Fraternal American rampages/serial killers – 1971 & 1979
Linwood Earl Briley, James Dyral Briley Jr., and Anthony Ray Briley were a sibling trio of serial killers, rapists, and robbers responsible for a 1979 murder and robbery spree that took place in Richmond, Virginia.
Linwood murdered a woman in 1971 and spent a year in a reform school. In 1979, the three siblings (with the help of an accomplice, Duncan Eric Meekins) went on a killing spree in their hometown of Richmond, killing at least eleven people and leaving two survivors who escaped unharmed. Linwood and James were sentenced to death.[1] In 1984, the two escaped death row with four other inmates and were arrested again within three weeks. Linwood and James were executed in the electric chair in 1984 and 1985, respectively. Brother Anthony and accomplice Meekins are both still imprisoned.
Early lives[edit]
The three Briley brothers Linwood Earl (March 26, 1954 – October 12, 1984), James Dyral Jr. (June 6, 1956 – April 18, 1985) and Anthony Ray (born February 17, 1958) were raised by their parents , James Dyral Briley Sr. and Bertha, in the Highland Park neighborhood of Richmond. Her eldest brother, Edward Jerome “Boot” (July 7, 1952 – November 19, 2020), left home to live with relatives in North Carolina in his early teens and was not involved in his younger brothers’ later criminal activities . Along with their younger brother Anthony, Linwood and James were seen by older neighbors as youngsters who would help them fix cars or mow lawns. The brothers collected exotic pets like tarantulas, piranhas, and boa constrictors. When the brothers reached their teens, Bertha and James split up and she moved away. James Dyral Briley Sr., reportedly the only person the brothers feared, padlocked his bedroom door from the inside overnight.[3]
First murder[edit]
On January 28, 1971, Linwood’s first murder was committed at the age of 16. Home alone, Linwood fatally shot Orline Christian, a 57-year-old neighbor, with a rifle from his bedroom window as she was hanging laundry on a clothesline. The crime went almost unidentified, but her relatives noticed a small bloody spot under her armpit on inspection and asked an undertaker to examine the body again. A second examination discovered a small-caliber gunshot wound under her armpit.
A detective stood in Christian’s backyard and used a sheet of plywood to depict her body, with a hole cut out to depict the wound. He determined that the bullet came from the Briley residence. That’s where the murder weapon was found, and Linwood admitted the crime, saying, “I heard she had heart problems, she would have died soon anyway.” Linwood was sent to a reform school to serve a year in prison for murder. James followed his path and at the same age was sentenced to juvenile detention for shooting at a police officer during a pursuit.[4][5]
killing spree [edit]
In 1979, the three Briley brothers and an accomplice, Duncan Eric Meekins, began a seven-month spree of random killings that terrorized the city and surrounding region.[6]
Their first attack occurred on March 12, 1979, when Linwood knocked on the door of Henrico County couple William and Virginia Bucher. Claiming that he was having trouble with the car and had to use her phone, Linwood ended up breaking into her home. He held the couple at gunpoint and waved Anthony inside. The two Brileys tied up the couple and robbed the house, dousing each room with kerosene after stripping it of valuables. As they were leaving, a lit match was thrown at the gasoline. The two hastily packed their stolen loot — a television, CB radio, .32 pistol and jewelry — into their trunk and drove out of the area. William Bucher managed to free himself and his wife from their bonds, which Meekins had apparently not tightened enough, and escape just before the house bursts into flames. They would be the sole survivors of the killing spree, although their cat perished in the flames.
On March 21, Michael McDuffie, a vending machine serviceman, was attacked, shot, and robbed at his suburban home by the Brileys.
Ten days later, on March 31, Linwood shot and killed 28-year-old Edric Alvin Clark over a drug dispute involving Meekins.[7]
On April 9, the brothers followed 76-year-old Mary Gowen from her babysitting job across town. They followed her to her home, beat, raped, robbed and shot her. They escaped from the residence with many of their valuables.
The gang spotted seventeen-year-old Christopher Philips hanging around Linwood’s parked car on July 4. The gang, suspecting he might have tried to steal the vehicle, surrounded him and dragged him into a nearby backyard. There the three brothers wrestle him to the ground. When Philips screamed for help, Linwood killed him by dropping a concrete block on his skull.
On September 14, disc jockey John Harvey “Johnny G.” Gallaher performed with his band at a South Richmond nightclub. When he went outside for a break between sets, he accidentally ended up right in the hands of the Brileys. After unsuccessfully searching the city for a victim all night, they decided to lie in wait for whoever might happen to step outside. Gallaher was attacked by Linwood and put in the trunk of his own Lincoln Continental. He was then driven to the ruins of a Mayo Island paper mill in the middle of the James River, where he was removed from the trunk of his car and shot in the head at point-blank range. Six dollars were taken from his wallet and divided. Gallaher’s body was then thrown into the river. The remains were found two days later. When Linwood was arrested months later, he was still wearing a ring that had been stolen from Gallaher’s hand.
On September 30, 62-year-old private nurse Mary Wilfong was followed home to her Richmond apartment. The brothers surrounded her just outside the door and Linwood beat her to death with a baseball bat. The brothers then broke into her home and robbed her of valuables.
Five days later, on October 5, 75-year-old Blanche Page and her 59-year-old boarder Charles Garner were murdered by the brothers just two blocks from the Briley home on 4th Avenue. Page was bludgeoned to death while Garner was fatally assaulted and stabbed with various weapons including a baseball bat, five knives, scissors and a fork. The scissors and fork were left embedded in Garner’s back.
The victims of the last murders were the family of Harvey Wilkerson, a longtime friend of the brothers. On the morning of October 19, James led his brothers in search of another victim that night, despite promising a judge earlier that day to stay out of trouble while he was on probation. When Wilkerson, who lived with his 23-year-old wife Judy Diane Barton (who was then eight months pregnant) and their 5-year-old son Harvey Wayne Barton, saw the brothers on the street, he instinctively closed and locked his door. This action was noticed by the brothers, who then went to Wilkerson’s doorstep. Fearful of their possible reaction if he denied them entry, Wilkerson let them in.
Both adults in the home were overpowered, handcuffed and tape gagged. Linwood then attacked Judy Barton in the kitchen, where she was raped within earshot of the others. Meekins continued the sexual assault, after which Linwood dragged Barton back into the living room, briefly searched the premises for valuables, and then left the house. The three remaining gang members covered their victims with sheets. James told Meekins, “You’ve got to get yourself one,” after which Meekins took a pistol and fatally shot Wilkerson in the head. James then shot Barton. Harvey followed shortly thereafter.
The police happened to be in the vicinity of the neighborhood and later saw the gang members running down the street at high speed. They didn’t know where the shots had been fired. The bodies are not discovered until three days later, but the brothers are all arrested soon after.[5]
Capture and Detention[edit]
During police questioning, Meekins was offered a plea agreement in exchange for turning the state’s evidence against the Brileys. He accepted the offer and provided a full description of the crime; As a result, he escaped the death penalty and was jailed under an alias in an out-of-state prison outside of the Briley brothers. As part of the agreement, Meekins was sentenced to life in prison plus 80 years, which would allow him to be paroled after serving 12 to 15 years at the time of sentencing.
Anthony Briley, the trio’s youngest brother, was sentenced to a single life sentence with a right to parole for his limited involvement in the murders. Due to Virginia’s “triggerman statute”, both James and Linwood received numerous life sentences for murders committed during the rampage, but only faced capital punishment in cases where they physically committed the actual killing of the victim. Linwood was sentenced to death for the Gallaher kidnapping and murder, while James received two death sentences, one for each of the murders of Judy Barton and her son Harvey. Both were placed on death row at Mecklenburg Correctional Center near Boydton in early 1980.

Linwood and James Briley were the masterminds in an escape of six inmates from Virginia’s death row at Mecklenburg Correctional Center on May 31, 1984. Both Brileys expressed a keen interest in killing the captured guards by dousing them with alcohol and throwing a lit match. Willie Lloyd Turner, another death row inmate (convicted of murder; executed by lethal injection May 25, 1995),[9] stood in James’ way and prevented him from doing so. Meanwhile, Wilbert Lee Evans, who was on death row following his conviction for the murder of Alexandria City Deputy Sheriff William Truesdale, stopped Linwood from raping a nurse. Evans was executed on October 17, 1990, despite pleas for clemency and confirmation from the Mecklenburg guards, who said they owed Evans their lives. Alexandria Commonwealth Attorney John Kloch opposed the pardon, and Democratic Gov. L. Douglas Wilder, the state’s first African-American governor, ultimately opposed the pardon.
The group’s original plan was to flee to Canada. Two inmates, Lem Davis Tuggle Jr. (convicted of the rape and murder of a woman shortly after she was released for another such crime; executed by lethal injection December 12, 1996) and Willie Leroy Jones (convicted of two capital murders; executed September 11, 1992), nearly made it and made it as far as Vermont before she was arrested at gunpoint by police. The group was held at Marble Valley Correctional Facility in Rutland until extradited to Virginia. The Brileys separated from their two remaining fellow fugitives in Philadelphia and lived near their uncle, Johnny Lee Council, north of the city. They were captured on June 19 by a heavily armed group of FBI agents and police officers who determined their whereabouts by tapping their uncle’s phone line.[11][12]
Executions [ edit ]
In a short time, the remaining callings for both brothers expired. A few weeks before his execution, James Briley married Evangeline Grant Redding on March 28, 1985 in a prison ceremony attended by his father, James Sr.[13] The brothers were electrocuted at Virginia State Penitentiary in Richmond; Linwood on October 12, 1984 and James on April 18, 1985. Linwood’s final meal consisted of a grilled fillet steak, a baked potato, green peas, a salad with French dressing, buttered buns, cake, peaches, punch and milk. His last words were “I am innocent.” [14] [15] James’ last meal consisted of fried shrimp with cocktail sauce and a lemon-lime soft drink. In his final moments, he smiled at the Witnesses and asked them twice, “Are you happy?”[16]
Before James was executed, Shirley Barton Hayes, Judy Barton’s mother, asked him to admit his guilt. She said she did not believe in the death penalty, but asked him to confess “that his soul might be right with God.”[17] James also married a writer, Evangeline Grant Redding, who believed in his claims of innocence.[18] ] ]
On the day James was executed, fellow inmates attempted to delay the process by attacking the guards with homemade knives. Nine guards and one inmate were injured.[19]
Linwood was survived by a son, Norman Laquan Ampy, who later served time in prison for a bank robbery and died in 2015. James is survived by three daughters who live in Richmond. The brothers are buried in the council family cemetery grounds in Bethel, North Carolina.[21][22][23]
Anthony Ray Briley has been convicted of four counts of first-degree murder, three of them the murders of the Barton family. He received a life sentence plus 119 years with the possibility of parole.[24] Anthony avoided capital murder charges as it could not be proven that he personally committed any of the murders. He is being held at Augusta Correctional Center, about 20 miles outside of Staunton, Virginia. [25] [Non-primary source needed] To date, all of his applications for parole have been denied by the state parole board, as have Duncan Meekins’s. despite recommendations by former prosecutors Robert J. Rice and Warren Von Schuch, who have cited Meekins’ support in prosecuting and convicting the Briley brothers.[26]

Demario and Demacio Bailey, closely related identical twins known as the “Bailey Boys” in their South Side Charter School community, grew up in a home where schooling and safety were priorities.
A member of the school’s PTA and always getting top grades, the boys’ mother insisted on escorting them to and from Johnson College Prep in Englewood, one of the toughest neighborhoods in town. But like most 15-year-olds, Demario and Demacio wanted more freedom. That’s why their mother recently allowed them to get around more on their own, the boys’ grandmother, Bernice Fitzpatrick, told the Tribune.

Tragedy struck the family on Saturday afternoon when Demario was shot dead trying to defend his brother during an armed robbery while the boys were just a few blocks from their school.
“They were raised to stick together,” Fitzpatrick, 62, said Sunday. “We always said, ‘Take care of your brother, take care of your brother.'”

Carlos Johnson, 17, was charged with first-degree murder in Demario’s murder and another robbery that took place nearby shortly before Demario’s murder, said Cook County Attorney General Sally Daly. Johnson was scheduled to appear at a bond hearing on Monday.
The shooting rocked the charter school community, where parents, teachers and classmates gathered on Sunday to remember Demario, an honor roll student who was described as a kind-hearted boy who stayed out of trouble.
“You hear it all the time (after shootings), ‘That was a good kid,'” said Jack Greenfield, a math teacher and football coach at Johnson, who was Demario’s algebra teacher. “That was actually a really good kid.”
According to a police report, Demario and Demacio had taken the #29 State Street bus to 63rd Street Saturday afternoon, where they got off and walked west through a long, dark viaduct toward the school where Demacio was practicing basketball. Four robbers faced them under the viaduct, the report said.
The robbers told the brothers to “give it up” and began searching their pockets, the police report said. A fight and fight ensued and Demario, who was five minutes older of the twins, saw one of the robbers lying on top of his brother. He rushed to Demacio’s aid, told the attacker to “Get off my brother,” and was reportedly able to push off the robber.
At that point, Demacio saw a gun appear from one of the attackers and heard a gunshot, the report said. He thought Demario was right behind him as he ran away.
“But when he turned around, he didn’t see him,” Fitzpatrick said.
Demacio found his brother on the ground with a gunshot wound to the chest, the police report said. Demario was pronounced dead at the scene minutes later.

The robbers were last seen running towards Wabash Avenue, police said. They said they took in several people for questioning shortly after the shooting, and investigators believe the attackers were responsible for two other armed robberies in the area earlier that same day.
Fitzpatrick called her grandson “honorable.”
“Demario was a brilliant kid, all my grandkids are… just honorable kids,” she said. “That’s how they were raised. They were raised to be good kids.”
Saturday was one of the few times the boys were allowed to hit the streets of the South Side alone, Fitzpatrick said.
“Our kids were always dropped off and picked up and escorted,” Fitzpatrick said.
“They started saying, ‘Ma, we can do things on our own,'” she said. “We promised them that we would give them a little more freedom. We let her go for a month. I don’t know what to do now.”
Demario and Demacio, both sophomores at Johnson, were inseparable.

Classmates and teachers described the older twin as a supportive colleague in and out of the classroom during a memorial service at the school’s gymnasium, where Demario spent many afternoons cheering for his brother on the basketball court.
They took turns sharing their memories of Demario with the crowd, eliciting laughter and tears.
“He really embodied the motto ‘I am my brother’s keeper,'” said Ketica Guter, a history teacher who works with second graders.
“This goes beyond Demacio,” Guter added, saying that Demario was like that with his friends and the entire Johnson community.
A classmate said Demario was the only person who could make her smile at school and that his death was “eye-opening.”
“That was my favorite boy,” she said.

The twins also had a 3-year-old brother and a 19-year-old brother who studies at Northeastern Illinois University, Fitzpatrick said. Her mother could not be reached on Sunday.
At school, Demario participated in many extracurricular activities including the Marine Corps Junior ROTC program and Choir, Family and Staff. Demacio played on the soccer and basketball teams and Demario was his biggest supporter.
“He was like a shadow for [Demacio],” Greenfield said. “He sat there and watched all the training sessions, he came to every game and waited for his brother.”
Demario was “funny and smiling all the time,” his advisor Rachel Terry said. He came from a family with a “very committed mother”.
Garland Thomas-McDavid, charter school’s founding director, said her students have faced gun violence since the school opened in 2010.
“It sounds crazy to say that, but kids get shot here all the time,” she said. “But we’ve always been lucky that nobody ever died.”

That changed over the summer when Marcel Pearson, a 17-year-old Johnson graduate student, was gunned down two days before he was due to begin orientation at Western Illinois University.
The school has 10 officers, including some off-duty police officers, patrolling nearby roads to make sure students can come and go safely, Thomas-McDavid said.
“Sometimes when you hear walkies it sounds like you’re in a war zone,” she said.
Demario and Demacio have been in the area over the weekend when school officials are not around patrolling the streets.
Frustrated by what she sees as a lack of attention to the dangers her students face, Thomas-McDavid issued a statement late Saturday saying she would not mind “if there were (war) It takes law to put this right.”
“I know I speak for any educator continually grappling with this type of tragedy when I say we are sick and tired of being sick and tired,” she wrote. “The apologies aren’t enough, and after all the fanfare is over someone else has got to put their baby in the ground.”

Thomas-McDavid opened School Sunday so that students and staff can mourn together. When asked if she would allow news cameras to film the gathering, the principal tearfully greeted the cameras.
“You have to see what the kids are going through,” she said. “We just can’t keep covering it up.”

Dozens of students gathered in the school’s gymnasium, where they cried and comforted each other and wrote encouraging letters to Demario’s family.
Keontay Thompson, 19, a senior who plays with Demacio on the soccer and basketball teams, said he usually walks through the viaduct with the twins on his way to practice but was not with them on Saturday when the shooting happened.
He said Johnson students knew the area around the viaduct was dangerous because it was so poorly lit and not well patrolled.
“We must always stick together,” he said as he stood at the scene of the shooting on Sunday as activists walked the street waving signs that read “Stop Gun Violence NOW.”

“It really hurts to know that I wasn’t there to help him,” Thompson said.
