Rachel Susan Dratch (born February 22, 1966) is an American actress, comedian and author. After graduating from Dartmouth College, she moved to Chicago to study improv theater at The Second City and ImprovOlympic.
Her breakthrough role was on the NBC television show Saturday Night Live (SNL); She was a cast member from 1999 to 2006, playing a variety of roles including Debbie Downer. She has since returned to SNL as an occasional guest, where she portrays Senator Amy Klobuchar. Other TV appearances include The King of Queens, Monk and 30 Rock. She has also played the recurring role of Wanda Jo Oliver on Last Week Tonight with John Oliver. She starred in films such as Click (2006), I Now Pronounce You Chuck and Larry (2007), Sisters (2016) and Wine Country (2019).
In 2022, Dratch made her Broadway stage debut in POTUS: Or, Behind Every Great Dumbass Are Seven Women Trying to Keep Him Alive, for which she received a Tony Award for Best Actress in a Play nomination. In 2012 she published her autobiographical book, Girl Walks Into a Bar…: Comedy Calamities, Dating Disasters, and a Midlife Miracle.

Dratch was born on February 22, 1966 in Lexington, Massachusetts to Elaine Ruth (née Soloway), a transportation director, and Paul Dratch, a radiologist. Both of Dratch’s parents were Reform Jews.[5] Dratch attended Hebrew school and had a bat mitzvah. As an adult, she is not a believer, and instead describes the faith into which she was born as part of her cultural heritage.[2]
Her younger brother Daniel is a television producer and author; His credits include the TV series Anger Management. Dratch says she grew up the “class clown type”[2] and attended William Diamond Middle School and Lexington High School in Lexington. She said while acting in high school plays, she tended to act in comedy more than drama.[6]
Dratch attended the National Theater Institute at the Eugene O’Neill Theater Center in the fall of 1985 and graduated from Dartmouth College in 1988. She studied acting and psychology and was a member of the impromptu comedy group Said and Done. .[2] At Dartmouth, Dratch was a classmate of Kirsten Gillibrand.[8]

Dratch was a mainstage cast member of comedy troupe The Second City for four years. She received the Joseph Jefferson Award for Best Actress in a Revue for the two revues she appeared in: Paradigm Lost and Promisekeepers, Losers Weepers. On The Second City, she appeared alongside future SNL executive writers Adam McKay and Tina Fey, and future 30 Rock performer Scott Adsit. The first incarnation of her SNL skit, Wicked, was performed in The Second City’s Paradigm Lost. In addition to acting, Dratch also played the cello on stage. The theater also hosted the first incarnation of Dratch & Fey (their critically acclaimed two-woman show starring Tina Fey[9]), which was later performed at New York’s Upright Citizens Brigade Theater, where it was called “the funniest.” thing “found on every New York comedy stage” by Time Out New York.[10]
Dratch has appeared in several films including Martin & Orloff, The Hebrew Hammer, Down with Love, Dickie Roberts: Former Child Star, Click, I Now Pronounce You Chuck and Larry, Spring Breakdown and My Life in Ruins. Other television appearances include Monk, Frasier, Wizards of Waverly Place, 30 Rock, Aqua Teen Hunger Force, Inside Amy Schumer, Ugly Betty and more recently The Middle season five. She also appeared online with comedian Billy Eichner in a parody of Jay-Z and Alicia Keys’ Empire State of Mind called Forest Hills State of Mind.[11]

Dratch was originally cast in the role of Jenna Maroney on 30 Rock as “Jenna DeCarlo” and the original pilot episode features her in the role. After feedback from test audiences, the role was eventually recast with Jane Krakowski. She played various small guest roles in several episodes of the first season, including Barbara Walters, Elizabeth Taylor, a cat trainer, a janitor, a blue monster, and a doctor.[12]

On April 15, 2017, she had another guest appearance with host Jimmy Fallon. On February 3, 2018, she guest-starred as the “Patriot of New England” in a Revolutionary War-themed sketch parodying fans of the New England Patriots and Philadelphia Eagles ahead of Super Bowl LII. On September 29, 2018, she appeared as Senator Amy Klobuchar in the cold open sketch surrounding the hearing of Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh.[16] She has reprized the role of Klobuchar during the drafts of the main Democratic Party debates, specifically the fifth and sixth debates in November and December 2019.[17]

Our Lady of Perpetual Exemption was a legal church in the United States founded by comedian and satirist John Oliver.[2] Its purpose was to expose and ridicule televangelists like Robert Tilton and Creflo Dollar who preach the “gospel of prosperity,” viewed as a way to cheat believers out of their money,[3][4] and attention to direct towards tax-exempt status given to churches and charities with little government oversight.[5][6] Oliver announced the planting of his church on March 31, 2015 in a 20-minute segment of his show Last Week Tonight.[3]

Critic Matt Wilstein, writing in Mediaite, saw Oliver’s stunt along the same lines as the lineup of a 501(c)(4) comedian Stephen Colbert – Colbert Super PAC – as a way to “test the Supreme Court’s absurd limits Decision of Citizens United”; In contrast, Oliver’s megachurch is a way to test whether the IRS might consider his “megachurch” a tax-exempt organization.[4] Critic Steve Thorngate, writing in The Christian Century, suggested that the religious tax exemption issue was more difficult and nuanced than Oliver had portrayed, rather than just a matter of government regulation, and described Oliver’s pivot to IRS policy as “not helpful”. However, Thorngate agreed that Oliver’s exposure and criticism of “manipulative villains” who “blind the faithful” is “on point.”[19] Critic Leonardo Blair, writing in The Christian Post, described Oliver’s segment as a “brutal takedown” by televangelists and churches preaching “the prosperity gospel,” a message that misleads people into believing that giving money alleviates medical or financial problems solve while they’re at it. In fact, the donations go to the personal augmentation of televangelists who buy expensive jets or large mansions.[20]
A week after announcing the organization of the church, Oliver devoted a brief segment of his show to the donations the church had received, including funds from around the world. Oliver said he received “thousands of envelopes containing thousands of dollars” from donors. Several US Postal containers filled with mail were on display. Oliver told viewers that the more money they sent in, the more “blessings” they would get back, adding that “that’s still something I’m – amazingly – legally allowed to say.”[21][22]

On September 13, 2015, Our Lady of Perpetual Exemption was closed by Oliver.[23] While Oliver clarified that the church prefers monetary donations, Oliver claimed that supporters sent actual bags of semen and what appeared to be containers of semen. (This was probably in response to the satirical “seed belief” in which donations are referred to as “seeds.”) Rachel Dratch (playing Oliver’s wife) joked in response, “…when someone sends you sperm in the mail, it’s time to stop whatever you do”.[7][8]
After the church’s dissolution, Oliver announced that the tens of thousands of dollars received so far would be donated to Doctors Without Borders, saying sardonically, “If you want to send money to a fake church, send it to Scientology.”[8]
