Steven And Michelle Andrews Murdered By Fred Cooper In Gateway
Two days after Christmas 2005, an early morning emergency call was made in the small community of Gateway, Florida. There was a faint rustling on the line and the dispatcher heard a toddler crying. Deputies from the Lee County Sheriff’s Office conducted a wellness check at the address.
They found a 2-year-old wandering through the home of Steven and Michelle Andrews, a young couple who had moved to the area from Minnesota about a year ago. The boy’s clothes were covered in blood. The living room was still littered with gifts and festive decorations, detective Gabrielle Suboh recalled, but there was an icy stillness in the air.
In the bedroom, Steven lay face down on a bloodstained mattress with a hole in his head. Michelle was completely nude and her body was twisted into a “grotesque” position, authorities said, at the foot of the bed. Neighbors and investigators alike were stunned: Who would do such a thing to a couple in their prime?
Steven and Michelle were looking for a professional and personal fresh start in Gateway, friends recalled on ‘Homicide for the Holidays’, which aired Saturdays at 7/6c on Oxygen. Before they moved from Minnesota, Michelle had a brief extramarital affair, but the couple’s relationship was on the mend, according to Homicide for the Holidays.
Tensions rose when Steven seemed to get close to a secretary at his new landscape architecture firm named Kellie Ballew. The secretary bought Steven an expensive keychain for his new car, and investigators say there was a confrontation between the women at a Christmas party weeks before the murder.
Authorities initially checked Ballew, and during interviews she admitted that she and Steven were indeed involved in a sexual relationship. She also explained that she recently ended a six-year relationship with boyfriend Fred Cooper.
Meanwhile, the investigators are also continuing to examine the scant evidence from the night of the murder: Neighbors reported hearing a loud motorcycle and one saw the driver – a man in a camouflage hoodie. Eventually, these two investigative avenues converged.
On the night of December 26, they pulled surveillance footage from nearby businesses and tracked the mystery motorcyclist to a 7-11 at a time when the couple was murdered. Then a tip came from a local garage.
On December 28, one of the mechanics observed a colleague working hard to scrub his camouflage hoodie clean. He pulled out the liner and used an exhaustive array of cleaning supplies, cleaning the hoodie for more than an hour, the mechanic told police.
The hoodie-wearing mechanic was Fred Cooper.
Detectives dragged Cooper in for an interview and Ballew’s ex-boyfriend was visibly tense, according to Homicide for the Holidays. He insisted he was at his mother’s house throughout the evening of December 27, but he allowed authorities to take a DNA swab. No charges were brought pending the results – but he was under 24-hour surveillance.
In January 2006, after Cooper’s DNA was compared to samples found under Michelle’s fingernails, Orlando authorities arrested him.
Cooper wasn’t brought to trial until 2008, and when he did, he took the unusual step of testifying in his own defense. There he dropped a bombshell, claiming that the DNA under Michelle’s fingernails came from the two who had sex on December 26, 2005. They “consoled each other,” Cooper claimed.
After hours of deliberations resulted in a hung jury, a new trial began four months later. This time, lawyers on both sides did their best, according to Homicide for the Holidays. However, Cooper’s defense had a fatal flaw: he changed details in his story and bolstered prosecutors’ case that he killed Steven out of jealousy over the landscape architect’s affair with his former girlfriend Ballew.
After six hours of deliberation, the jury found Cooper guilty of two counts of first-degree murder and one count of burglary with assault and assault while armed. He was later sentenced to three life sentences without the possibility of parole.
“I was satisfied. Life without parole is great,” the Andrews’ neighbor Dean Harris told the producers. “Let him suffer. Death would be too easy for him.”

The murder of Steven and Michelle Andrews is one of the most twisted and brutal murders in Fort Myers, Florida. The couple was killed just two days after Christmas, on December 27, 2005, in their home with their young son. When police arrived after a mysterious 911 call informed them that something was wrong at the home, they found Michelle’s body stretched out, naked, at the foot of the bed while Steven lay face down in bed, shot to death. Blood covered the floor and walls of the room as the crime scene painted a chilling picture at their home in Gateway.
A happy couple who moved to Fort Myers just a year ago, neighbors just couldn’t understand why someone would want to kill them – and so brutally. Investigators found no alien DNA in their master bedroom and the rest of the house, leading them to suspect a murder-suicide case. The truth, however, hid in plain sight.

When investigators looked around the house, they found a broken sliding door — and they began hunting down an intruder’s angle. Neighbors spoke about the couple being very social and having people over during the holiday season that year. They thought nothing of it at the time, but after the murders, a neighbor recalled seeing a man in a camouflage jacket and a motorcycle at their home on the day of the murder.

An affair went wrong
Steven was a project manager at a Bonita Springs landscaping company while Michelle was a nutritionist. They had a 2 year old son. On the outside, they were a picture book family. But sometimes Steven had bought a really expensive car before the murder and a co-worker, Kelly Ballew, had given him an equally expensive car keychain – something Michelle found odd.
To save her marriage, she had contacted Kelly’s ex, Fred Cooper, who worked as a motorcycle mechanic for Sun Sports Cycle & Watercraft on the Metro Parkway in Fort Myers, Bonita Springs. Kelly and Fred had just broken up after a very long relationship and one child. Michelle had hoped that talking to him would help her and Steven stay together. But it wouldn’t be like that.

Kelly and Steven worked together. They were close and both shared their frustrations with their respective relationships. On the day they were killed, Steven had emailed Kelly about their future together, but he had no idea what was to come. As they went to sleep, Fred rode in, sneaked in and fired a bullet at Steven, killing him instantly.

When Michelle woke up he punched her in the head and face and then choked her before undressing and positioning her to send a message. During the scuffle, he left his DNA in Michelle’s fingernails and dress, which investigators later matched to him.
Some people in the community still believe it was Fred who dialed 911 after feeling remorse looking at the couple’s orphan. While others say it was the little boy who called 911. The only voice emergency services heard on the line was the couple’s two-year-old son Luke, who said “mom” many times.
Fred was sentenced to life imprisonment in 2009. He also has a criminal history that began in 1994 when the state sentenced him to three years in prison for burglary and vandalization of a cabin. That ruling included a court order for him to undergo mental health evaluation and treatment. He served two years, but it wasn’t long before Martin County legislators arrested him again – this time for breaking into a junkyard. After almost three and a half years in prison, the Department of Corrections released him in 1999. He was on parole until 2000.
