An iconic newswoman in Miami

For nearly four decades, Alina Mayo Azze has been welcomed into the living rooms of people watching Spanish-language news in the Miami market.

Hosting Univision’s local Noticias 23 at 6pm, Mayo Azze has had an amazing career with a rock-solid reputation for fairness and impeccable delivery.

But another title Mayo Azze proudly wears is that of Miami Hurricane. In 1981 she graduated from the College of Arts and Sciences at the University of Miami with a degree in broadcast journalism. This was before the School of Communication was founded.

Over the course of her distinguished career, she has interviewed presidents, covered hurricanes, crime and Miami politics, and traveled to far-flung locations for a variety of assignments. But she says it all started at UM.

“Those were wonderful years,” she said at Newsport Studios, where she works. “I had the best professors at UM.”

Among those professors: the legendary Judy Wallace, who taught broadcast journalism, worked in the industry and was a distinguished language coach; and Fred Mooke, executive producer of then-#1 news show, The Ralph Renick Report.

At the time, Mayo Azze was one of four students selected by Mooke to take part in a special news series called The Young Journalists.

“Imagine I did an article, wrote it, edited it, and it appeared in the Ralph Renick Report,” Mayo Azze said. “He even said our name on the air.”

In order to go on the air, young Alina needed some adjustments. She was extremely shy. Her father, Ricardo Mayo, who had worked in the pharmaceutical industry, wanted her to study pharmacy. But Mayo Azze never imagined handing out pills her whole life.

A career day at her high school, Our Lady of Lourdes Academy, was to change her life.

“Someone came to talk to us about TV news,” she said. “And I said that sounds like fun.”

When her parents heard about her decision to become a broadcast journalist, they were shocked.

“My dad said, ‘You’re going to starve,'” she said, adding that they also told her, “You don’t speak to anyone and you plan to speak to thousands of people on camera?”

But Mayo Azze was determined, and she loved the camera.

“I knew I had to overcome it (my shyness),” she said. “If a camera turns on, I can’t mess anything up. You just have to do it.”

Marlene May, one of Mayo Azze’s closest friends who attended Our Lady of Lourdes Academy and UM with her, recalls the first time Mayo Azze was anchored in her television production class.

“She was wearing a red blouse at the time,” said May, who also got into radio journalism. “And the moment she came out on screen, I knew Alina had that ‘it’ factor. Her presence just jumped off the screen.”

That “it” factor may have played a role in getting her first job just two months after graduation. She started out as a reporter for Channel 23, when it was the only Spanish language channel out there.

Gustavo Godoy, former Channel 23 news director and her first boss, said of her: “She is a person of integrity, a true professional. In a business that can be cutthroat, I’ve never heard her speak ill of anyone.”

Mayo Azze is known for her composure and professionalism in front of the camera. Filming live tragedies like last year’s Parkland shooting that killed 17 people brought Mayo Azze’s demeanor and knowledge to the fore.

“The most important thing is to have respect for the spectator,” Mayo Azze said. “Always remember that you can wreak havoc depending on your delivery. So give only the facts, never your opinions, and rely on the reporters out there to get the information or whatever the producer feeds you.”

This professionalism and journalistic integrity are at the heart of her daily work, along with her co-host Ambrosio Hernandez. When she speaks to students looking to get into journalism, she cautions against skipping the basics.

“I always recommend students get their college degree in journalism,” she said. “They teach you the basics of journalism and the ethical side. If you don’t, one day you will burn yourself. If you make a mistake in the air, you can’t take it back.”

Mayo Azze and her husband Jorge, also a UM alumnus who graduated from the School of Architecture in 1981, often return to campus, primarily for UM baseball games. They were both Grand Marshals for Graduation during UM’s inception in 2009.
