Marc Zumoff (born November 18, 1955 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania) is an American sports commentator and former play-by-play announcer for the Philadelphia 76ers.

Northeast Philly native Marc Zumoff celebrates 25 years as Sixers announcer
In 1963, Marc Zumoff and his father made the journey from their Somerton home to the old Philadelphia Arena at 46th and Market Streets to see the Sixers take on the Cincinnati Royals.
It was Zumoff’s first Sixers game. In fact, it was one of the first Sixers games — the team had just relocated from Syracuse, New York.
Thirty-one years later, in 1994, Zumoff became the team’s TV play-by-play announcer, and chances are you’ve heard his voice watching a Sixers game with Allen Iverson, Andre Iguodala or Joel Have seen Embiid.
Zumoff recently celebrated his 25th professional anniversary. He’s called in more than 1,880 Sixers games, but maintaining his enthusiasm has never been a problem.
“It’s really quite simple. I’m a fan,” Zumoff said. “Because I’m a fan, I have an emotional connection that goes to my soul. It’s something I’ve always known. I’ve been a fan of the team since they first moved from Syracuse in 1963, and I carry that with me everywhere.”
Zumoff was born in Mayfair and moved to Somerton at the age of 6. He attended Watson Comly Elementary School and graduated from George Washington High School in 1973.
During his time in Washington, Zumoff said he was fascinated by radio disc jockeys, who would talk between songs and over the music until the lyrics began.
“I started doing it myself on my turntable and found I liked it,” said Zumoff, who now lives in Center City. “I was a huge sports fan, so I started turning down the volume of sporting events and announcing games on a tape recorder.”
He joined the PRISM network in 1983 and hosted the Sixers pre-game, halftime, and post-game shows before being promoted to announcer.
In May 1999, the Sixers made the playoffs after an eight-year drought. Zumoff had his first chance to announce a home playoff game, and the team eventually defeated the Orlando Magic in game three of the series, led by Iverson’s 33 points and playoff-record 10 steals.
“It was great. I don’t think anyone sat down in that place from tip to buzzer,” Zumoff recalled. “I always cite that game as one of my favorite moments of my career.”
Iverson called Zumoff “the best commentator in the world, hands down,” in his 2016 Basketball Hall of Fame speech.
Over the years, Zumoff has become known for his creative catchphrases. For example, the Sixers “turn trash to gold” when a player hits an offensive rebound and “lock all windows and doors” when the team plays tight defense in a key situation.
“The source of creativity in artists, I think, is a bit of a mystery,” Zumoff said when asked how he came up with the sayings. “Most of the time the stuff just came out of my head.”
Zumoff said the catchphrases stuck due to positive fan feedback.
He credits his passion for the sport to growing up in Northeast Philadelphia. Zumoff fondly remembered playing wireball, halfball and other street games at Somerton.
“It was a great environment for me to romanticize about what it would be like if I could play sports for a living,” Zumoff said. “Now I can do the next best thing: I announce, and that has been a real privilege for me.” ••
