Marc Silverman Cancer Diagnosis | Waddle and Silvy

Marc Silverman of ESPN 1000′s ‘Waddle and Silvy’ disclosed that Silvreman has cancer on the air. “The response ‘blew me away,” Marc sa.

Ase from being known as an emotional type, Silverman’s recent cancer diagnosis has toughened him. Silverman was surprised that he was unaware of the swollen lymph nodes he discovered in his neck and then groin a few weeks ago and the subsequent doctor visits, blood work, tests and scans that led to the discovery that he was a non -Has Hodgkin’s lymphoma, was in tears.

But a few hours later in bed, reading some texts and tweets he had received, the response reached him like almost nothing since the first few days after learning what he was dealing with.

“My wife was telling me about the ks, and she looked at me and sa, ‘Are you crying?'” Silverman sa over the phone Wednesday. “She was surprised because I haven’t cried (recently). But you read that you matter, that blew my mind.”

As Silverman reminded listeners, he was single and 34 years old when the show began in February 2007. Now he is 48 and married. He and his wife Allie have two children. Mason will be 6 years old at the end of next month. Braxton recently turned 4 years old.

Stage 3 diffuse large B-cell lymphoma, or DLBCL, is not the type of life event that everyone experiences, but everyone knows and loves someone who has been involved with cancer. Now everyone shares the dull ache of knowing another one.

“Just know that you are loved, you are family and you are not alone in this struggle,” Waddle reassured his partner Tuesday as social media began to glow. “I’ve heard from people I haven’t spoken to in years,” Silverman sa. “I’ve heard from competitors across the board. I’m almost speechless.”

Silverman had no ea what athletes meant when they sa they hadn’t been able to read and respond to all the messages that flooded their phones after a championship or other big win.

“Charles Barkley texted me,” Silverman sa. “(Brian) Urlacher texted me last night. Jason Benetti wrote one of the nicest things I’ve ever read about myself in a DM on Twitter. Jeff Garlin called in this morning. Rick Sutcliffe, who I adored when I was 13, called me yesterday – you know he’s had two battles with cancer.”

“I just wanted to share and it’s been therapeutic for me and I feel like I’m in a good place now. If you reached out to me about three weeks ago, that’s when things really started to heat up and it was a lot harder to focus on the day today.

A port is scheduled to be placed in his chest on Fray so doctors can administer chemotherapy. Silverman also intends to participate in an immunotherapy clinical trial.

Silverman begins the treatments – six three-week treatment cycles – on a following Fray. He sa he would be taking time off work that day and “if I’m feeling halfway decent I’ll go back to work” and get back on the air by the following Monday. It helps that he’s broadcasting from home anyway. But you never know how the body will react to the treatment until it starts.

“My doctors explained this to me: Lymphoma is different from a tumor,” Silverman sa. “It’s the lymph nodes. Level 3 means it is above and below the diaphragm. I have it in my neck. I have it in my groin. Some people would only have it in the neck and armpit and that would be stage 1 or 2 depending on stage. But because it’s above and below my diaphragm it’s stage 3.

“The good news is it’s not in my bones. I had a bone marrow biopsy two days ago. The results came back. It’s not in my bone marrow or in any of my organs. Because of how I feel, and because that was the diagnosis I’ve been keeping my fingers crossed for – once you’re here, you can’t hope for a better diagnosis – that feeds my optimism.”

Hey @WaddleandSilvy stay tuned man. You will beat this. — Len Kasper (@LenKasper) April 22, 2020

Silverman, 48, tends to mark his 13 years and two months as the host of an ESPN 1000 sports talk show alongside former bear Tom Waddle in terms of personal life events as much as the changes in Chicago’s sports landscape she covers to have.

Even in a world turned upside down by a health crisis, this had to resonate.

“I’ve heard from people I haven’t spoken to in years,” Silverman said. “I’ve heard from competitors across the board. I’m almost speechless.”

They were people close to him and strangers. Some he might have expected to write. Some were surprises.

Until now, Silverman had no idea what athletes meant when they said they weren’t able to read and reply to all the messages flooding their phones after a championship or other big win.

It was overwhelming – but in a good way.

“I had no idea when I opened the mic at 5 p.m. yesterday what I was going to get,” he said.

“I just wanted to share and it’s been therapeutic for me and I feel like I’m in a good place now. If you reached out to me about three weeks ago, that’s exactly when things really started to heat up with all this and it was a lot harder to focus day by day.

Silverman would ideally start the treatments – six three-week treatment cycles – on a following Friday. He said he would be taking time off work that day and “if I’m feeling halfway decent I’ll go back to work” and get back on the air by the following Monday.

It helps that he’s broadcasting from home anyway. But you never know how the body will react to the treatment until it starts.

“My doctors explained this to me: Lymphoma is different from a tumor,” Silverman said.

There are also family, friends, acquaintances and listeners who have come forward in solidarity.

@WaddleandSilvy Sending all our love from Evanston, mate. This lymphoma doesn’t know the battle it faces when it takes on a man from Chicago!! Silverman’s only request to those who write to him?

“Please,” he said with stoic determination on Tuesday’s show, “don’t say ‘sorry’ — because it’s time to kick that thing’s ass.”
