Lois Nicotra and Richard Nicotra

Owner, The Nicotra Group LLC / officespacestatenisland.com

When Lois and Richard Nicotra were newlyweds, Lois was an elementary school teacher pursuing a master’s degree while Richard started a business, Everything Yogurt.

“When we got married, he ran his first store in Manhattan and asked me to help with the payroll,” said Lois Nicotra, describing the Everything Yogurt store her husband opened on Wall Street in 1976. “We lived in the very smallest of a two-bedroom basement apartment at the time, and I did everything by hand, sitting on the edge of the bed and using the ironing board as a desk.”

After opening a number of company-owned stores, Richard began to franchise the Everything Yogurt concept. Eventually it grew to 250 locations across the country. As the business grew, Lois had a choice: continue her teaching career or join her husband’s business. She chose the latter.

Their first corporate office was in a building they bought in Port Richmond. In 1993, they decided to move to a then-deserted strip of South Avenue. After hosting conventions and sending potential franchisees to hotels in New Jersey because there was no lodging on Staten Island, the couple began researching the complexities of opening a hotel in the county. After years of planning and construction, the Hilton Garden Inn opened in September 2001, four days after the horrific events of 9/11.

Despite the tragedy, the hotel managed to thrive. Today, Nicotras’ Corporate Park includes the 200-room Hilton Garden Inn, 10 Class A office buildings, Nicotra’s Ballroom & Conference Center, Above, Above Rooftop, Lorenzo’s Restaurant Bar & Cabaret, and the 200-room Hampton Inn & Suites.

Corporate Commons Three, currently under construction, will include 330,000 square feet of LEED Silver certified office space and a social enterprise restaurant, Pienza, Brick Oven Pizza Café, which will donate 100 percent of its profits to Staten Island charities, which reflects the philanthropy Model at her COMMONS Café.

Together they own The Nicotra Group, Staten Island’s largest private real estate development company.

WHAT IS YOUR GREATEST BUSINESS STRENGTH?

To put it simply, we’re at our best when we’re together. Each of us brings different talents to the table, but more than that, our talents, our goals, and our vision of what we can achieve are all strengthened because we sit side by side at the table and because of the special love we have share; There’s no greater gift than working with and being married to your best friend.” Lois Nicotra A lot of people ask what it’s like to work side-by-side, seven days a week, for four decades with my wife and us know that this is unique. What I do know for sure is that none of what we built, the Hilton Garden Inn, the Hampton Inn & Suites, the Corporate Park, the Everything Yogurt Company we started in college, our corporate buildings, or the expansions , which we’re investing in now…none of this would have happened without Lois stepping beside me. She is my partner in every definition of that word.

What’s special about Amerosis’ business, he said, is that he runs it with his two sons, Gerald and Peter, which means a lot to him. “I’m really enjoying it. At one point I mentored them, and now they’re mentoring me,” he said. It’s only from here that the family business sees growth. “We always want to improve,” adds the jeweler. This film always caught my eye because this was a person who had a goal to go the distance and this is the story of people in their careers; You choose a destination and then have to work out the timetable. Bobby Pasquale

Owner, Pool Doctor / pooldoctorsi.com

“Anything that has to do with pools and spas, whether above ground, in-ground or semi-in-ground, we take care of it,” noted Pasquale, owner of Tottenville-based Pool Doctor. “Installation, maintenance, repair or renovation. When it comes to a swimming pool or spa, we have it covered.”

Pasquale, whose family has owned a pool shop for generations, wasn’t initially attracted to the business but instead started working in it out of necessity.

“They sold the pools but didn’t install them, so I got involved,” he said. “It’s a seasonal business and it was difficult to find dedicated employees. After working for just a season or two, I saw an opportunity. Staten Island pool owners needed reliable service and maintenance. That’s when I started Pool Doctor.”

The company offers everything from surveying and design to excavation, construction and finishing, and has a team of certified technicians with years of hands-on experience. And since the company has its own excavation equipment, it also offers commercial and private snow removal services in winter.

“There’s a lot of long hours, but I really enjoy this industry,” said Pasquale. “I love working outdoors and love being able to create those special spaces for homeowners.”
