However, the ship was hijacked, Latifa was returned to Dubai and, apart from a photo op, she has not appeared in public since her apparently failed attempt to escape.
Activists campaigning for her release now fear for their lives. They also say that Latifa’s sister, Shamsa al Maktoum, made a similar escape attempt in 2000 and has not been seen since.
But the women’s whereabouts may no longer be a mystery: A contentious custody battle over custody of one of the world’s wealthiest and most secretive royal dynasties taking place this week could unveil the mystery behind Dubai’s missing princesses, activists say.

The court case
According to press reports, Princess Haya – Latifa’s stepmother and the sixth wife of Dubai ruler Sheikh Mohammed – has applied for a protection order to prevent one of her children from being forced into marriage after fleeing the sheikdom to London earlier this year. Haya also reportedly sought a non-harassment order at a court hearing in July for her two children, who live with her in the UK and cannot be named for legal reasons. Under UK family law, a non-harassment order is designed to prevent abuse of an individual or their children. The circumstances of this application are not yet reportable.

“There was hardly any freedom,” he said.
On September 16, 1999, when Shamsa was 18, Essabri, who was then Fatima, said he received a letter from Shamsa expressing her longing to escape, but he said he did not realize that the situation was so bad.

During a visit to one of the Sheikh’s estates in Britain in 2000, a person posing as Shamsa told British police that she had fled the family and was allegedly recaptured by agents working for the Sheikh, according to The Guardian worked. The individual reportedly claimed he was forcibly returned to Dubai and has not been seen in public since.

Tiina Jauhiainen, a Finnish citizen, says she became close to Latifa after she was asked to teach princess capoeira classes in 2010.
“It was only after a few months that I met her,” Jauhiainen told ABC News. “She is a very private person. She seemed very reserved, shy. But it wasn’t until we started skydiving together in late 2013 that I became really close friends with her. And then she told me about herself and her life.”
Latifa told Jauhiainen that she tried to escape in 2000 but was recaptured and jailed and tortured by Dubai authorities during a 3 1/2 year detention, her friend told ABC News.
“It sounded like totally inhumane treatment. Now when she told me about it, I started crying,” she said.
Latifa herself addressed these claims in a video released after she was recaptured in March 2018, saying she was imprisoned and tortured for three years after the last attempt to escape.
When she was returned home after the first attempt, Latifa became suspicious, quiet and isolated, spending most of her time with animals, Jauhiainen said.
But in 2017, encouraged by their friendship, Jauhiainen says, Latifa approached her friend with an escape plan. The original plan, later deemed too dangerous, called for Latifa to dive to reach an escape boat. The footage, which is said to be of her practicing in an indoor pool at the Palace of Dubai, was shared with ABC News.
Instead, the couple enlisted the help of former French military officer Jaubert and his boat, the Nostromo, and cruised through the Oman desert in late February 2018, Jauhiainen said. The selfie they took while driving, the couple smiling, is the last known picture of the princess not released by the Dubai government.

While sailing the Indian Ocean, they were boarded by military men in Indian uniforms, said Jauhiainen, who was with the voyage. David Haigh, the founder of the Free Latifa campaign, who was in contact with the women during the escape attempt, said he received WhatsApp messages on March 4, 2018.
“Please help,” he says in the last message he read. “Please please, there are men outside, I don’t know what’s going on.”
The pair hid in the bathroom together before being dragged outside, Jauhiainen said.
“[Latifa] kept saying she was seeking political asylum,” she said. “There were machine guns aimed at us from all sides. And at that point we got separated. I was laid on the floor. I found myself next to a pool of blood. So I was scared.”
The women were taken back to the UAE along with Jaubert and three crew members and jailed. But after a few days, to their surprise, both Jauhiainen and Jaubert were released, Jauhiainen said.
A recording released on YouTube in the case of Latifa’s capture, in which she described the conditions she was living in and her reasons for escaping, brought international attention to the case, which is why Jauhiainen and Haigh believe she was released.
