For Kevin Janison, the New Year’s countdown was a time to stop the clock.

The popular KSNV Channel 3 meteorologist’s final forecast was on Thursday, and it was his own. The veteran weatherman told his audience at the end of the day at 5:00 p.m.: TV show that he was leaving the station. His contract with the NBC subsidiary expired on New Year’s Eve.

“This has been an absolutely amazing and amazing trip,” Janison said on the air, with his weather chart in the background. “There’s a good chance this will be the last weather report I’ll ever be involved with. At some point I will formulate exactly what I want to say about why.” He then thanked his supporters.

After taking a few days to decompress, Janison said on Saturday he simply wanted more time to himself and a better balance in his life.

“I’ve said from the start that it’s all about time and the days are getting longer,” Janison said. “The days off, the time off, are golden for me.”

Janison spent 15 years at KSNV from 2007 after working at KLAS Channel 8 for eight years. He and KSNV executives initiated meetings to renew his contract two months ago. Janison said he had no plans to leave the air as he entered final negotiations with KSNV GM Larry Strumwasser and news director Stephanie Wheatley.

This meeting took place just before 5 p.m. on Thursday afternoon. news broadcast. In a dead end, Janison then walked to the set and stunned his viewers.

The broadcast vet was possibly as surprised as anyone at the turn of events.

“I thought the whole time that I would stay. I didn’t even bring boxes to work on Thursday,” Janison said. “I thought we’d come to an agreement. I think what surprised me was that I kept throwing out ideas, and I don’t think they had any ideas.”

Janison said he had no personal animosity towards the executives with whom he negotiated.

“Larry and Stephanie will always be friends,” Janison said. “I told them from the start that nothing was ever controversial.”

In a phone call on Saturday, Strumwasser praised Janison. The executive also said the hunt has already begun to fill in the huge void left by Janison’s departure.

“We tried to keep Kevin, but unfortunately he refused,” said Strumwasser. “I love Kevin and I wish we could have kept him. But he chose to go alone. He did a really good job, he’s a great colleague and friend.”

Strumwasser said the station was looking hard for a replacement. “It’s a high-profile position at the strongest news network out there,” said Strumwasser, who has lived in Las Vegas for four years. “I’m sure we’ll have a lot of really good applicants.” The board said the position would be filled “as soon as I find the right person.”

Janison’s on-the-spot reporting, particularly on the Fremont Street Experience with former Las Vegas Mayor Oscar Goodman and current Mayor Carolyn Goodman, had become a turn-the-calendar tradition. Instead of braving the elements and revelers, he had a quiet dinner with friends on New Year’s Eve and watched the year-end fireworks at his house.

“I’m pleased to report that I wasn’t groped by a drunk man this New Year’s Eve,” said Janison, a well-respected and popular member of the Vegas media community. Grabbing at Janison’s had actually become a kind of New Year’s Eve sport on the FSE promenade.

Janison also frequently reported from Toshiba Square at the T-Mobile Arena prior to Vegas Golden Knights games. But many of the community events he attended took place on weekends and outside of his usual work schedule.

Janison’s departure ends a year in which News 3 was undermined by a nationwide ransomware attack in October, an ongoing crisis that curtailed news gathering and broadcasting capabilities.

The station also lost several key on-air and behind-the-scenes professionals. In March, Sinclair laid off a dozen News 3 employees in a nationwide move to cut costs. Hundreds of Sinclair employees across the country were also laid off.

Channel 3’s morale has reportedly plummeted as a result of the cuts. It was also reported at the time that several senior Sinclair officials had waived millions of dollars in bonuses in 2020. This news did nothing to lift Channel 3’s spirits.

However, Strumwasser emphasized that Janison’s move had “in no way to do with the events in March”. He said repeatedly, “We wanted him to stay.”

Janison took many personal concerns into account when making his decision to step down. He lost a dear friend and colleague, “Chopper” Tom Hawley, earlier this year to a brief battle with pancreatic cancer. He wrote about Hawley in a Facebook post on Saturday that it was “devastating to see someone so healthy lose a battle with cancer so quickly.” Janison said as a result, he and his wife, Terri Janison, reconsidered how they would spend their time. Janison says the couple are “semi-retired and rewired” at the moment.

Janison also plans to dedicate time to his children’s book series, Deputy Dorkface. Since 2007, he has written two tomes about the cartoon watchdog. “It was really a source of joy,” said Janison. “I’ve actually done writer presentations in schools in 14 states. I should be able to take that a little more, have more fun with this project.”

And Janison says he doesn’t disqualify another stint on a Vegas TV station, provided he can also fulfill his personal passions.

“For me, time is gold,” said Janison. “If I croak, they won’t say, ‘He did 15 news shows a day for 50 years.’ I want the memories to be about traveling and everything else I love.”
