Mayor Jim Kenney is doing great. Not only did he get a free trip to Iceland last week on IcelandAir’s new non-stop service to the island country, but he got to do so in the company of his secret girlfriend, Letitia “Letty” Santarelli.
The 58-year-old mayor won’t tell us how long he’s been with Santarelli, who is six years his junior, and spokesmen for the mayor have routinely deflected questions about Kenney’s personal life. But he did confirm their romance began before she landed a $3,000 job as clerk for the Democratic National Convention’s host committee, for which he recommended her; Kenney was the honorary chairman of the committee. For her efforts, Santarelli received $13,357 in November as part of a $1 million bonus distribution to DNC employees and volunteers. The Pennsylvania Auditor General is investigating the DNC’s spending, which was funded in part by taxpayers.
“I recommended Letty to the 2015 hosting committee while they were preparing and before I was in office,” Kenney tells Philly Mag. “It was my understanding that it was still a competitive process for the position, but regardless I would not have any recommendation must.”
According to Kenney, most of his Iceland trip was paid for by Philadelphia International Airport. Kenney says Santarelli, who could not be reached for comment, paid her own way.
Kenney has been separated from his wife Maureen for years. Santarelli is reportedly in divorce proceedings with her estranged husband, prominent attorney Frederick Santarelli, who recently represented controversial union boss John “Johnny Doc” Dougherty in a court case. The Santarellis own a home together in South Philadelphia.
Kenney’s girls made headlines back in 2014 when she abruptly resigned as the girls’ basketball coach at Neumann-Goretti after the league and archdiocese opened an investigation into the school’s awarding of scholarships. She later filed a now-defunct defamation lawsuit against two former high school basketball coaches, accusing them of sending “poison letters” about them and the program to the league and a college coach.
Both Kenney and Santarelli have children who are all grown.

Philadelphia has a new unofficial First Lady.
Mayor Kenney made his romance with Letitia “Letty” Santarelli public when she accompanied him on his first foreign trip as mayor to Iceland last week. The relationship was first reported by Philadelphia Magazine.

Kenney, 58, and Santarelli, 52, have been friends for several years and only started dating about a year ago, according to two sources who know the couple. Kenney and Santarelli are both separated from their spouses.
Kenney and Santarelli flew to Reykjavik last week aboard an Icelandair flight as part of a cultural exchange to mark the first direct flights between the city and Philadelphia. Philadelphia International Airport paid for the mayor’s flight to Iceland, and Reykjavik paid for the mayor’s hotel room. Kenney spokeswoman Lauren Hitt said Santarelli paid her own way.
However, Santarelli stayed in the mayor’s hotel room.
Hitt said there were “no additional costs” due to Santarelli’s hotel stay. “He would have needed a room anyway.”
Past mayors have traveled the city on business with spouses, and Hitt said lodging arrangements have been handled similarly.
Santarelli declined to be interviewed for this article.
Santarelli is Executive Assistant at Bellevue Communications Group. Prior to that, she was Bureau Chief of the Philadelphia 2016 Host Committee for the Democratic National Convention. Kenney recommended her for the post, Hitt confirmed. Santarelli was one of the dozen employees who received part of the controversial $1.2 million in excess bonuses approved by former Gov. Ed Rendell, the host committee chairman. (She received the smallest piece – $20,000.)
Hitt said Kenney “knows he shouldn’t have recommended Santarelli for the job.” As for the bonuses, Hitt said Kenney only found out about the bonuses through Santarelli. She said his previous testimony on the matter stands.

“Going forward, all major Philadelphia events that receive taxpayer-funded grants should have clear, transparent processes for managing excess funds,” Kenney previously said.
Santarelli served as the head coach of the SS. John Neumann and Maria Goretti high school girls’ basketball team between 2012 and 2014. Last year, the team won the Catholic League title and finished its season 29-1, with the only loss being the state championship. Santarelli reportedly resigned from the school amid an archdiocese investigation into allegations that the team had awarded athletic scholarships.
Kenney is a big fan of the Neumann Goretti girls’ basketball team, which won the state championship in 2015 and was the No. 1 nationally. During his brief inaugural speech last year, Kenney choked a little while talking about the team and called out “Squad,” and the girls in attendance sang back.
Santarelli graduated from Immaculata University in 1986, where she played basketball and was selected as an NCAA First Team All-American.
She has lived in South Philadelphia, Kenney’s hometown, for many years.
Iceland was not Santarelli’s first trip as the mayor’s companion. She also took Kenney to Miami in October, where Kenney spoke at CityLab, an annual gathering of mayors to discuss city management. The Bloomberg Foundation paid for the mayor’s hotel and airfare.
“In all instances where Letty travels with the Mayor, including this Miami trip, it is our policy that she pay for her own travel expenses,” Hitt said.
