Sirisha Bandla (c. 1988) is an Indian-born American aeronautical engineer.[2] She is the Vice President of Government Affairs and Exploration Operations for Virgin Galactic.[3] She flew on the Virgin Galactic Unity 22 mission, which made her the second Indian-born woman to fly into space, after Rakesh Sharma, Kalpana Chawla, and Sunita Williams, and the fourth Indian woman to ever cross the frontier of space. Sirisha was born into a Telugu-speaking Hindu family in Guntur District, Andhra Pradesh, India.[7][8] After her birth, Sirisha’s family moved to Tenali in Guntur. Until the age of five, Sirisha divided her time between her grandfather’s house in Hyderabad and her grandmother’s house in Tenali. Sirisha later moved to Houston, USA with her parents.
Sirisha received her bachelor’s degree in aeronautical engineering from Purdue University. She then earned her master’s degree in business administration from George Washington University.[12]

Sirisha hoped to become an ISRO astronaut but was medically disqualified due to her eyesight.[11] She previously worked for the Commercial Spaceflight Federation as an aerospace engineer with Matthew Isakowitz.[12] She later co-founded the Matthew Isakowitz Fellowship in his honor.[13]
Sirisha joined Virgin Galactic in 2015 where she serves as Vice President of Government Affairs.[5] On Sunday, July 11, 2021, Sirisha flew on the Virgin Galactic Unity 22 test flight alongside Sir Richard Branson, Dave Mackay, Michael Masucci, Beth Moses and Colin Bennett. The rocket plane flew 85 km (53 miles) above the Earth, [4] whereby the crew qualified as FAA commercial astronauts.[14] During the flight, Sirisha conducted a University of Florida experiment to study how plants respond to changes in gravity.[15] About her flight, Sirisha’s grandfather, Dr. Bandla Ragaiah: “From a young age she had this ambition to explore the sky, the moon and the stars. Sirisha had her eyes on space, and I am not at all surprised that she is ready to make her dream come true.”[9] During her space flight, she reached an altitude of 89.9 km above the earth’s surface. Sirisha, a member of the Unity 22 flight crew piloted by Dave Mackay and Michael Masucci, is classified as a commercial astronaut by the Federal Aviation Authority.
