edit plot ]

Izzy (Isabella) is a hairdresser. One day, the microwave in her salon catches fire. The salon landlord’s assistant, Doug, asks for payment of the damage, so she gives the money she saved for the world trip.

The Prince of Lavania, Prince Thomas, asks his assistant Walter to arrange a haircut. Walter mistakenly calls Izzy’s salon and tells her that she’ll be paid $500 for the haircut. Izzy agrees. When she meets the prince and starts cutting his hair, a housekeeper comes with tea and accidentally drops him. Upset at how poorly the housekeeper is being treated, Izzy leaves without finishing the prince’s haircut. She returns to the salon where Thomas comes in to finish the haircut. Afterwards, Izzy agrees to take the prince back to the subway and the two have a fun night.

The next day, Thomas, his fiancée Lauren and her mother discuss who to hire as makeup artist for the wedding. Prince Thomas’ assistant recommends Izzy’s salon. Her salon agrees and they travel to Lavania. Another assistant, Madam Fabre, tests her makeup skills. Izzy passes but her peers don’t, so Madam Fabre trains her. Izzy visits the province and Thomas accompanies her.

The next day, Thomas explains to his family that he wants to do more for the locals. Izzy encourages locals to donate to the less fortunate children by leaving items at the castle gate. Lauren tells Thomas that she would like part of her new estate to be dedicated to her work studio. Thomas finds the sentry box full of donated toys for the kids. Izzy and Thomas drive the toys and some royal furniture to the orphanage.

Lauren’s mother sees Thomas and Izzy getting too close. Lauren isn’t concerned, commenting that she would rather focus on her business ideas than marry someone she barely knows. When a photo of them ends up in the newspapers, Izzy is asked to leave. It is revealed that the reason the King and Queen want Thomas Lauren to marry is so that her family could help them get out of debt.

On the wedding day, Walter tells Thomas that he knows Thomas is in love with Izzy. Thomas tells Lauren he can’t marry her. She’s relieved because she doesn’t want to get married either. Izzy returns to find that a large fire has broken out in the drawing room. When Doug comes to visit and asks for money, she tells him that she spoke to the owner, who was expecting Doug to rewire the property last year. The family plans to renovate the salon, but Izzy tells them that she no longer wants to work at the salon, choosing to become the director of a local community center.

Prince Thomas rides to Izzy’s house and confesses his feelings to her. The film ends with them going out for ice cream on horseback.

Cast[edit]

production [edit]

Filming began in February 2021 in both Dunedin and Oamaru, New Zealand. The film production involved 30 actors, 100 extras and a sizeable film crew.[3] Notable filming locations included Vogel Street (representing New York City), the Fable Dunedin Hotel, Larnach Castle and the Olveston Historic Home (the latter two representing the royal residence of Lavania), the Otago Peninsula and the University of Otago Register Building and the Victorian Quarter of Oamaru.[4]

The film was released on Netflix on January 20, 2022. It reached #1 on Netflix the week of its release.[6][7]

Reception [edit]

On review aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes, 27% of the 15 critic reviews are positive, with an average rating of 4.2/10.[8] Metacritic, which uses a weighted average, assigned the film a score of 36 out of 100 based on 5 critics, indicating “generally unfavorable reviews”.

Variety’s Courtney Howard gave the film a positive review, writing that it “takes expected genre trappings and infuses them with unexpected joys, resulting in an enlightened, enchanting, and entertaining film.”[10]

Lindsey Bahr of the Associated Press gave the film a star-and-a-half out of four, writing, “Like a drugstore candy bar, it’s just you get a mild sugar high (and possibly a headache) and fade from your memory just as quickly…”[11]

Stuff’s James Croot described the film as “a flimsy, unforgettable rom-com farce”. He also criticized Holly Hester’s screenplay, comparing it to early treatment rather than a “fully formed” screenplay. Croot described Marano’s character Izzy as one-dimensional and noted the non-royal Lavan characters’ New Zealand accents.

‘The Perfect Date’ star Laura Marano on ‘The Royal Treatment’ and embracing Netflix’s multiverse of rom-coms

Listen 10 min Comment on this story Comment Gifts Share

Laura Marano is the first to admit her new movie ‘The Royal Treatment’ isn’t entirely original. In the Netflix film – which she co-produced with her sister, actress Vanessa Marano, and her mother, Ellen Marano – Austin & Ally alumna plays Izzy, an outspoken hairstylist hired to look after the prince of the fictional Lavania (“Aladdin”) star Mena Massoud) got a much-needed haircut after his royal butler accidentally called the wrong salon.

It’s not hard to guess what happens to Izzy and her handsome prince, who is engaged to each other at the beginning of the film. But that doesn’t make it any less fun to watch. “We’ve seen normal girls falling in love with a prince of a fictional country before. And it’s something I love,” Marano said in a recent Zoom interview with The Washington Post. “It’s a subgenre that I think is one of my favorites, to be honest.”

And it’s a subgenre that the 26-year-old Los Angeles native was thoroughly digging into when Netflix, home of a growing list of royal-themed romantic comedies, acquired the film in 2019. Look closely, and you’ll find callbacks to at least one other fictional Netflix kingdoms and references to other rom-coms on the streamer.

“I’m honored to be a part of Netflix’s universe of rom-coms. I feel like, ‘Move, Marvel,'” Marano said with a laugh. “I’m saying this half-jokingly and kinda seriously: I think the fact that we have Lavania in this film was a big reason why Netflix wanted to do it, because I think they’re kind of like, ‘Oh, more made-up countries!’”

The film also features two songs by Marano, who says her fans can look forward to more music – and a tour, dates of which will be announced later this year.

Q: As a producer and as an actor, what drew you to this project?

A: I loved the character. i love izzy The most important thing I always look for when it comes to projects and choosing projects is character. Can I connect with them? Have I played this character before? Then, of course, I look at the project myself.

advertisement

In 2019 I had made The Perfect Date, which was sort of like PG-13 teen rom-com. I directed Saving Zoe, a film I produced with my mother and sister, which was an R-rated indie about grief and online sexual exploitation. And then I did A Cinderella Story: Christmas Wish, which was a family movie that was super adorable and Christmassy. So I was like, “What project do I want to do next?” And I loved Izzy. She was so headstrong and such a character I really don’t think I’ve played before and ironically someone I really identify with and connect with very much.

I really put a lot of myself and a lot of things I love into the story, be it my Italian New York family – I have a few family members in the Bronx that I really hope don’t like my New York accent judge too hard – or . . . that feeling of believing in yourself that you can make a difference in this world and in your community. It doesn’t matter if you’re the prince of a fictional country or a New York barber. Everyone has the ability to make change in their community in the world and I love that part of the script and story.

Q: The Royal Treatment has had to navigate the pandemic, which continues to be a difficult time for so many people. Does it feel like kismet that the film, which is delightful and very upbeat, is coming out now?

advertisement

A: 100% Kismet timing. I can only speak for myself, but this new twist freaked me out a lot and definitely increased my anxiety, sadness, frustration – all those feelings. And so I can’t help but be thankful that this film is coming out when it does, because it feels like a time for some much-needed joy and escapism.

We sold it to Netflix at the end of 2019. Originally we wanted to shoot it in Europe. . . and because of the pandemic we were delayed. That led us to the decision to shoot it in New Zealand, where Covid was practically nil at the time. It was primarily a logistical decision, but it turned out to be one of the best creative decisions we made for several reasons, one of which was the look of the film.

The scenery and landscape of New Zealand is so amazing and so not what you normally see. We have such an amazing diverse cast of actors that I love and by the way how amazing are these actors? Praise New Zealand and its talented actors.

advertisement

Q: The Royal Treatment seems very progressive for a rom-com, even if it’s one we’ve seen before. Not just because of the diversity you mentioned, but there’s kind of a gentrification story. How important was that for this project and in general how important is that for you for the projects you work on?

A: Very, very important. That was one of the reasons I fell in love with the script and fell in love with the story. This film is a film that I think people can see and totally withdraw into and I think it really touches on issues that I’m really excited about and that are really important in the time that we’re living in now .

For this film, one could not exist without the other. I really wanted both aspects of this film: easy to watch, to be lighthearted, to be that story and rom-com that we loved and to have themes that deal with economic systems and with the ability to make change happen in your community effect, and even – on a personal level – identity in oneself and identity in the family.

advertisement

Q: This is the second film you have produced with Calabrian Rhode, the production company you share with your mother and sister. What is it like working with them?

A: Working with my mother and sister is special. It’s really hard. It’s complicated, isn’t it? Discuss a topic I am referring to: finding identity within yourself or within family. But I have the feeling that we are such a great team because we just get along. We’re very much in agreement when it comes to [creativity] and they’re two of my favorite people in the world – her and my dad, who’s not involved in the entertainment industry at all, which is amazing. He is an Italian teacher.

Sometimes I feel like I’m the little sister/baby/youngest of the family. And it’s kind of interesting to me because in other aspects of my career, just being myself, I’m very different. I think that’s something we’ve been working on so actively, and we have a really honest, transparent relationship, which I think is a necessity when it comes to both work and the relationship: those two different aspects of our relationship and our dynamic.

advertisement

When it comes to my role production I’m a control freak and so are my sister and my mother by the way. It can be a bit difficult at times because we all have to give and take. But we’re all pretty heavily involved in all aspects of the production, be it the script workshop, casting, you know, pre-production, looking at locations, looking at the wardrobe, looking at the budget, problem solving.

Q: You are also a singer-songwriter and have two songs – “Dance With You” with Gray and “Worst Kind of Hurt” with Wrabel – in the film. Can you talk a little bit about why they are special to you?

A: “Dance With You” appears in the last scene and in our end title animation sequence, which I think is super cute. . . . I know when it comes to the editing process it’s easy to fall in love with a lot of different possibilities, but most importantly with the music that’s being chosen, I really wanted to make sure everyone knew I wanted to do the song. But being a producer, I tried to approach it from a point of view: “It’s a collaboration and I want to make sure everyone is interested in it.” It was always with the caveat of if it’s good and it works for the film .

advertisement

“Worst Kind of Hurt”, which – without giving too much away – takes place in a very important scene of the film, happened very differently because I wrote this song without even thinking about the film. The director asked me if I had a song that would work for this scene because originally it was just a score, which was beautiful.

Q: “Dance With You” is a sample of Whitney Houston’s “I Wanna Dance With Somebody (Who Loves Me)”. How did this happen? And is there pressure to use a sample from such a popular and well-known song?

A: Someone on my music team happens to work with the original writers of Whitney Houston’s I Wanna Dance With Somebody – the amazing Shannon Rubicam and George Merrill – who were also behind [the band] Boy Meets Girl. I’m still overwhelmed that I got the chance to work with them.

There’s pressure, once you’ve decided to use [the pattern], to use it well and do a good job with it. I definitely felt that using that 100 percent would add value to the song. And on top of that, we have this really funny dance moment in the movie. I was really inspired by that scene and that joy that I think that scene embodies. It felt like it came together quite organically.

advertisement

But the pressure was definitely there. As I wrote it, I thought, “Oh my god, do a good job, do a good job.” I had tons of ideas; I had all these voice memos. I remember actually driving to my sister’s house when I found out what we ended up using. . . . When I actually met Shannon and George after I wrote it and they loved the song so much, I thought, [sings] “This is the best moment of my life.”
