Edna Pierre-Jacques, 78, was a beloved pillar and matriarch of East Flatbush, Brooklyn, where she was also known for sharing her Haitian heritage and culture.

This included “the widely misunderstood religion of voodoo,” former NYPD police chief Robert K. Boyce told “New York Homicide,” which airs Saturdays at 9/8c on Oxygen. “Voodoo powers were implicated in her shocking death.”

On February 27, 2016, around 9:50 p.m., Pierre-Jacques’ body was discovered in her home. from her granddaughter, Brianna Jean Baptiste, who stopped by to pick up a gift. She alerted her mother, who was outside in her car, and they called 911.

First responders at the scene suspected the elderly woman’s death was no accident. There were no signs of forced entry. According to investigators working on the case, she was lying in a pool of blood.

It was a shocking and tragic turn of events for a woman who arrived in New York in 1968 and made a living for herself and her family. She raised four children and worked as a seamstress. She loved to cook, dance and make people laugh. She was “the glue” that held the family together, her loved ones told producers.

Edna Pierre-Jacques

“She appeared to have some injuries to her head,” said Det. Gilberto Alonso, NYPD, Brooklyn South Homicide Squad, adding that near the body was a bloodied hammer and electrical cords. “We also noticed ligature marks around her neck, as if she had been strangled.”

Following standard procedure, investigators began interviewing the victim’s family members, including her husband Frederick, 76. He was at home at the time of the murder and had a strained relationship with his wife, DNA Info reported.

Detectives quickly found that Edna and Frederick shared the same house but essentially had separate lives — and rooms. When questioned by detectives, he claimed he saw or heard nothing, despite being in the next room at the likely time of her murder.

“We thought that was kind of weird,” said Nelson Figueroa, retired detective, NYPD, 67th Precinct, Brooklyn. When they searched his room, they found a book, open to one page, which read, “How to Get Rid of a Witch.”

Instructions include writing someone’s name on paper and burning it. A piece of burned paper with Edna’s name on it in Frederick’s room raised a red flag, investigators said.

After a deeper dive, detectives found Edna had a reputation for practicing voodoo, they said. “I think Frederick was upset that his wife was a voodoo spiritual leader… and he wanted to stop her from doing spells,” Figueroa said.

After rounds of questioning and forensic analysis showing that Frederick had not been handling the hammer found nearby, detectives eventually cleared him as a person of interest.

Her investigation took a different turn when an underground playroom with fax machines, cell phones, cash registers and calculators was discovered in the basement of Pierre-Jacques’ house.

“It was a full-fledged gambling venue,” detectives said. And that raised possible murder scenarios and motives. In the 67th Precinct, Frederick explained that he and his wife rented out the basement space to raise extra money.

Despite the promising lead, investigators found nothing from the gambling den leading up to what happened to Edna, detectives said.

After locating and questioning the woman who managed the downstairs space, police learned that nobody was in the basement the night Edna was killed. The gambling den was not running that evening. Investigators were convinced it played no part in the murder.

The police were back to square one. They redoubled their efforts to interview family members in hopes of finding a new lead. The case took an abrupt turn when one told police about Edna’s longtime neighborhood friend Tamisha Harper, then 45.

“Tamisha was at my grandmother’s house almost every day,” said Tatiana Jean Baptiste, her granddaughter. “She was there all the time.”

Investigators immediately attempted to interview Harper. But soon after news of Edna’s death spread around the neighborhood, Harper started acting strange.

The victim’s family members attributed Harper’s behavior to shock. They told the police that they saw her with her boyfriend in a car in front of Edna’s house, but she didn’t answer when Edna’s daughter knocked on the window and asked if she had any information for the police. The two just sped away.

Two days after the murder, she was still missing. She didn’t show up for work. She didn’t answer calls. The police looked at her escape act from all angles. Was she afraid? Had she been kidnapped against her will?

“We thought Tamisha fled because maybe she saw something she wasn’t supposed to see and now she fears for her life,” investigators said.

After an exhaustive search of Harper’s previous addresses, investigators located her at her mother’s home in New Jersey.

Investigators found Harper in the living room “almost in a fetal position,” Figueroa said. “It looked like she hadn’t slept in days. She had this blank look in her eyes.”

They identified each other and “she started rocking back and forth.” They asked her to guide them through what happened the night Edna was killed.

Your account started two weeks before that. She told investigators that a woman from the neighborhood was concerned that her boyfriend might be interested in her. “The woman was a devout voodoo practitioner.”

Harper told police that the woman cursed her and she went to Edna, a spiritual healer, to remove the curse. Edna agreed to help her. But the encounter did not go as planned.

Harper told cops that Edna looked at her and said, “You’re here to kill me,” investigators told producers. At this point, Harper claimed, ghosts took over.

She choked her friend with her hands and the cords. “She describes reaching for the hammer, but never hitting Edna with it,” Alonso said.

She then went home, showered and confessed to her boyfriend, who she claimed took her to her mother’s house. Harper was arrested for murder. No charges were brought against her boyfriend.

The Kings County prosecutor allowed Harper to plead manslaughter. “There was never a trial for Tamisha,” Alonso said. She was sentenced to 17 years in prison.
