Who is Richard Pryor’s son?

Richard Pryor’s son is Richard Pryor Jr.

Born in 1961, he is one of seven children of the legendary stand-up comedian and actor, who passed away in 2005 at the age of 65.

The 60-year-old actor is best known for his work on The Color Purple (1985) and Silent Bark and Bustin’ Loose (1981).

He is also the author of a 2019 novel, In A Pryor Life, which details his early life and “real-life story of overcoming obstacles, surviving, and thriving.”

What did he accuse Paul Mooney of?

In 2019, Richard Pryor’s ex-bodyguard Rashan Khan alleged that Mooney molested Pryor’s son as a child.

In an interview with Comedy Hype, he also claimed that Pryot once expressed a wish to have Mooney killed in an assassination attempt based on the alleged incident.

It was claimed to have been worth $1 million.

Pryor’s widow, Jennifer Lee Pryor, confirmed the claims.

Pryor Jr. later confirmed that he was raped, but never mentioned Mooney by name.

According to TMZE, he said that “whatever happened to me” happened way back when he was young, suggesting he was abused as a teenager well before the ’80s.

He also confirmed that he was definitely “underage” when asked about Khan’s allegation.

A day after Pryor’s son made the statement, Mooney pulled out of a show he was set to host at the Atlanta Comedy Theater.

No formal allegations were ever made against the comedian before he died on May 19, 2021 at the age of 79 after suffering a sudden heart attack.

Mooney had always denied the claims.

Paul Mooney Shuts Down Rumors He Had Sex With Richard Pryor’s Son

Richard Pryor’s former bodyguard Rashon Khan sat down for an interview with Comedy Hype on Monday (August 26) and made some shocking allegations.

According to Khan, the late legendary comedian once put a $1 million bounty on Paul Mooney’s head for allegedly having sex with Pryor’s son.

“Their relationship became fragile because at that point Paul Mooney was fucking Richard’s son,” he said. “He violated. Paul took advantage of the situation. There was a time when Paul Mooney was Richard’s boyfriend. So when Paul did what he did, it was first a violation of friendship, then “my son.” And in some circles they would care.”

But in a statement to TMZ, Mooney’s publicist dismissed Khan’s claim: “Rashon Kahn’s testimony has no validity as it pertains to Mr. Paul Mooney.”

Jennifer Lee Pryor, Pryor’s widow, disagrees. She says she has a confession on tape.

“TRUE-RP jr. confirmed this at the lunch I gave after Richard’s memorial service,” she wrote on Twitter. “He announced it to the whole restaurant full of guests! I have it on tape.”

Khan is currently doing press rounds for his forthcoming book, Everything Wasn’t Funny.

He told the story to illustrate why Pryor and Mooney’s professional relationship and friendship ended. Mooney previously co-wrote material for Pryor and was head writer for The Richard Pryor Show.

Paul Gladney (August 4, 1941 – May 19, 2021), better known by the stage name Paul Mooney, was an American comedian, writer, social critic, and actor.[1] He is best known for his collaborations with Redd Foxx, Eddie Murphy and Dave Chappelle, his writing for comedian Richard Pryor and the television series Sanford and Son, In Living Color and Chappelle’s Show, and his role as singer Sam Cooke on The Buddy Holly Story (1978), Junebug in Spike Lee’s satirical film Bamboozled (2000) and Negrodamus in Chappelle’s Show.[2][3]

Early life[edit]

Mooney was born in Shreveport, Louisiana in 1941 and moved to Oakland, California seven years later.[4] His parents were George Gladney and LaVoya Ealy.[5] Mooney was raised primarily by his grandmother, Aimay Ealy, known to the family as “Mama”.[6] Gladney coined the nickname “Mooney” after original Scarface actor (1932), Paul Muni (who was himself the actor’s stage name).[7]

Career [edit]

Mooney became ringmaster at Gatti-Charles Circus. While he was a ringmaster, he kept writing comedy and telling jokes, which later helped Mooney land his first professional writing job for Richard Pryor.

Mooney wrote some of Pryor’s routines for his Saturday Night Live appearance, co-wrote his material for the albums Live on the Sunset Strip, Bicentennial Nigger and Is It Something I Said, and Pryor’s film Jo Jo Dancer, Your Life Is Calling. As head writer for The Richard Pryor Show, he helped many young comics such as Robin Williams, Sandra Bernhard, Marsha Warfield, John Witherspoon and Tim Reid get into show business for the first time.

Mooney has also written for Redd Foxx’s Sanford and Son and Good Times, starred in several cult classics, including the Richard Pryor comedies Which Way Is Up?, Bustin’ Loose, and the cult satirical comedy Hollywood Shuffle, and portrayed singer/songwriter Sam Cooke in The Buddy Holly Story.

He was the first-year lead writer on Fox’s In Living Color and inspired the character Homey D. Clown, played by Damon Wayans. Mooney later played Wayans’ father in Spike Lee’s film Bamboozled as comedian Junebug.

Mooney first appeared in the sketches “Ask a Black Dude” and “Mooney at the Movies” on Comedy Central’s Chappelle’s Show. He later appeared as Negrodamus, an African-American version of Nostradamus. As Negrodamus, Mooney has the “answers to life’s most unsolvable mysteries” like “Why do white people love Wayne Brady?” (Answer: “Because Wayne Brady Bryant makes Gumbel look like Malcolm X.”) Mooney planned to reprise his role as Negrodamus in Season 3 of The Chappelle’s Show before Dave Chappelle left the show due to stress.

In 2006, Mooney hosted the BET Black History Month tribute entitled 25 Most @#%! moments in black history. On that show, he recounted some of the most shameful incidents involving African Americans since the 1980s. The top 25 moments included incidents involving Marion Barry, Terrell Owens, Wilson Goode, Michael Jackson, Flavor Flav, Whitney Houston and Tupac Shakur.

In 2007, Mooney published his first book, the memoir Black Is the New White.[1]

In November 2014, Paul’s brother announced that Mooney had prostate cancer.[8] Mooney continued to tour and perform his stand-up comedy act.

controversy[edit]

Much of Mooney’s material was based on the issue of racism in the United States.[9]

BET Comedy Awards

In September 2005, at the 2005 BET Comedy Awards, Mooney performed a segment titled “Nigga Wake Up Call Award”, in which he jokingly presents an award to African-American celebrities who neglected their blackness to try to blend in with Caucasians only to find you’re still a “nigga” in their eyes. “Nominees” included Michael Jackson, Oprah Winfrey, Lil’ Kim and Diana Ross. Mooney complimented Ross and made numerous jokes about Ross’ arrest in 2002 for drunk driving.[10] According to those present, Mooney also made light of the death of Ross’ ex-husband Arne Næss Jr., who fell while mountaineering in 2004.[11] Tracee Ellis Ross, daughter of Ross and step-daughter of Næss, was also present. She was reportedly so offended and embarrassed that she left the room.[12] Backstage in the press room, Mooney was asked if he felt his performance was “over the top”. Mooney replied:

How can someone get arrested for being under the influence and go to jail and I’m over the top? I think that’s an exaggeration, right? Agree or disagree folks. No, comedy is not over the top. If you’re a celebrity and you do crazy things, that’s the game.

When informed that Tracee Ellis Ross was in the audience, Mooney stated:

I didn’t know… her mom might have been in there, that’s not the point. I didn’t drive drunk. Now I’m in charge of Diana Ross? If you’re scrutinizing Jay Leno and David Letterman the same way you’re scrutinizing me, then I agree with you, but if you don’t touch them, the whites don’t touch me. They say what they want every night.[12]

Most of Mooney’s performance was cut from the television show and not aired.

“The N-Word”

On November 26, 2006, Mooney appeared on CNN and talked about how he would stop using the word “nigga” due to Michael Richards’ outbursts on stage at the Laugh Factory.[13] He referred to Richards as “his Dr. Phil” and “cured” him from using the epithet. Mooney also said, “We’re going to stop using the n-word. I will stop using it. I won’t use it again and I won’t use the b-word. And we’re going to put an end to the n-word. Just say no to the n-word. We want everyone around the world to stop using the n-word.”

On November 30, Mooney elaborated on these remarks from his appearance on CNN as a guest of Farai Chideya on National Public Radio’s News & Notes program.[14] He stated that he will be convening a conference on this controversial topic in the near future and will be performing his first n-free comedy in the coming days.[14]

This show, which he performed at the Lincoln Theater after a set by Dick Gregory, took place on December 2, 2006. Mooney almost made it through his entire set — about an hour of jokes — before he used the word incorrectly in a routine on O.J. Simpson. He ran off the stage, covered his face with his hands, and a few moments later walked back and said, “I’m really going to get it now. It’s probably already on the internet.” On the BET special 25 Events that Mis-Shaped Black America, Mooney reiterated that he no longer uses the word. He was quoted as saying, “I’m not going to use the n-word anymore. Instead of saying, ‘What’s up, my nigga,’ say, ‘What’s up, my Michael Richards’.” At a summit meeting with Jesse Jackson, Reverend Al Sharpton, and Richards, Mooney forgave Richards.[15]

Personal life[edit]

In an August 2019 interview with Comedy Hype, Richard Pryor’s ex-bodyguard, Rashon Khan, alleged that Mooney molested Pryor’s son, Richard Pryor Jr., when Pryor Jr. was a child. Khan also claimed that because of this incident, Pryor had expressed a desire to have Mooney killed in an assassination attempt and was only prevented from doing so by his 1980 fire incident. Richard Pryor Jr. has confirmed that he was raped but did not identify Mooney as his alleged rapist.[17][18][19]

death [edit]

On May 19, 2021, Mooney died of a heart attack at his home in Oakland, California, at the age of 79.
