her pregnant daughter. The show mentioned that she recently got divorced and is looking forward to a brighter future. Neighbors and family described Elaine as a gentle person who loved helping others and was always seen with a smile on her face. She was incredibly close to all of her children.

Elaine normally worked late nights and did so on January 20, 1988. Just before she got home from work, Elaine received a call from her daughter who mentioned that she wanted ice cream. Although Elaine promised she’d come home with the ice cream soon, the grandmother-to-be never returned that night. Anxious and worried, her daughter tried to contact Elaine, but to no avail. She then went to the police to report her mother missing.

The police jumped into action immediately and began scouring the area looking for Elaine. Although her car was soon found in a local supermarket parking lot, the missing woman was nowhere to be found. Things soon came to a head, however, when authorities stumbled upon Elaine’s body in a roadside field. It appeared she was injured near the road and dragged into the field before being shot with a shotgun. There were shotgun shells all over her body, and while an autopsy found the gunshot wounds to be the cause of her death, it also confirmed that Elaine was sexually abused prior to her murder.

Who Killed Elaine Schaffer?

The first investigations were quite difficult, because although the police had to follow several leads, most of them ended in dead ends. On the other hand, there wasn’t much forensic evidence to link a person of interest to the crime, prompting authorities to look harder for evidence. Police officers conducted numerous interrogations, attempted to compile a list of suspects, and even used most of their investigative techniques, but to no avail.

According to the show, however, in the midst of the investigation, one of the officers learned of an attempted kidnapping that appeared to be very similar to Elaine’s murder. While searching for information about this incident, authorities were also informed of a third attempt of the same kind. In each incident, single women were attacked in grocery store parking lots, leading police to wonder if this was the person responsible for Elaine’s murder.

According to the show, detectives had a major breakthrough when the kidnapping suspect was arrested on an unrelated charge. The person of interest has been identified as Richard Cronin, and the show mentioned how he recently lost his job and embarked on a path of drug and alcohol abuse. Additionally, his wife contacted police and turned over her husband’s 12-gauge shotgun, which was later confirmed to be the same one used in Elaine’s murder.

Surprisingly, the gun turned out to be a police shotgun, which the show said was reported stolen from Richard’s previous place of work. As the final nail in the coffin, pubic hair found on Elaine’s body came back as a match to Richard’s DNA, thus confirming him as the killer. With concrete evidence against their suspect, police arrested Richard Cronin and charged him with murder.

Where is Richard Cronin now?

Once tried, Richard Cronin pleaded guilty to felony murder and was sentenced to life imprisonment in 1988. Unfortunately, he has since disappeared from the radar and apparently prefers to maintain a private life. Additionally, neither the show nor the state prison records contain any information about Richard, making his current whereabouts a complete mystery.

DOC Killer with commuted life sentence faces return to prison after Colorado Springs DUI arrest

A man whose life sentence was commuted in 2011 for the 1988 killing of his mother faces a return to prison after he was arrested in a crash in Colorado Springs on Wednesday morning.

One person was seriously injured in the wreck.

Charles Eddie Limbrick Jr., 41, was arrested on suspicion of robbery, which constitutes a felony, and drunk driving. Police say he was driving a Dodge van when he left a Chrysler Pacifica and pushed the vehicle through an intersection.

While Limbrick could face more jail terms for a probation violation, it wasn’t immediately clear Thursday what his new sentence might be, the Department of Corrections said. There are a variety of options the parole board has in deciding how to handle Limbrick’s case, the department said.

“The parole board will wait until it makes a final decision on the new case,” said Brandon Shaffer, chairman of the parole board. “If he is convicted, we will hold a revocation hearing where we will consider revoking his parole. There is broad discretion and we will consider all factors.”

Shaffer said the process could be lengthy and he couldn’t give an exact timeline for how it might unfold.

Limbrick had been sentenced to life in prison without parole before his sentence was commuted. He could face reinstatement of that life sentence, said Adrienne Jacobson, a DOC spokeswoman.

A Limbrick parole board hearing has yet to be scheduled. He was scheduled to complete his parole on July 1, 2016, by which time he would have been fully released from the state prison system.

Colorado Springs Police said the accident happened around 11:15 a.m. Wednesday near the intersection of Circle Drive and Constitution Avenue.

“Both vehicles were disabled by the collision and stopped north of the intersection,” police said. The driver of the Pacifica was seriously injured.

El Paso County Jail records show that Limbrick is being held without bail on parole.

Limbrick was 15 when he murdered his mother, 42-year-old Betty Limbrick, at her home in Colorado Springs. Police said two of the boy’s .357 Magnum shots hit his mother, one of which hit her in the head.

A friend of the boy who witnessed the crime said after Charles Limbrick fired the revolver, he heard Betty Limbrick say, “Chuckie, I love you, but you just killed me.”

Prosecutors said Charles Limbrick killed his mother because she was angry with him for drinking, driving and staying out late. He was charged as an adult and sentenced to life imprisonment.

Limbrick served 23 years before his sentence was commuted by former Gov. Bill Ritter. The conversion came when Ritter pardoned or commuted the sentences of 29 convicts a week before leaving office.

“Having carefully reviewed each of these cases, I believe it serves the interests of the judiciary — without compromising public safety — to grant these pardons and commutations,” Ritter said at the time.

Limbrick’s release was the result of a sentence conversion supported by a number of state officials. Limbrick made headlines in prison for his dedication to religious life, particularly Christian music, while in prison.

John Suthers, a former Colorado Attorney General and current Colorado Springs mayoral candidate, prosecuted the case as El Paso County District Attorney in 1989. He called Limbrick’s arrest “tragic” and said “he did tremendously well in prison.”

“For a 15-year-old, that’s a lot of time,” Suthers, who supported the commuted sentences, said of Limbrick’s time in prison. “I said at the time (on his probation), ‘If he makes it, it’s probably time to give him a chance.'”

Limbrick played a piano tribute at the 2013 service for slain Department of Corrections Executive Director Tom Clements.

“I just needed encouragement that I could do it,” Limbrick said after Clements’ service. “He believed in us. He said he believed in me. That’s huge.”

Limbrick’s arrest was first reported by The Gazette in Colorado Springs.
